Hello all...I'm no computer tech but I had a nasty version of the about.blank hijacker on my system. I found a tool called Adware Away that claims to remove this and other really hard to get rid of hijackers. It is a pay program but I can tell you it works very well. I scanned my brand new machine and had three hijackers and removed them and I scanned my old machine and found one. I use the adaware se software and the spybot search and destroy and niether program caught the hijackers I had. They also offer an option to check the log if you have a new version they haven't made a remover for yet and send you a new version tailored to the problem you have. It worked great for me.

This is a specialized tool that only cleans up a few things. This is their information on the program from Download.com:

Version 3.0.2 can remove 11 browser hijackers, 3 desktop hijackers, "your computer is infected" or "spyware infection" desktop background message and securityuptodate browser hijacker.

From the internet about a previous version:

Adware Away 2.2.5, from FlyYaNet Technology, removes adware, spyware, Trojans, and other malicious software. In addition to removing the unwanted programs, it provides detailed information about just what was removed. It includes specialized removers designed to wipe out every trace of 50 common problems.

Download.com users rate this 3/5 stars. Adaware SE and Spybot Search & Destroy both got 4½/5 stars, and eliminate several more problems.

Tools like SpywareGuard and SpywareBlaster installed on your computer prevent you from ever getting hijacked in the first place.

More info on cleanup tools and tools to prevent infection can be found in this thread:

Something that scares me about "Adware Away" is they have so many grammatical problems with their english. Their information (and website) has more typos in it than a phishing email trying to steal your bank/ebay/paypal info :D

ZDNet also stopped allowing users to download the product, that's not very common, I'd like to know why! :)

Thanks for the suggestion, I'm going to dig into this program a little bit more and see what it's all about.

Thanks shifty. I was just tossing it out there because it worked for me. The about.blank hijacker I had was really bad and i couldn't do anything that required internet explorer. The program removed it for me and I needed it to because I have hijack this but nobody to ask what all the stuff in the log means. Unfortunately the hijackers I had came in on an automatic update of the antivirus software that came with my new computer. so even after I found the problem and repaired it I had to blow away that antivirus program and install a different one or every time the antivirus loaded it came back. The adware away program did make it easy for me to see where the problem came from though and thats how I knew what to get rid of. If it's not a good program please feel free to let me know so I can find something else. Thanks again.

I understand - I'm not trying to bag on you, and I believe this thing was probably your salcation.

That baout.blank thing is supposed to be incredibly nasty, right up there with SpyAxe, Winfixer and VX2. I'm happy to know what fixed it :D

I'm not saying Adware Away is a bad program, it's just a relative unknown. I'd be sure to supplement it with some stuff listed in that post I linked up.
