well my laptop is doing a few strange things, getting random pop ups, soem display thigns change themselves and so on. i have mcafee, but the scan doesnt show anything, and it wont let me update the software, it says there is som error (and it also says that it is 21 months out of date??? i havent even had my laptop that long) also, down on the bottom right corner in the task bar thing it keeps getting a window that pops up saying theres a virus and i need download soem software to get rid of it. i dont want to download just anything, and id rather not pay.... espeacially since there is already a virus and i dont want the risk of my CC number getting taken. suggestions of what to use to get rid of this?

you need more than McAfee to protect your computer and that probably ain't a virus, it's probably worse - something like malware that will do things like hijack bank account windows, intercept your eBay account login info and cause you really awful stress. viruses normally just infect your files. malware/spyware does things like lead to identity theft - which do you think is worse?

just antivirus alone ain't enough and antivirus only prevents viruses, not trojans, spyware, keyloggers, malware, hijackers, ... man, the list goes on and on. i have a lot of informative posts around here on how to protect yourself and also how to get cleaned up.

i'll tell you this: it sounds like you have SpySheriff on your computer or SpyAxe, both of which are REALLY nasty infections. this is gonna be reaaaallll fun to clean up :)

i noticed it had bit defender in there, i went back to a post awhile ago you had alerting about a new virus, so i ran that, but it estimated it was going to take like 28 hours to run, so i stopped it, and it managed to stay on there somehow... one time before youve done a hijack this for me, and you asked what uwick is, its a bundle of programs from my school (U. of Washington) that has antivirus software, which is where i got mcafee from, which i removed after my first post, and restarted before i ran the hijack this


EDIT: i just now got a pop us message from windows (from the taskbar, that little yellow triangle with the ! in it) saying my computer is "infected with spyware pop up programs (OHPE ver 4.12-23)" so if that means something to you let me know.

i was right :) you have Zlob/Spyaxe/SpySheriff/etc. It's in this line here - BUT just deleting or fixing the line won't help, might make things worse :):

so, close all of your open programs - especially Internet Explorer, cause that's where this thing is rooted into your system! once everything is closed, open up HijackThis can choose "scan only". locate the two lines i just pointed out and put a checkmark next to them. next, click the "FIX" button.

once that's done, click on the Start menu and choose Run. type in this line and click OK:

ren %windir%\system32\hp917B.tmp hp917B.old

notice - there is a space after 'ren' and another after 'tmp'

after that's done, reboot. open hijackthis again. "scan and save logfile" then post me a new, fresh logfile.

i deleted the two lines, but it wouldnt let me run the thing you asked me to (ren %windir%\system32\hp917B.tmp hp917B.old) i copy and pasted it, and it still didnt work.but i rebooted anyway and ran hijack this again.

Download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite (link: http://www.ewido.net/en/download/). Install Ewido and check for updates. Don't scan with it yet.

If you have not already installed Ad-Aware SE 1.06, download it as well (link: http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/). Update it, but again, don't scan with it.

Download "SmitRemfix" (link: http://noahdfear.geekstogo.com/ **or** http://www.downloads.subratam.org/smitRem.exe) and save it to your desktop. Open the file and it will extract itself to a new folder called "SmitRem".

Now you will want to reboot your computer to safe mode by doing the following:

-> Restart your computer
-> After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8
-> Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
-> Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode



Safe Mode cleanup steps

Now that you are in safe mode (you'll know because it will say safe mode in the corners of the desktop), open the SmitRem folder on your desktop. Find the RunThis.bat and double-click it to run. It will scan the computer, remove the bad files, then do a Disk cleanup.

Once that is complete, proceed with the following steps:

Scan with ewido and fix what it finds
scan with AdAware and fix what it finds
When you are done with all three, reboot the computer normally.

If your desktop wallpaper has been changed by SpyAxe, you may need to go to the Control Panel and click Display > Desktop > Customize Desktop > Web > Uncheck Security Info if present. Now you should be able to use any wallpaper you want.

After doing all of that, you should visit Windows Update, select express install. After your computer has been checked, install all the updates it finds. After you are done, you shouldn't have to worry about SpyAxe ever again. Should you still have problems, please visit one of the security forums found here.

Once you've done the steps above, give me another Hijackthis logfile.

thanks, i printed that all out, when i get home from school ill do all that and get a hijack this for ya.

after i ran all three programs and rebooted, the little icon on the taskbar went away, and i stopped getting messages saying there was a critical error and i need to get software to fix it (which was the virus trying to get me to buy software and give them my bank info ect, im guessing) heres the hijack this you asked for...

that line wasnt in there :confused: the only thing that was different was the very last part, it was hpB0DB.tmp instead..... still get rid of it?

that's not good, that means it is still there.

can you try to locate that file, then rename it to something else (example: rename it from hpB0DB.tmp to hpB0DB.old?)

hey sorry i havent responded, i was gone all weekend and busy with school. i tried to locate the file but couldnt. so i delete that line anyway and see if it comes back again?

yeah, it might come back with a different filename. if it does, you're still infedcted with a backdoor.

you may need to unhide your system files and "show hidden files" on your system to be able to see that *.tmp file. here are some crude instructions:

see if you can find the file after doing that. if you can, rename it, then reboot.

Looks good. You'll want to go back and delete that file you renamed to prevent it from coming back.

After you've done that, Go into the Control Panel, double-click the System icon and a window will open. Click on the System Restore tab in that window, then turn off System Restore by filling in the checkbox. Click Apply, say "OK" to any of the warnings. Then, remove the checkbox (to turn System Restore back on), then click Apply again and then OK. The purpose of this is to turn off System Restore, which will purge all traces of those bad files you removed/deleted so they can't come back to haunt you later.
