View Full Version : filler showing thru primer......... QKENUF4U 05-29-2006, 07:16 PM im using a EPOXY primer and RAGE bondo. it keeps showing thru.(*the shape shows not the actual bondo) what am i doing wrong ? MARTINSR 05-29-2006, 07:39 PM You are not doing one single thing wrong. When ever you prime over filler you are going so see SOMETHING. I mean, the filler is going to have a different texture, it is going to be sanded to likely have 180/120 scratches (I hope you are not leaving coarser than 180/120 scratches) the surrounding metal isn't going to have these scratches. Soooooo, the primer, unsanded, is going to go into these scratches and you will see them. After you finish the filler, I personally don't like to apply epoxy primer, urethane is for me. Urethane fills much better, just prime and block and you are ready for paint. Brian >X< 05-30-2006, 12:11 AM what he said. epoxy is made to stick not fill, you'll need to pick up some urethane for that. filler is super absorbent, metal isnt so its going to be noticeable. 72CSTC5 05-31-2006, 08:37 PM Silly question but you did not leave the filler higher than the metal did you? It is going to be hard to get rid of that line if you didnt block your bodywork perfectly smooth. Also your adjacent paint may be lifting around the edge of the bodywork if the paint is cheap with the chemicals in the primer. >X< 05-31-2006, 08:44 PM pretty much all problems related to filler/primer work can be taken care of using 3m dry guide coat- everybody should try it once 70c10swb 05-31-2006, 10:00 PM so epoxy is best for bare metal? if so then the process is expoy>filler>urethane? sorry if this is off topic. stllookn 06-02-2006, 01:15 PM 70c10...Good question...I am waiting for an answer to that one. I hate having to sand epoxy primer as well. I have seen Boyd and Chip use DP90 epoxy after sand blastting but then start with the filler and whatever else. I guess that would mean that they expect to cover that epoxy completely and never have to sand it. BigDan3131 06-06-2006, 03:30 AM 70c10...Good question...I am waiting for an answer to that one. Thats right, they DP it first then depending on how rough it is use either plastic or the %&*$# skim coat stuff(forgot the real name) and work the vehicle smooth. Then you use filler primer and after you have it glass smooth you can use the DP again as a sealer depending on your taste of light or dark base. Billla 06-06-2006, 11:45 AM I've been using a self-etching primer on bare metal then priming with DPLF. Plan is to apply filler A/R, then surfacer and topcoat. All PPG stuff. |
