View Full Version : 72 2wd blazer build
bagged74 06-06-2006, 12:21 AM This is my thread to cover the build of my 72 2wd blazer. I purchased this Blazer from a board member in the Dallas area early this year. It was in a general state of disrepair. It hadn't been driven in some time. The interior was non-existent, and what was there was not correct for the truck.
I was happy to get it none the less.
heres what she looked like when I picked her up
bagged74 06-06-2006, 12:26 AM I got it roadworthy and started driving in a little. I put on a new set of tires and did some minor mechanical repair. Then I decided it was time for an altitude adjustment. I got some 3" drop spindles and cut a coil off the front springs. The guy that I bought the blazer from gave me some drop springs for the rear so I put those in also.
bagged74 06-06-2006, 12:29 AM Of course after I got it lowered I had to get some bling on there. I got a good deal on some 20" Coys Rodders and Falken tires. The fit is not perfect, but the looked better than the rally wheels that were on it before.
I also added a flushmount fuel filler door because I cant stand the look of the gas cap on the quarter panel.
bagged74 06-06-2006, 12:35 AM The truck was originally a low option 6cyl/3 spd truck. Somewhere along the line it had been converted to a 350/4spd. The 350 runs good, but the Saginaw 4spd is a little noisy. I guess that doesnt matter though since it is now sitting in the shop floor. This is what she looked liek under the hood when I got it.
bagged74 06-06-2006, 12:39 AM Soon after i got to this point I decided to tear it down to fix the rockers and patch a couple of places in the floor. Well this got a little out of hand and the body is now on the rotisserie. I have sandblasted the whole underside of the tub. I also sandblasted the windshield frame and dash for good measure. I put some epoxy primer on it today. I will get some pics of this up soon.
bagged74 06-06-2006, 10:07 PM Well the poor old frame was needing some attention. I used about 6 cans of over cleaner and several hours with the pressure washer to get it this clean. Sandblasting will clean it up nicely though.
FuelCellGuy 06-06-2006, 10:41 PM Lookin' sweet. What is wrong with the fit of the wheels??
bagged74 06-06-2006, 10:56 PM too much backspacing on the rear. they are too far up under the fender for me. It fits perfect on the front though.
FuelCellGuy 06-06-2006, 11:04 PM http://www.ezaccessory.com/Wheel_Adapter_5_Lug_5_To_5_Lug_5_p/5500-5500.htm
I used these on the back of my Blazer. I had the same problem. I used the 1.5" version. VERY well made. Would be cheaper than a new set of wheels and just as safe. Later, mark
N2TRUX 06-06-2006, 11:38 PM Progress is good. Keep it up buddy...:metal:
n2billet 06-07-2006, 06:58 AM Glad to see you step off the deep end  Once you get the tub back on the chassis, the hard part (mental) is over. ;)

I'm running those on my 67 swb also. Got from same guy. Very good quality and fitment. I haven't had a single problem in 2,000 miles that they've been on. I got the 1-1/2" spacers on 20x8.5" wheels w/ 5.25" BS.
bagged74 07-02-2006, 09:54 PM I really wanted to get the stance right on this one. Its pretty easy to get the front down low, but the back is always a pain. I knew a bolt in notch or a regular "c notch" wasnt going to cut it. I bought an 8pc step notch kit and proceded to bend and cut it to fit the contours of the rear frame. I know some of you "original" guys are probably gonna throw rocks at me......but I did cut a big hunk out of a factory 2wd frame.
Once I got the notch in I ran into another problem.......trailing arms hitting the frame. Luckily I had 10ft of 2x3 1/4" wall tubing, so I made some new trailing arms. This still did not completely fix the situation in the rear. I didnt want to mount the bags over or in front of the axle because I have dreams of having some sort of exhaust system in that area. so I decided to notch the trailing arms for the bag mounts. this gave me the clearance I needed and let me mount the bag approximately in the stock spring location.
bagged74 07-02-2006, 10:05 PM This leaves me with the frame sitting level at 2.5" off the ground. I really want it a tad lower in the front so.........now I have to decide if I want to section the crossmember, or Z the frame, or leave it alone.
BigMike 07-02-2006, 11:29 PM Wow, that is gonna be one sick little Blazer once it's done. I've had 3 Blazers but all 4X4's, always a soft spot in my heart for those 2wd Blazers. Keep on posting pics, no matter how insignificant you may think they are :c2:
Wish I had the funds and the lower back (blown L5/S1) to do my 69 that way...Little bit at a time I guess.

