View Full Version : quitting pop
messed up c-10 05-20-2006, 10:54 PM Ok so about a month ago I was starting to get sick from stress and was losing weight (the stress is over now mostly I graduated with my associates with a 3.5) but anyways I used it to my advantage to quit drinking pop. So far I've been doing pretty good. I never get the headaches that others who quit seem to get. I do get tired sometimes especially when I work graveyard and then I might drink some regular pop. Does anyone know if I should drink Diet Pop, I've been drinking that Diet Sprite Zero stuff and it tastes just like regular pop to me now. I'm trying to cut out caffine and sugars so I figured this stuff was ok, since it has niether, or should I just stick to water and milk? I'm going to start working out like crazy this summer so I might drink some gatorade too.
69_hafton 05-20-2006, 11:07 PM Man, I always get a 2 day headache when I quit drinking Pepsi. I try about twice a year and always end up back where I started. Can't stand the diet stuff, and don't like coffee, especially during the summer. I drink Gatorade alot - I work outside, and try subbing it for sodas, but it's just not the same without the caffiene in the morning. I work graveyard frequently (on a rotating 12hr shift), and see others who can do it without the caffiene, and wish I'd have never started drinking the stuff.
Brainchild 05-20-2006, 11:55 PM lol pop is my only bad habit,I'm hanging on to it for a while longer.I have cut back and drink lemonade about half the time now.I still have to have the caffine rush in the morning though:(
Burb84 05-21-2006, 12:14 AM Ok, I don't drink soda, but I saw this and had to pop in -- pun intended.
I'm on the other side of the coin -- coffee. You never see me without a cup (actually, have one right now and it's 12am) And the headaches are killers. But, if you put up with them for a day or so, they get better -- or just wein yourself off the soda. I know, I know .. why don't I wein myself off coffee?? I'm a horrible weiner (yes, you read that right, I just said "horrible weiner") I try to slowly get off coffee, but it never fails...I'm on my 2nd pot of coffee in the morning, and I can't stop myself from making a 3rd. Hence the reason I can't quit smoking lol Anyway, all I can say is, give it up completely. My sister finally did and believe it or not, her health has improved. She suffered from horrible allergies, and as soon as she gave up the sode, she can breath better, feels better and she doesn't have to take all those meds she used to have to take just to breath at night. (Of course, she was a 3 2liter bottle a day girl - I'm sure your not that bad). I definately say switch to water -- it'll clean out your sysem.
chevy_fatman 05-21-2006, 01:18 AM I stopped drinking coke and any other sodas 5-6 monthas ago, never had headaches, but I do drink 1 in a great while, I also stopped drinking coffee and milk at about the same time, all Idrink is gatorade and fruit juices, quitting smoking was also the best thing I've done (going on 1 year) and I did it cold turkey and I cant stand the smell now lol.
shifty 05-21-2006, 02:13 AM i don't drink that crap. i stopped a couple years ago and lost 10 pounds when i did. i drank about 3-4 a day.
i drink the Sprite Zero also, it does taste like the real deal, all of the coca cola "zero" products taste so much like the real thing it's scary.
i drink that - i also like the three different flavors of Fresca and i like Diet Barq's root beer.
HERE'S THE SUCKY PART: i have removed all caffiene and sugar items from my diet. now, whenever i get a sweet tea or something from Wendy's (their new Frescata sandwiches are great!), i get so freakin buzzed out after about 45 minutes that i can't tell my head from my ass! not that there's much difference :D
Medicanman71 05-21-2006, 02:52 AM You caffine fiends
I like RC cola.
I drink too much milk, but i never get that rBST garbage.
I'm drinking on a fast food "med" size coke atm and i can feel my teeth screaming nooooooo
rodnok1 05-21-2006, 08:06 AM I drink soda to keep weight on. It's just about my only vice besides swearing too much. My wife can stop drinking soda and loose weight in a week. I have a cousin that if she has any caffeine she turns into a freaking spastic nut case then crashes...
boraxman 05-21-2006, 09:41 AM Soda is terrible for you weather its diet or regular.
LUV2XCLR8 05-21-2006, 09:53 AM I converted in the last 2 years from Dr. Pepper to Diet Dr. Pepper,
then I went from Diet DP to Diet Coke, then now to Diet Coke w/
Splenda, I feel 10 times better than I ever did, No headaches if I
go w/ out anything for a few days, and my digestive system does
seem more regulated, they just need to lower the damn prices
BillGent 05-21-2006, 09:54 AM I Don't drink much of it but when I do its the Fresca Blackberry. Its pretty good.. No caffeine, No sugar.

