Well, you have one piece of spyware - you'll see it listed in the log as "O4 - Startup: PowerReg SchedulerV2.exe" - this would not cause a freeze, though.

some questions:
when the system freezes, if you press the CAPS LOCK key, does the light on the keyboard light up, or not?

how long have you had the system -and- have you ever dusted the internals of the case using pressurized air?

is there any pattern to the lockups? that is to say, if a lockup happens, after rebooting, does it happen more frequently (like, within a few minutes after reboot) and in much less time than the first one?

When it freezes up and you press the caps lock key the light does not light up. My computer is about 6 or 7 years old. I have never cleaned the inside. I have not noticed any patterns.

ok. you are dealing with a hardware-based lockup. that means when the computer freezes, the hardware enters a state in which it is effectively DOA and can't do anything whatsoever (unrecoverable state).

common causes of this:

- dust buildup inside causing overheat : very common if you're a smoker, have hardwood floors, pets, don't dust much or leave the windows open a lot or live in the desert. solution: get a can of compressed air and blast out all of the cards and heatsinks inside the caseto remove the dust. be careful you do not discharge any static electricity on the system components (touch the metal case before touching anything inside).

- faulty equipment causing overheat : one or more fans is/are broken and either the CPU, chipset, video card is overheating or a case fan is dead and the system is overheating. solution: with side of the case off, power up the computer and ensure all fans are properly spinning inside the case where possible.

- faulty hardware connection : one of the cards or components has, over time, degraded in the electrical connection. solution: remove each card and reinstall it one by one to force the metal to re-bridge on the card contacts. this includes: video card, network card, sound card, modem, any sticks of RAM you may have, and check all internal data and power cables for hard drives and floppies...like, remove an end and reinsert, then repeat one by one with the others so you don't get confused on what goes where.

- defective/dead component : stick of RAM has gone bad or something is on its last leg and crapping out. this could be possible knowing the age of your computer. solution: test the RAM first and foremost - this is done by creating a memtest86 boot floppy (google for the name of that program) and running tests on the RAM. see if HP (or whatever) gave you a diagnostics disc to run tests; if not, try downloading a program like SiSoft Sandra and running a "burn in test" or "diagnostic test" to see if you fail - go minimal first and build up.

knowing the age of the computer, i'm amazed it's held up that long, but it's not unheard of. one of the steps above is bound to help you find the problem. if you need to ask any other questions before you embark on troubleshooting with any steps above, feel free to ask.
