I believe all SM-420s were loud like that. I actually have ever owned not even 4-5 stick vehicles, so I might just be talking out my a....

I had a 63 4x4 and I cant remember if it was that loud or not. plus I have all the carpet and sound deadner out of the truck for repainting, so that could be why its louder too!

It shouldn't be real loud. I would guess someone ran it without lube. It will probably run a long time, as long as you don't mind the noise.

I was thinking about going to an auto turbo 350. I have the divorced rockwell, could I put in the auto and get a drive shaft shop to make the new shaft to the rockwell?

Personally I like driving the old rock boxes. My 60 has the 420, and my 71 blazer has the 465. I'd recommend keeping it :)

If you DO decide to change, most people would say that the TH350 was a crazy choice when you could go to the 700r4 and get an overdrive.

The 4x4 is not a divorced transer case, right?

You might be able to get a gear vendors overdrive in there if it's divorced.

GV's are pricey but I did have one mated to my 350 turbo with attached NP205. I would suggest if you cannot live with what you have -- find a 700 R4 with a NP208. Probably drive shafts would need some mods besides the mounts. Then again I do not own a 61 to know for sure.
