'98 Silverado 1500---Any idea why low beam headlights don't work--both headlights? Daytime running lights (low beam bulb) work when headlight switch is off, but when you turn the switch on, the low beam lights go off (but high beam works). Have replaced switch, but no change. The wiring to the bulbs is tan, but no tan wires at the switch--any idea what color wire at switch controls low beam?
Is there perhaps a defective module between the switch and the bulb that is causing the electricity to be diverted away from the tan low beam wire when the switch is turned on?

Had the same problem with my 98. Adjustin the tilt up and down had caused the wires to become brittle and break off right at the connector. Wasnt fixable so just changed out the whole switch. Everything working so far. Had to replaced the switch again :( months later because i had broken off the hazard light button again. Found really cheap on ebay....

I had the same problem with my 96 Z71, it was the multifunction switch. Which is the cruise/turn signal/wiper switch. The wiring harness runs all the way down the column to the rectangular black box that it plugs into. Dealer wanted $300. A friend of mine got it for $210. Then I looked on ebay and could have bought it for $75.:whine: It takes about 2 hours to do the whole repair, if you have the right tools.
I have changed a few of these, and now I goop silicone around all the wires going into the multifunction switch. Keeps everything moving as one. Seems to have cured the problem.

Thanks for all you guys' advice.
I finally located the problem. It was a defective DRL (daytime running lights) fuse---a black cube (about 1" x 1/2") located on the firewall just to the left of the steering column. It took only about 30 seconds to replace it and cost me only $5.
