This sucks. I had issues with my last laptop after they replaced the hard drive with slow download speeds. The IT department could not figure it out and they got tired of listening to me complain so they replaced it with a new one (HP NC6220). I'm still getting crap for download speeds. Using broadband reports I got the following test results:

Test 1 17 kbps down, 66 kbps up
Test 2 147 kbps down 124 kbps up
Test 3 4 kbps down 856 kbps up

I then tested it on another connection here in my office and got:
1362 kbps down 2412 kbps up
I had a similar result on a 3rd connection

That would make it appear to be my connection, cable or something like that but here's what gets me. I took my bosses laptop (HP NC6000) and tested it on my connection and got
7768 kbps down and 1133 up.

When tested on the same connections I used to test mine I got consistent download speeds in the 7600-7900 kbps range.

if you're running XP Pro, that's a link to the drivers for your computer. you might try updating the network stuff and installing any hotfixes. i can't guarantee this will fix your problem though. that's definitely a weird one.

Thanks, this is where I started and I didn't notice any improvement. Contacted another member of the IT department and hopefully he will be out in a day or two to check into this.

Someone on another forum suggested it might be a switch port that is not auto-negotiating with the network port on my PC. I now know that it is not with my PC as I took my laptop to another office building at our location and got consistent download speeds of over 7000 kbps so I think it has something to do with the switch/router (or whatever they have installed in my building). Anyways, they are supposed to send someone out next week to check it out in more detail. Will update when I know more.

My thoughts is depending on your folks IT equipment is you have a bad blade port on either your router or switch (or both) Could have been during that power zippiedo da incident it messed up a setting or physically damaged the port. I'm thinking there is a software/setting glich, possible an bad ACL setting limiting your ID at that port. My guess is the router handling those switch ports, but it's possible it is the switch.

BTW I'm dealing with this at my work now. 2 weeks of reconfiguring due to a power glich caused by insufficent A/C.

i have heard of this before with someone else i know and it was necessary to go into the properties for "local area connection" (i.e. the network card) and change it from full duplex to half duplex or something similar. this was a problem with the driver though, i think? i wonder if you could look for some similar setting?

They switched out some networking stuff over the weekend and upgraded to some fiber optic lines (Or so I am told) and, damn, what a difference.
