Alright, I have a dell comp with altec lansing 4 speaker/sub speakers, normally they rock. Over the last week though they are low, no thump, no volume! Every once in a while they will hit "normal" volume, and then go back to low volume. I have checked hookups, volume controls, itunes setting, it doesnt matter what I play it is still low compared to normal. Any help is appreciated.

is there any chance you have a different pair of speakers you can hook up to it to check it out? Also, do you have a different sound card you can experiment with? It's really hard to diagnose something like this from a distance.

okay, then try this.
MAKE A NOTE OF HOW THE SPEAKERS ARE HOOKED UP TO THE COMPUTER - what color wire goes to what color jack, etc. this is really important.
you got a Walkman, portable CD player, iPod or any other device with a headphone jack? take the speakers off the computer and hook them up to the walkman/whatever. see if you get the same muffled noise. this is the only way i know to troubleshoot if the speakers are causing the problem.
let it play for a good hour or two. jiggle the cord a little bit and see if you can get the speakers to muffle up like they're doing while attached to the computer. this should tell you if it's the speakers.
if you wouldn't mind, can you tell me what kind of computer you've got? if it's a major name brand, i would like the make and model of it. if it's a "built by somebody else" computer, if you can go into the "Device Manager" of Windows and tell me what sound card it's got in it, that would be great.
also, if you can take a picture of the back of the computer in decent light so i can tell what ports/jacks you got, that would be helpful.\
i'll try to help as best as i can, given the circumstances.