Captkaos 07-06-2006, 04:32 PM Sweet Progress!
FnLow69 07-10-2006, 10:32 PM any new progress...looks tits man keep up the awsome work...
bagged74 07-11-2006, 12:05 AM I turned the frame upside down tonight and finished the welding. I also made some exhaust passages in the trailing arm crossmember. Tomorrow I will start painting some stuff. And I promise to take some new pics.
72CSTC5 07-11-2006, 12:10 AM Any luck on the pics of your rotisserie for me?
bagged74 07-11-2006, 12:13 AM Dang man, Im sorry I completely forgot. I will take some tomorrow. I been running like
72CSTC5 07-11-2006, 12:13 AM No problem, also how did you clean up the bottom side of the Blazer, sand blast or just sanded everything?
bagged74 07-11-2006, 12:15 AM sand blasting is the only way to go. I did the whole bottom side in about 1.5 hrs.
bagged74 07-29-2006, 12:29 AM Progress has been slow. Between work, trying to spend a little time with the family and the dang HOT weather I havent gotten much done lately. I have everything painted and the front suspension put back together. I found some carnage inside the rearend so now that is setting me back a little.
Here are a couple of pics my new front rotors and the trailing arms that I built.
72CSTC5 07-29-2006, 01:05 AM Looks good, keep the pics coming. Thanks for the pics by the way!
SCOTI 07-29-2006, 11:17 AM What's the reason for the 'notch' where the rear-end would be positioned?
bagged74 07-29-2006, 11:45 AM The notch is where the bag mounts, its actually just in front of the axle.
SCOTI 07-29-2006, 05:42 PM Ahhhhh . . ..... I should have looked closer @ the pic. Notched to maintain the same ride height @ a slightly higher air pressure for a better ride?
bagged74 07-30-2006, 10:11 PM This might help.................
bagged74 07-30-2006, 10:17 PM Alright so I FINALLY got my rearend back together and back under the frame. Installed the new urethane bushings in my "custom";) panhard bar. I installed the front brakes with the new drilled rotors. Its starting to feel like I am making some progress again, but im sure that wont last long.
bagged74 07-30-2006, 10:31 PM Here are a couple more, to give you a better view of the tubular trailing arms. You can also see the exhaust passages that I made in the trailing arm crossmember.
SOON2BLAZE 07-31-2006, 05:23 PM killer!
N2TRUX 08-02-2006, 11:41 PM Looks good. What ya gonna do for rear brakes?
bagged74 08-02-2006, 11:58 PM I was thinkin about not having any;)
nah, I have some crossdrilled rotors on order to match the front.
DStewart 08-03-2006, 01:17 AM Excellent work, that is going to be one bad ass Blazer.
bagged74 08-13-2006, 09:42 PM I finally got the body back on the frame.
I wanted to coat the bottom of the tub with something that would seal everything and kind of deaden everything a little. I ended up going with Raptor Liner spray in bed liner material. It is a urethane based spray on, I guess time will tell how well it works. It seems nice, I am contemplating coating the inside of the tub as well.
The frame is coated with POR 15, the bottom of the tub is bedliner, and it has new poly body mounts, so hopefully it will last a while.
You can also see some progress on the firewall in these pics.
smbrouss70 08-14-2006, 08:05 AM Sweeeeeeeeeeeeet!

bagged74 08-30-2006, 10:37 PM I made a little more progress. I got the front power steering box and centerlink all installed(it much easier to push around the shop now..lol) I also got the motor mounts and tranny crossmember fabbed up.

gringoloco 09-24-2006, 02:16 AM Bagged- Got a few questions for you:
- How big is your step notch? standard 8"? Are you using all of it?
- I see you have 4x4s on the axle to roll around; how close is the pinch weld from touching the ground if you pull them out and dump the front?
- How high does the notch protrude into the bed area? What are your plans for it? Back seat?
Thanks -Chris
LUV2XCLR8 09-24-2006, 07:21 AM Progress looks killer, I am assuming no rear seat? just a Roadster :metal:

The notch WAS an 8" I cut it down to 6.5" because thats about all the room I wanted to give up on the inside of the bed. I use every bit of the 6.5".
If I take the 4x4s out of the front and rear, the frame sits level at 2" off the ground from front to back. I havent measured the pinch weld.
The notch comes into the bed floor about 3 or 3.5" I cant remember right off hand. It will be covered with sheetmetal and the seat should cover that, even if I have to modify the seat a little. I cant afford to lose the seat because my wife and kids like to cruise sometimes too.
bigdon-70blazer 01-04-2007, 10:26 PM Please please please, post some more pics of the blazer body on the rotisserie and please explain some of the details about that adventure. I am getting ready to build my own, they are too expensive and I am going to place my 70 blazer body on it. Thanks....great site, I just found you all!
MT1972cheyenne 01-04-2007, 10:47 PM WOW! nice!
I forgot how sexy the 2wd Blazers are! Now I want one. I spent 8 years looking for a short/fleet. I'd probably spend 20 years to find a 2wd Blazer!
bagged74 01-04-2007, 11:28 PM Its been a while, but I will have an update for you guys in a couple of weeks.
As far as pics of the rotisserie, It wasnt mine. I borrowed it from a friend. I can probably get some pics, but it may be a while.

bigdon-70blazer 01-16-2007, 08:29 AM Body rotisserie question again. Was that a good set up for you? Other words, would you recommend that set up or was it not worth the trouble? Also, was the whole set up bouncy and did the body stay strait and solid? I see you braced the doors, was that part ok? Sorry for so many questions but this is where I am now. Any pics still left that may show details of your set up? Thanks so much!

The set up worked pretty good. It was kind of a pain to get it all set up on there, but was worth it in the end. As far as being bouncy, no it wasnt. The body seems to have stayed straight. I have the doors on it now and they still fit. I would say that you definitely need to brace the door openings or leave the doors on. All in all its alot of work to put it on the rotisserie and take it off, but the end reslut is well worth it. The bottom of my tub looks better than it did new. And it should last forever.

bbarooo 01-18-2007, 02:40 PM I know I'm way behind in this post but what kind of gas door did you use. I get so hung up on things like that I never get anything done!
bagged74 01-18-2007, 07:56 PM mine is from williams street rods, it came from parr automotive in Oklahoma City. Hagan street rod parts has the same door.
You still have the blazer that you got from me?
bbarooo 01-22-2007, 08:41 PM I do still have it. I just use it as a parts runner for now. I am still collecting parts to make it nice. Someday. I picked up a clean, original, 70 jimmy that I'm having fun with until then.
Reading this makes me wish you had held on to the 72 just a liitle bit longer.
