To keep your fingers from getting all nasty from spreading seam sealer with them. Dip your finger in thinner before you start and keep dipping as you work and it will not stick. The trick is to keep your fingers wet with thinner. Body man showed me that.
at the shop we work at we wear latex gloves or use a acid brush. it works the best. also not to sound like and expert but when you apply most any seam sealer. you should allways use a etch primer before you seam seal or a good epoxy primer. 99.9% of seam sealers dont have any zinc in them , and that s about the only thing to halt rust. most etch primers have alot of zinc. i have never seen a epoxy primer have zinc, but any primer is better than . just seam sealer over a weld. hope this helps

Thanks for the comments guys! The cab is now in epoxy, and looks really good! It wasn't that hard to spray, and the PPG DP40 went on amazingly well. It's nice to see it in one color to get an idea of just how far it's come over the past few months. I can't see daylight when I look down anymore

AlreadyGone, I'm not sure I'll have the truck done for watrous, but I will definitely have my 84 vette there if I don't. I go every year and I'll be sure to stop by if I see you around your truck. It really is a great show.

any problems keeping everything lined up with such extensive metal removal ?

muddpile
07-04-2007, 08:06 PM
It actually lined up really well. It took a lot of pulling, pushing, measuring and bending, but once the cab corners were in the rockers fit right in place. The floor pans didn't seem to have any effects on structure at all.

Well, an update for everyone. I just looked through hundreds of pics, and its kind of hard to see bodywork going on, so I figured I'd just post my favorite ones.

And.........Drumroll Please........The cab is one color

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v351/muddpile/IMG_2215.jpg

This is with the epoxy only. The cab now has 4 coats of K38 high build primer over that and looks to be nice and straight. The interior and jambs will be orange shortly, and I will have pics of that. This is getting pretty exciting for me, as I can see the light at the end of the tunnel.

The interior, jambs and firewall are now orange. I highly reccommend any PPG Deltron products, as in my opinion it looks great (I'm really partial to the orange of course, so that helps). The doors, fenders, inner fenders, cowl, hood and exterior of the cab are all going to snowball together and get mounted/oranged shortly.

Mudpile, nice work. Did you do all of the painting as well? Did you have experience with that or was it self taught ala the welding?

I don't know anyone in Nokomis but I was asked if I was interested in playing Provincials with the Chiefs this year. If I am ever going through I to will have to have a look at this extensively rebuilt truck.

Thanks for the comments guys! I can't believe this truck will actually see the road again one day, and without a clear view of the road between my feet

A few answers:
69GMCor70Chevy: Yeah, the painting was self-taught as well. I used to build model cars and used an airbrush to paint them all, and I just went into this with the view of it being the same thing, just bigger. I bought a good gun and good paint, so I knew if anything went wrong it was either poor prep or user error. It looks good to me, and it didn't take me too long to get a hang of the gun. I've never painted a vehicle before, but I know now that I will do more.

As for the Cheifs, I'm not on the team but I party with them after pretty well every game. Good bunch of guys. We haven't had much luck in previous years, but we are in a tough league too. You're welcome to view the truck anytime in my shop.

Boog: There's been times where I've just taken a few weeks off here and there to clear my head so I don't lose the interest or fun, but now I'm back on my schedule. Since it's all prep and painting right now, I'm in the shop around 5-6 hours a night, and it is totally worth it.

samwise68: My view on a project like this is that if I can save this one, there are very few out there that can't be saved. People actually laughed when I told them I was fixing the truck up and not parting it out. It had zero sentimental value to me, as I bought it just because I wanted an orange 72 chevy and parts weren't that expensive or hard to come by. I wouldn't trade this experience for the world.

Thanks for the compliments guys, and I'll have more updates soon. The doors and inner fenders are in epoxy, and the hood, cowl and fenders will be tomorrow if all goes according to plan.

Reassembly is coming along great. Lots of work, but it's actually fun work unlike the bodywork and rust removal. It's like a big model kit.

Sound deadener installed on the firewall, floor, rear cab wall, and inner doors. No more tinny old truck sound.

It runs! That's right, after two years it runs. It has dual 2" and ramhorns right now that dump down a foot past the cab. It sounds mean as hell. With the timing chain not stretched to hell and the timing set properly with a fully funcitioning ignition, you can actually hear the cam. I was told when I bought it, it had a "cam". No idea of duation, lift, etc, but it is mildly choppy.

