View Full Version : Glock's official "Project 68" build thread
glock35ipsc 08-22-2007, 09:06 AM Busy, busy, busy!!
You are right Mike, it is from Hagen. Don't know what happened to the other pics, but here are a couple more.
glock35ipsc 08-22-2007, 11:47 AM A couple other things going on....
I am working on sectioning an old glove box door that will eventually be roughly the same dimensions as the gauge build-out. Maybe just a touch bigger, but at least close to the same proportions. And it will retain the same basic shape as the OEM door. I'm just waiting to see how it turns out before I commit to another hole in the dash.
Also, I have made a DRAMATIC change to the color. But for now, that will remain a secret
ColoradoK5 08-22-2007, 03:58 PM Looks great man great project!! That steering wheel is the same i have in my K5. i love all the little things you are doing. Looks like chevy should have done a few like the gas door!! Keep up the good work!! By the way Chevydude's frame came out great!!
glock35ipsc 08-23-2007, 10:09 AM I got a lot done on the glove box door last night. I started with an extra door that I have had in the shop attic for years. I wanted it to be roughly the same dimensions as the gauge build-out so the proportions of the dash wouldn't look off. I didn't want the full sized door on the opposite end of the smaller gauge panel.
I figured it should be around 5.5" tall and around 15" wide. So I laid out the cuts for the top of the box first, keeping in mind that I need to keep the push button latch. After I got them cut out I figured how much of the bottom I would need and cut them a touch wider. I tacked together the top pieces first, then found center, trimmed the lower left to fit and tacked it in place. Then trimmed up the lower right and tacked it.
Since the rear doesn't match up at all, and I don't need cup holders :) I cut the center out, which helped to be able to hammer & dolly the tacks. After the front is all welded, I will weld in a smooth piece to the back side.
The bottom pic is where I left off last night. I'll finish welding up the front tonight, then start on the back side.
glock35ipsc 08-23-2007, 10:12 AM A couple more pics. This is what the back side looks like right now after cutting the rest of the uneven/mismatching metal out. The second shows what is left of the old door. This should give you an idea of how much smaller the new one is. I think it's actually pretty cool! Kinda like I shrunk the original :metal:
68 short step 08-23-2007, 10:14 AM nice job
ColoradoK5 08-23-2007, 11:32 AM Looks good!
Your fuel filler cover looks exactly like the one I made. Awesome dash
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v623/pzimmerer/DSCN0628.jpg
glock35ipsc 08-23-2007, 12:19 PM Cool! Did you weld yours in? I was thinking of welding in some tabs to drill and tab, then attach the cover with stainless button head cap screws in case I ever needed to get in there to pull the hose or change out the o-ring on the filler cap.
I welded 3 tabs to the inside of it and just bolted it up to the side. It sits just barely off the outside of the bed. I ran some silicone sealant all around it. I could still take it off if I needed to, even though its a pain to get to those bolts.
glock35ipsc 08-23-2007, 04:30 PM Boy did I just have a crazy thought! I was sitting here thinking about if I ever drive this truck to the annual big board meet next year (getting ahead of myself, aren't I??), I won't really want to haul all my stuff in the bed. Then I remembered that I have a very nice, complete 68 front clip and a new tailgate, and how that could be morphed together into a trailer.
Think about it....... either the hood could open to get you stuff, or the tailgate could be opened...... or both. Maybe have a large compartment in front for "stuff", and a smaller one behind the tailgate for tools, parts, etc.....
Oh please, someone stop me!!!!!!
Thats got potential.
Id like to see how it would look
Frizzle Fry 08-23-2007, 04:39 PM Cool! Did you weld yours in? I was thinking of welding in some tabs to drill and tab, then attach the cover with stainless button head cap screws in case I ever needed to get in there to pull the hose or change out the o-ring on the filler cap.
I like the mini-door. You know, that filler tube comes out from the back by unscrewing the cap. So I don't see the need for access under that cover. My cover is fixed (the stock inner cover) and I can still get the tube/neck in/out no problem.
Frizzle Fry 08-23-2007, 05:01 PM old mspaint chop...
glock35ipsc 08-23-2007, 05:31 PM Did you just do that photochop??? That looks bad azz! Better than I thought it would!
Thanks for reminding me of the cap unscrewing, I've been having several geriatric moments this week :banghead:
Palf70Step 08-23-2007, 05:45 PM :agree: Frizzle, that is very kool!!
FRENCHBLUE72 08-23-2007, 06:31 PM Dang this build is really comming along..
67ChevyRedneck 08-23-2007, 08:07 PM old mspaint chop...
That is SOOOOOOO awesome.
You know you have to build one for the Tahoe now!
glock35ipsc 08-23-2007, 08:35 PM Maybe I didn't see it in a daydream,maybe I so it here long ago.......
glock35ipsc 08-23-2007, 08:38 PM Dang this build is really comming along..
It's amazing the kind of motivation you can get from going as far as listing your project for sale, then feeling sellers remorse about 5 minutes later!
Frizzle Fry 08-23-2007, 11:34 PM I did that chop a while ago but never posted it. I think you need to build it :metal:
glock35ipsc 08-27-2007, 10:32 AM Hmmm, if I can ever get this one done, I just might!!!
OK, didn't get much done this weekend. Saturday was Mama's birthday, and we went for a 250 mile motorcycle ride Sunday. By I did manage to get the glove box lid done Saturday, and started on a jig for the opening itself.
On the glove box lid, I needed to finish tacking the seams, and on the back I needed to weld in a flat piece where I cut all the uneven stuff out. Came out pretty good. I will need to skin the front with filler, but since this won't be a daily driver, I know I won't be opening and slamming it shut a lot. All that is going to be in there is probably the registration and insurance cards.
I figured I would build the glove box on the bench instead of screwing up the new dash. Once I have everything perfect on the bench (opening size and shape, hinge, stop arm, glove box size, shape, and attachment) then I can transfer everything to the dash. I can use this piece as a template.
Hart_Rod 08-27-2007, 10:48 AM Nice build Glock, can't wait to see it done. I'm in ABQ, NM maybe we can meet up sometie. I noticed you (and couple other guys on the board) have used the Hagan gas lid. I've got one in my 48 and it works really well. It is always a crowd pleaser when you show it to people. However, the way it is designed, it will hold fuel if it backflushes out the filler cap. I would suggest that you put a drain in it. Also, make sure your filler cap is hinged from the bottom. This also helps to keep the fuel in the filler hose and not on your truck. Don't ask me how I know, :). Take care.
Rob
glock35ipsc 08-27-2007, 10:54 AM Thanks for the tip Rod. I had thought about drilling a hole or two in the bottom of the cover, but never thought about the position of the hinge. I will note that on my to-do list!
Maybe all of us in this are can pick a central place to have a get-together sometime, maybe around the Denver area?
Hart_Rod 08-27-2007, 11:03 AM Thanks for the tip Rod. I had thought about drilling a hole or two in the bottom of the cover, but never thought about the position of the hinge. I will note that on my to-do list!