im a dew fiend I try to stop, but water is too bland and other than that I would have nothing to drink at work
cstanley 05-22-2006, 12:29 AM careful with the diet stuff. if it contains aspartame (nutrasweet, sweet 'n low, equal) it has recently been connected as a carcinogen (cancer-causing agent) in lab animals. a harvard study, i think. you might google it. so far, the splenda hasn't been linked to anything (yet.) the aspartame will cause the headaches and nausea. natural sugar is still the best choice (if you must.) many docs recommend staying away from all of it (especially anything artificial.)
Brainchild 05-22-2006, 01:03 AM what about plain water what ever happen to that drink
you mean that white stuff that comes out of the faucet, and smells like a swimming pool?........NO THANKS!
And I'm not Buying water either:crazy:
ed455 05-22-2006, 08:35 AM Soda is terrible for you weather its diet or regular.
Yeah, I've read some scary stuff about it.
Don't know if this is true, but it was convincing. I read that cancer could be practically eliminated if we would maintain proper PH in our systems. Since pop is full of acid, that is counter-productive to that end.
There is also some evidence that aspartame *may* be linked to early onset alzheimers. It is proven that aspartame causes carbohydrate craving in most people, which is counter-productive to the purpose of diet soda.
All I know is that every time I quit drinking soda, I lose 10 lbs. almost immediately. And I drink DIET caffiene-free soda. The sad thing is . . . I love the stuff.
flatblackclassic 05-22-2006, 06:31 PM All that high fructose corn syrup and artificial sweetener is the reason we are a nation of 80 percent obese people, type 2 diabetes is through the roof, and our children are fatter and lazier than ever! I cut myself off from sodas about a year ago and never looked back. I still smoke (not cigarettes, but less than 1 gram a day of the good green stuff, not enough to make 2 cigarettes) and drink (less than 1 pint a month) and feel healthier than I have in my life. Now that I haven't had a soda mixed with alchohol in over a year it tastes like poison when I drink one. I get sick and dizzy almost immediattly! And we wonder why our kids in school are lazy and don't want to do anything, they are drinking POISON!

I agree totally Stan, Except for the sugar part, the drinks sweetened w/ SPLENDA
do not have any of the stuff you listed like you said above, the reason I switched ;)
67ChevyRedneck 05-23-2006, 09:14 AM I've tried to quit several times. I NEVER get headaches until I try to quit soda. I'm hooked on Dr Pepper and sweet tea. Y'all got me thinkin' 'bout how bad it is for me again..... I think I'll try to quit again. Tomorrow sounds good.
cstanley 05-23-2006, 11:21 AM dr. pepper is awesome! it has anti-freeze in it.
'course you haven't had a real dr. pepper until you've had a Dublin Dr. Pepper. the original bottling plant is in dublin, tx, near my hometown. they still make it there using Imperial Pure Cane Sugar instead of the corn/fructose syrups, and always in glass bottles. that stuff is a completely different taste. it'll have you bouncing off the walls in no time!
Tynee 05-23-2006, 12:51 PM There is nothing in the world quite like that first drink of Diet Mountain Dew in the morning, except the second drink, and the third drink, and......
Seriously, I TRY to limit my intake to one can per day. Some days I'll do as much as 3 cans and a 24 Oz. Those days are rare, though. I try to limit my caffeine intake to keep my blood pressure down.
On a related note, according to Snopes and a few other sources that came up with a quick google search, the Carbonic Acid and Citric Acid in cokes aren't as bad for you as people would have you believe:
http://www.snopes.com/cokelore/acid.asp
you haven't had a real dr. pepper until you've had a Dublin Dr. Pepper
Amen to that!!! I had a room mate for a while from Stephenville. He always brought back a case. There is nothing in the world like an orignal formula Dr. Pepper or Mt. Dew in the glass bottle with the metal cap. Let it sit in the Freezer for about 30 minutes, then kick back and let all the troubles of life pass away

I have a can of it at home, but I usually see it in bottles. It really does taste better. I'm diabetic, so I hardly ever have any. :whine:

DangerBoy 05-23-2006, 03:23 PM The phosophoric acid in them is the nasty stuff. It shoots your blood acidity way up so your body has to scavenge calcium from your bones to neutralize it, hence we have so many middle aged people with early stages of osteoporosis.