The painless harness is pretty well 100% aside from some wiper motor/sprayer confusion. It is a really nice setup and really easy to work with. Anywho, here's the photos.

Notice the bed has now entered the building? Yeah, it's that close.

muddpile
11-25-2007, 11:54 AM
The door handles and window cranks are off ebay. I've had them over a year now, so I can't remember who I got them off on there. They are chromed aluminum. They are decent quality, a little wobbly, but not bad. They are assembled with set screws, and look pretty sweet in my opinion. Kinda modernizes a stock door panel. I think I scored the set of 4 for $40 at the time.

You better be pround as the truck is coming together great. Where did you get the carpet on the bottom of the door ? I am assuming you bought it like that cause I can se piping along the top edge. Did you just glue it to the bottom of the door or glue it to a piece of wood or something and screw that to the door?

muddpile
12-07-2007, 10:45 PM
The carpet on the bottom of the door came from Scott's Super Trucks in Penhold, Alberta. I can't remember what it was worth, but he also had matching kick panel carpet (I'm building speaker kicks, so I didn't go for the kick carpet). It has a cardboard-type backing and I attached it to the door with contact cement. I did the same with the headliner.

The more I look at these pics, the more I think the truck needs to go lower with some modern wheels, likely 20's. What's everyone else think?

That truck is sure starting to look real super and you should be proud of your accomplishment. Keep at it and it will be ready for this summers August Super Run in Saskatoon. I really like the stance on your truck, what are your front and rear lowering specs and tire sizes?

muddpile
03-05-2008, 08:49 AM
The rear is a DJM flip kit, so about a 5.5"-6" drop (leaf truck). The Front is ECE spindles and springs, 4" drop. The tires are 255/70/15 on all corners.

Thanks guys! It's still not QUITE roadworthy. Tonight the bedliner was rolled in (long painful job, but worth it) and after that all I have left is a little power polishing, set the timing, tune the carb and get the remaining exhaust bent up for it. I still need an alignment with the new springs, but I plan on driving it a little and letting them settle first. This weekend is the maiden voyage, to where I have no idea, but I'm looking forward to it.

If you want to see this truck in person sometime, it will be in the Majestics car show in Regina the last weekend of April, or at any number of other events around the province.

As for the clear front markers, love em. They blend in really nice with the chrome.

I'm sure the truck will see Stoon at some point, after all, I built it as a driver.

The paint is an industrial forklift orange. The pictures don't do it justice as to just how orange it really is... I don't have the code handy unfortunately, but it is a PPG Deltron single stage.

04-09-2008, 07:09 AM
Well, the test drive went well enough. Tons of torque, decent ride, super quiet inside, drives really nice. Only a few minor glitches to work out, then it's off to the exhaust shop (dumps at the back of the cab at the moment, no mufflers....) Other than that, I guess I can call it done, and I must say it feels great. Keep an eye on the 60-66 section, as my next build is a 64 short fleet, and it will be as far from stock as this 72 is close....

I've almost got all the rust cut out of the drivers side floor, but won't bother taking pics of that until it's done and ready to weld. There isn't much floor left after the large amount of rust is gone, but I have patch panels to cover all of it.

I've got the differential primed between the springs and should have the rest of it including the drum backing plates done tomorrow.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v351/muddpile/IMG_0510.jpg

I also mounted my instrument cluster to see how it will look and fit, as the gauges aren't in the original places or the original sizes (and yes, I know some are really crooked, but I just slid them into the holes for fit). It fits really good, and I really like the look of it on the orange dash. I was thinking of painting the entire interior a semi-gloss grey to make it look more modern, but I'm leaning towards orange again.

Where did you get the bezels from? They look sick. :metal:

muddpile
04-30-2008, 07:05 PM
The bezel is a stock one I sanded smooth, fibreglassed shut and cut my own holes in. I then sprayed everything with SEM texture paint and airbrushed skulls on it all. A bit of work, but it was 100% worth it.

SRH916
04-30-2008, 09:47 PM
Did you use a stencil?

muddpile
04-30-2008, 10:47 PM
Yes, it was an airbrush stencil. It wasn't that wide, and very hard to blend as the edges were just random fragments of bones/webbing. The gauge panel was simple, as the gauges cut into a lot of the blending. The glove box door is bigger with no interruptions, so it was a colossal pain...
