View Full Version : DSL upload speed way too slow
Matt67C10 05-04-2006, 08:43 PM My DSL download speed is running fine, about 760 kb, but the upload speed is extremely slow, only about 30-60kb, according to speakeasy.net/speedtest. I also tried pcpitstop.com's test, which said it was unable to test my upload speed due to a possible firewall or hardware problem. I am not running any firewalls.
So far I've run all the Norton diagnostic, virus and spyware programs, cleaned up everything, called my dsl/isp provider- they told me I may have a problem with my nvidia network card. I removed and reinstalled the software, still downloads are fine but painfully slow on the uupload. My isp told me the test they ran came out to 150 kbs where it should be. My computer is perfoming nowhere near this. Now I really have no idea of what's going on. :( I've tried my wife's email and my email and both have problems uploading extremely slow. Any advice would be graciously appreciated.
Matt
shifty 05-04-2006, 11:19 PM don't know what version of windows you're running, that would help. XP come with built in firewall. also, often times a router will act as a hardware firewall and, even if you have just a modem, some DSL providers like earthlink will bundle a router into your modem :)
i can't tell you much about how clean your system is w/o a hijackthis log.
Matt67C10 05-05-2006, 07:37 AM I'm running Windows XP if this helps at all...I have a Zoom external modem. I use a local ISP company, called Enter.net.
shifty 05-05-2006, 10:01 AM something to be specific about - there is a difference between kilobytes and kilobits, but i don't know that it's as easy as a translation problem in this case.
XP has a built-in firewall, which should be left enabled unless you have some other firewall software - you would be a complete moron not to use a firewall on a broadband connection. if you're having problems connecting to a specific speed test site on the web because of a "firewall misconfiguration", then i wouldn't bother going there.
for speed tests, i normally use CNET:
http://reviews.cnet.com/7004-7254_7-0.html
they seem to be more accurate than most - although speakeasy is a great source as well.
does CNET report you going that slow also? (no one site is a good indicator - unless they're in your back yard, they'll always get a lower number than your ISP will)
shifty 05-05-2006, 10:04 AM PS - some notes to add here:
got any filesharing software like Kazaa, Bearshare or limewire on your machine? they often run in the background and if people are downloading from you, it will kill your upload.
if you are actively downloading to the point your entire download speed is maxxed out, your upload will slow to a crawl.
your ISP is only required to give you "up to" 150k/sec. that speed will vary depending on a lot of things - your distance to the closest CO and other stuff.
i'd still like to see your HijackThis logfile if you can download that software, "Scan and save logfile" and post the contents here.
look under your modem, get me the model # if you don't mind. i'm just curious to know what you got or if your modem will have any built-in tools to play with for troubleshooting.
Matt67C10 05-05-2006, 10:32 AM Thanks, shifty. :) I'll do that this afternoon, by 4:30 at the latest. I'm at work right now :(
shifty 05-05-2006, 01:09 PM i'm leaving town yet again this evening or tomorrow morning. Heading to Gainesville, FL (from Atlanta) to see my girlfriend's half brother graduate before going into the Navy as a pilot. Will be out of town all weekend - will try to do some research for you before I head out, but ... might not be till Monday or later.
cableguy0 05-05-2006, 04:43 PM if you previously didnt have the higher speeds i wouldnt expect them. dsl will never guarantee a speed because they cant. the farther you are from there distribution center the slower the speeds will be. the only thing that really has a fast upload is cable.
shifty 05-05-2006, 09:59 PM my cable doesn't even have fast upload (but 6mbit or higher download). the only thing that has high upload is fiber or some of the newer packages from Speakeasy and whatnot. there are still SDSL packages out there you can get also...or just get a full or partial T-line into your house
cableguy0 05-06-2006, 02:20 AM we are 768 up here but comcast just upped it. 7 down now i think
Matt67C10 05-08-2006, 04:43 PM Shifty, PM with Hijack This logfile sent. Thanks
shifty 05-08-2006, 05:21 PM Replied. You have at least three hijackers in the bunch. I also notice you're setup to use a proxy. If it's a malicious proxy, it could be the cause of your problem. If it's something Norton is doing, it could also be your problem.
Fix the things I said and get back to me. We'll take it to PM.
Matt67C10 05-08-2006, 06:32 PM Thanks! :)
oscareltemblo 05-09-2006, 12:33 AM Hey my connection is 1906.5 Kbps - You 1906.5 kbps is this good for cable modem.
shifty 05-09-2006, 10:50 AM yeah, that's 2megabit, "shakey". not bad. faster than most DSL connections.
Matt67C10 05-09-2006, 11:57 AM My connection here at school is 6,200. I was amazed when I saw that!
shifty 05-09-2006, 05:04 PM mine at home is usually in the 6000+ range. i use cable. usually cable has much faster download speeds, but people gripe because the connection is "shared" and troubleshooting problems like a bad tap can be frustrating for hte customer. i work with signals and with cable headends (along with modulators for satellite, terrestrial and cable) at work, so i can usually pinpoint the problem for the techs. i got Comcast to give me 5 months of free service last year :D i told them i had a bad tap and they refused to believe me. i told the support person to write my comments in my first support request and give me the service number. they sent out techs at least once every 2-3 weeks for 5 months until, lo and behold, they found the bad tap exactly where i said it would be :) when the rep told me what it was, i told them to look up my original call, gave them the reference and said, "i been sayin that for 5 months now. you just cost me 5 months of miserable service, and you better be crediting that back now :)"
they did.
actually, i think my free service ran out last month or month before that. ah, it has been nice!
