View Full Version : Can't access webb site

 Need help in trying to figure out why my computer will not let me access a certain webb site. I figure it is blocked out somehow, but in my very limited computer ability I can not figure how to change any settings.
I know it is my computer because I have gone to several friends houses and am able to log on using their computers. Matter of fact, I sent an email with a link to the site to my own computer thinking that might do something. But I can not access it thru that way either.. I have tried many times an the same thing happens.
When I try to go into the site, it switches to a white blank screen and does nothing. The funny thing is, the first 9 or 10 times I went to that site, I was able to access it. As far as I know, I did not change anything. I have Norton anti virus protection and I have no clue what else I may have. If someone has any suggestions, remember you are not dealing with a rocket scientist here, so make it as simple as you can.
The site I am trying to get to is http://www.sbfantasyportfolio.com
Thanks

Here it is. I have spent a lot of time the past week trying to figure out what to do and have probably screwed things up pretty good. One thing I noticed in reading the different posts and the responses is, Norton security may not be what i should be using and that is what I have. I will have to address that also. But one thing at a time. Thanks for the response and help.

Your computer looks really good, very clean. Congratulations.

I would close internet Explorer and all other open programs. I would go into the Control Panel, choose Internet Options, delete all Temporary Internet files, then click the Security tab, then click the Restricted Sites icon, then click the Sites button and make sure http://www.sbfantasyportfolio.com is not in the list of sites. I would click on the Privacy tab and click the "Default" button. I would click the Content tab and make sure the "Settings" button is not available (if it is, you want to disable the content advisor).

Afterwards, Open Internet Explorer and see if it still won't let you access the site. If it doesn't, Try disabling Norton entirely, I think it would be the next logical cause of the problem.

I followed what you said and got as far as the Content tab. Under it, the settings button is available but I don't see how to disable it.
And thanks for letting me know the system is clean. As much as I have been going into areas I know absolutely nothing about, I surprised I can turn the thing on.

Shut off the Norton security for a minute and tried to access that site and it let me in. Enabled norton again and tried the site and it would not let me in again. It's the Norton Security that is doing it. And from what I have read it is the reason why my computer goes slower. I am puzzeled why I was able to get in the first 3 days or so and then it started blocking me.
I am going to have to go back and read previous post from you guys to see which security's I can download for protection and eliminate the Norton stuff.
.
Shifty, thanks for looking at my stuff and assisting. If there is anything you might be able to point out that I should load or delete from what you see, please let me know.
.
Don't know if there is ever anything I can help you with in the future but if there is, I will try.
Thanks.

I have no other suggestions - your computer is very clean and looks very streamlined.

Here is the security/protection post - please read in full before attempting anything: http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/showthread.php?t=195287

Pay special note to steps to take when removing antivirus and adding a new antivirus program.

If you need any help or have questions, let me know!

Hey Shifty, I hope I am not abusing your helpfulness, but I have another problem I can't figure out and while you can see what's on my computer, you might tell me what to do.
About six months ago I got 4 good working printers from a business that closed. I was told to get on the internet and I could download drivers to make them work. I have not been able to find anything.
They are ADP Laserstation 1700's Rev. level 2,. They are 1998 models. On the back it says they were made by Brother industries, LTD and there is a TMT-17 ID.
I contacted Brother Ind. and they said they were made by them for some one else and they could not provide Tech help.
They were on a network I think. I saw a couple of them work at the business and they are a heck of a lot faster printing then the old deskjet I have now.
If you could help with this issue i would sure appreciate it.
Thanks again.

Dunno what to tell you. Basically you'd need to get the software install disc from the place you picked up the printers. I tried to find some drivers online and didn't have much luck at all in a quick search.

Hi Shifty.
If you could check this out for me I would know I didn't screw up anything in switching things.
I am having some difficulties getting to some stuff. Can't get into my AOL mail. Can't bring up some videos. Did I delete (cookies)?
I deleted the Norton Security and added AVG7, Kerio Firewall, and SpySweeper.
Seems like I am connecting way slower then before (my imagination??)
Before I did this I added, to my favorites, WWW.speakeasy.net for a speed test. Before I changed things it showed 8136kbps download and 349 kbps upload. Now I get 5928 download and 349 upload.
I realize that time of day, # of users, etc affect speed, but I still wonder if I did something I should not have done.
Thanks once again..

i really don't see anything wrong. i know Speakeasy is usually pretty good about their speeds, so you got me there...

just for S&G, have you tried to disable the Kerio Firewall completely just to test again? also, were you doing anything like checking mail, doing any scans, listening to internet readio, etc. while you did the speed test? (i gotta ask).

also, with the firewall disabled, see if AOL mail is available again.

I disabled the Kerio Firewall and was able to access the AOL stuff. I enabled the firewall again and was able to get in to the AOL mail. Maybe there was something up with AOL since last night.
As for speed, I didn't have anything running and I just did another check and got 5828 Download and 352 upload. The download seems consistant but the upload dirrerence..... Is that cause of number of users at different times?
By the way, I think it is very good of you (and the others also) who willingly assist those of us who don't know what we are doing on these computers.
I hope someday that some of us that you have helped can return the favor and do something for you.
.
.
Just tried speed test with firewall disabled 8285 download 338 upload.
enabled firewall again. 5828 download 352 upload.

that's strange to see that kind of overhead from a firewall. let me get back to you after lunch.

ok, so what i'm going to suggest is this: I normally suggest Kerio because of the additional popup blockers and other features, but maybe that's a little too locked down for most people to get "comfy" with.

you want to give ZoneAlarm a shot instead? be sure to remove Kerio completely AND reboot the computer before installing ZoneAlarm.

I too noticed a dramatic slowdown after installing Kerio. Went back to windows firewall.

ill stand beside shifty on the zone alram thing.. i went with the windows firewall and just didnt like it for my needs. so it is disabled again and back to zone alarm.
win firewall is great for many, it just wasn't what i was use to i guess.. ZA is so easy to customize to your needs, whereas windows tried to tell me what i could n couldnt access at times

Oh don't get me wrong, I'm certainly not badmouthing shifty's recommendations, I should have clarified.

I guess its just that some systems or ISP's handle Kerio differently.

I used Zonealarm years ago but stopped because it screwed up a certain program that I used at the time. I don't use that program now and will likely give Zonealarm another try.

shifty, thanks for all you and others here do to help those of us who are less knowledgable about these things.

P.S. Just as a benchmark I'm going to record my scores from Speakeasy here.

After messing things up a couple of times, and playing with something I don't much know or understand, I just could not get The speed I had before so I took out everything i just put in and reinstalled Norton.
My speed on download when last checked using Norton was 8678 download compared to the 5919 download I got right before I removed Kerio.
I would imagine much depends on the speed of the system in the computer.
Just like some one would have a stock 350 chevy engine and someone else has a built 454.
I have been very frustrated this past week messing with this darn thing. It's really tough when you don't know what your doing and don't know if you have the equivalent of the 350 or 454....
I am glad, at least, that Shifty let me know my system is clean and no virus's.
With an engine, I know I can put a cam and carb, etc, to make it go faster, but with this puter, i feel like i am the car in the tv commercial dragging that big boat anchor. .

well - i'll say this - firewall is not a crucial thing if you're running Windows XP and you use the stock built in firewall. however, i still highly recommend using at minimum SpywareBlaster and SpyGuard....and i still hate Norton products, even though I use them religiously at my office.