I would weld a piece of 5/16 brake line in so you can attach a rubber hose to it. If you don't, it may drip on stuff you don't want it to (don't ask me how I know, :(). I just happend to re-read the Hagan instructions the other day (what a novel thought, ehh) and it mentions putting the hinge on the bottom.
I'm batching it until next spring, so a lot of my weekend are free (unless we're drilling). A get together would be cool!
Lemield 08-27-2007, 11:08 AM That glovebox door is sweet Bob!
Looking good....you and Alex are making me feel bad...I have to work on the house and landscaping...I'd rather be working on my trucks! :(
glock35ipsc 08-27-2007, 11:32 AM Thanks Larry! Just be sure the wife is happy, then you have some ammo when it comes down to shop time!!
I was going back through some old pics of this truck, and for fun I thought I would post up some pics of what it first looked like when I first bought it, and a couple of the "cleaning up" process. Basically, I replaced the engine with a new 350 crate motor, changed out all the exterior chrome as EVERYTHING had been painted over, lowered it, front disc brakes, wheels and tires, and a new exhaust.

ColoradoK5 08-27-2007, 01:45 PM sweet color when does it get shot?
glock35ipsc 08-27-2007, 02:12 PM Thanks! All I can say right now is, hopefully before the end of the year! :haha:

Yer gonna flare the fenders
glock35ipsc 08-27-2007, 03:43 PM Oh god no! The color, it's the color man!
67ChevyRedneck 08-27-2007, 04:01 PM Is that the camaro concept convertible???
glock35ipsc 08-27-2007, 04:04 PM Almost forgot..... I have a new HVAC control coming from Hot Rod Air. This is a new style for them, and I think it will flow much better with the new gauge cluster then the oval one did. I wanted to get this, along with the two center vents and stereo cut out before painting the cab.

07 Vette, Atomic Orange. There is something like a pint of pearl in a gallon of base color!
Frizzle Fry 08-27-2007, 07:28 PM Oh god no! The color, it's the color man!
 Just messin ;) I LOVE that color!
68 short step 08-27-2007, 11:47 PM great color, love the orangeish(very technical, i know) colors on these trucks..
CMars45000 08-28-2007, 10:23 AM 07 Vette, Atomic Orange. There is something like a pint of pearl in a gallon of base color!
Ah...a man after my own heart...You love a TON of pearl in orange and blue hues. Sometimes a lot of pearl in the paint tends to mottle a bit more so application is more difficult then solid colors but I LOVE the end result...
The blue I am using for my 1971 SWB is actually a Honda S2000 Bermuda Blue Pearl that I took all of the yellow out and basically trippled the amount of pearl...
glock35ipsc 08-28-2007, 10:56 AM Hey Chris, haven't seen you on in a while! I have always been a die hard blue fan, but lately it seems everyone is painting theirs blue. Not that there is anything wrong with that, but I have done just enough subtle mods to this one that I am afraid it won't stand out around all the other blue trucks.
So I though I would go another route. I never ever thought I would like orange, but it was Mike Nutt's truck that changed my mind. So I set out to find an orange that agreed with me. I narrowed it down to a few, and this one won. I always seem to gravitate to the ones that are a little different when I go to shows or cruise nights, ones that jump out at me. So this one should "hopefully" have the same effect!
ChevyDude 08-28-2007, 01:28 PM Guys I have seen this color in person on Century Chevrolet's showroom floor...it was on a Z06...and I means ta tell ya....it is beautiful and will look AWESOME on Glocks truck!!! Great choice!!! Can't wait to see it wearing some ATOMIC ORANGE
glock35ipsc 08-28-2007, 01:30 PM I'm stoked Alex, really stoked!!!!!!
I've already thought up a little design to (maybe)have painted on one lower corner of the tailgate.......
An orange, with the top blown out, and a nuclear mushroom cloud rising up out of it. ATOMIC ORANGE! :metal:
That would be freakin' sweet man:metal: .........
ColoradoK5 08-28-2007, 01:59 PM that would be sweet! not 2 much just a little reminder!!
glock35ipsc 08-28-2007, 02:04 PM that would be sweet! not 2 much just a little reminder!!
Oh yeah, it would be no more than, oh, 4" tall? Maybe 6" at the very most.
ColoradoK5 08-28-2007, 02:09 PM You could put on the each tailgate! maybe oppisite sides! Truck & Trailer)
Angelse68cal 08-28-2007, 03:38 PM Where are you all gettin the Gas door conversions from?

