My dial up goes off line after awhile of use (sbc yahoo) but the computer is too dumb to realize it , it just keeps trying to find the page. I have a LED light that indicates line usage and if I look at it when this happens the light is off. I have to manually disconnect the computer from the web to redial, can anyone help with this ???

yes, but only if you make sure and tell me what version of windows you're running and any other computer specs (like brand, model, is modem internal or external, etc)!

In internet Explorer, choose "Internet Options" from the Tools menu.

Click on the Connections tab.

Make sure "Always dial my default connection" is selected and make sure SBC Yahoo is setup as your default connection in the list, if not, then use the "set default" button to make SBC Yahoo the default.

If this does not help or you're already setup this way, let me know.

Yes the L.E.D. goes out (line disconnected ) computer doesn't know it's lost the connection , So I have to manually disconnect (clicking the little screens in the tray)and reconnect. The modum is listed under device manager as a Agere,but under modems it's listed as a Lucent win modem

Well, if there isn't, then do this: find it in the Device Manager window again. With the right-hand mouse button, right-click that sucker and choose "Properties". Inside that Properties window, you should have a bunch of tabs. One of those tabs will be "Diagnostics" - CLICK that tab. There should be a button on that tab that says QUERY MODEM. Click it. You should see something like the picture below - See the line with the AT+GMM on it? Conexant is my brand of modem, basically. I need to know the exact brand showing on yours along with any numbers listed.

Also - any news from SBC Yahoo on whether they have some software update you can install for your dialup connection?

Says "H.324 video ready Rev 1.0 " SBC help line is from India they only think in the box, any unusual problems they say you need a "NEW" disc with all the updates but is a year 2000 disc if you complain they'll tell you to use a different browser but believe it or not so far it is still the most reliable service I've been with, of course I don't pay but $15 a month. And DSL is out since I use the landladies 2nd. phone line (I sublet)

For reference, your modem is now called the "Agere Win Modem" and was formerly known as the "LT Win Modem" or "Lucent Win Modem".

It's got a very generic name and it uses a very generic main chip/chipset on it, which is where a lot of my confusion above came from.

basically these two characters :( are in the logfile back to back, and whenever you post those two characters side by side, the forum automatically inserts a sad face.

so, if you look five or six lines below, you will see the closing ")" that would have been on the other side of it.
