View Full Version : the red x's
Jebb1978 06-16-2006, 11:48 PM Yesterday my home computer was fine. Today every site I go on has the red x's instead of icons and pictures? They are even all over this site????
Can you help me figure this out? Do I have another virus or something? I ran a virus check and it says it's all clear.
magnethead 06-17-2006, 02:57 AM may just be something with the server the images are hosted on? Tat or your connection was bogged.
I've noticed some pictures that wont show on my computer but others see then, and if i open the image in a new window by itself it shows fine.

Same here, but just on this site. Pics are working, but the icons/smileys are red x's.
Jebb1978 06-17-2006, 09:38 AM Hmm, as long as I didn't break anything I am okay! Thanks guys.
shifty 06-17-2006, 01:22 PM i've seen this happen a bazillion times.
it's really easier to troubleshoot with someone who has two internet browsers on their system - if it's doing it with both browsers, you know it's not a setting or problem with one of them, that it's something inside windows or your connection settings.
with regard to the smileys not showing up ... if you right-click the "red X" and choose "Properties", you can drag your mouse over the text for Address (URL), then right-click the selected text, choose "Copy", then press CTRL+V to paste it into a post. allowing others to see that URL is helpful in trying to diagnose your problem.
HuggerCST 06-17-2006, 06:53 PM Everything is ok now. ???

My wife says she isn't having problems with her profile? Is that what you mean by 2 seperate browsers? I can copy and paste the URL when I get home tonight if you don't mind giving me your impression? Thanks for the info Shifty!
magnethead 06-17-2006, 07:35 PM he means if you have 2 browsers. Like I have maxthon and IE7. My friend has IE7 and firefox. Navigator is another one.
Jebb1978 06-17-2006, 07:39 PM Hmm, I am not computer savy but I think that, I don't have that? My wife is the in house IT dept. She usually just fixes everything but she not too interested this time.
shifty 06-17-2006, 10:18 PM two options: a 'no software install' option and a 'go install software' option
no software install: log in as a different username on the computer and try browsing with that user and see if it still happens. if it doesn't, it's something particular to your account. you can setup a new user in the Control Panel if you only have one currently.
go install software: i would suggest installing Firefox (search that word in google, you'll get a link to download and install it). open Firefox and go to the same webpage and see if it happens. if it happens in IE but not FF, you know it's a problem with IE.
before you bother with any of the above, get me that link i asked for above so i can see if it's actually doing what its supposed to :D
Jebb1978 06-17-2006, 10:40 PM You got it boss. Here she is.
shifty 06-18-2006, 12:17 PM i don't have a problem seeing it.
does it work if you click this link?: http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/images/icons/icon6.gif
so, you're seeing a red X here?: http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/images/icons/icon6.gif
Jebb1978 06-18-2006, 11:05 PM No sir, that is a red x too.
shifty 06-19-2006, 11:01 PM please read this article from Microsoft support and tell me if it helps:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=283807
shifty 06-19-2006, 11:01 PM ps - some alternate options :
http://www.google.com/search?sourceid=navclient&ie=UTF-8&rls=GGLG,GGLG:2006-21,GGLG:en&q=%22red+x%22+internet+explorer
Jebb1978 06-20-2006, 10:01 PM I made sure that the "show pictures" was checked under my internet settings. I am going to pass it over to my better half with your linked info. I am afraid of screwing something up again. Thanks for the help Shifty, I will keep you updated.
Jebb1978 06-23-2006, 04:20 PM Thanks guys! We are back to normal. My wife read the info you gave me and then decided to try deleting all of my "temporary internet files" to see if that would help first. Worked like a charm, since I am the one who doesn't understand this stuff I didn't know how to delete them or even that they
were there. It won't happen again.
Shifty,
I really appreciate you finding all that info and linking it to the post for me. If you ever need anything at all from me, I sure won't forget it.
Thanks again to all,
Shawn