killer71 08-28-2007, 03:57 PM where u gonna mount the ac control panel?
glock35ipsc 08-28-2007, 04:22 PM Thats something I have been arguing with myself about for awhile now (don't ask, I can get into pretty heated arguments with myself some times!)
Anywho, I have two round vents that I originally was going to use on the ends of the dash, but I won one of the arguments and decided to use the OEM round vents instead. I had already bought the smaller round ball vents but forgot I had them until a couple of days ago.
I was also going to use the oval control panel from Vintage Air, but recently got some information in the mail from Hot Rod Air. I called to see about one of their billet oval panels and found out they had a new one; three knobs that are inline, and has ball milled grooves. They emailed me a picture of it yesterday morning (the one posted above), and I immediately called to order one. It is such a great match to the gauge bezel.
So, here is a quick and dirty Power Point drawing of how the center of the dash will look.
For now, I might get into another argument with myself.......
killer71 08-28-2007, 05:24 PM No ashtray?
glock35ipsc 08-28-2007, 05:33 PM No need for one..... I kinda sometimes smoke, mostly when I am working in the shop, but I never smoke in the house or any of my vehicles.
killer71 08-28-2007, 05:38 PM hmm...you payin attention 68 ss?
glock35ipsc 08-28-2007, 05:59 PM If I had more time (which I do) and really wanted to do it (which I don't), I would make build-outs (like I did for the gauges) for the A/C vents, HVAC control, and stereo. But that is a lot of work, and I don't want to keep pushing this thing any farther behind.
This is the third attempt at doing something different to the dash. It started with cutting out the center and welding in a smooth piece. I didn't like the end result, and about a year later I cut it out. I then welded in a piece that made the dash smooth all the way across, and would use the stock gauges and glove box. It looked alright, but I still wanted something different. So this is the end result, and I really like this one.
glock35ipsc 09-07-2007, 09:37 AM Well, the dash is starting to take shape. I got the billet A/C control panel yesterday, so I laid out the center section pieces on some template paper and got everything cut out. I left room at the bottom for the two pop-out cup holders that will come later on down the road.
The glove box door is basically done as well. I just need to work a little more on figuring out the opening size and shape, get the hinge tweaked, and figure out bracing for the back side of the dash. The bracing will not only stabilize everything, but provide the means for attaching the hinge, the latch, and the eventual glove box compartment that will be made after the A/C is installed.
Also had a little help last night, even though Momma thought he was sound asleep in his spider web!
glock35ipsc 09-07-2007, 09:39 AM A couple more of the dash, and the finished glove box door.
Something else I finally got done was to drill and tap the back side of the gauge bezel so that it can now be attached to the dash. No more fear of it falling out! I know, it probably should be safely stored in it's box, but it just looks too darn cool in the dash to have it hiding out in it's box!
glock35ipsc 09-07-2007, 10:17 AM Next up is figuring out where to mount the headlight switch, the wiper switch and the ignition. I have several ideas shown below, but I just can't make up my mind.
I can either mount the lights and the wipers side-by-side to the left of the column, low on the dash, with the ignition in an equal location to the right of the column.
Or I can put the lights on the left side of the gauges, the wipers on the right side, and the ignition down low (the purple circle in the pic below). That leaves me with the decision of having the switches just above center of the gauges (green), inline with them (blue), just below center (yellow), or directly under the outermost gauges (red).
 I think I am making this part more complicated than it needs to be, but I don't want things to look cluttered, or look like an afterthought as if they were thrown on there wherever they would fit.
At this point, I'm leaning towards under the outer gauges (red circles), with the ignition in the spot shown (purple). That would help fill the big open area on either side of the column. Thoughts, ideas, suggestions????
Stoney 09-07-2007, 10:29 AM Cig Lighter for Cell Phone......Too
glock35ipsc 09-07-2007, 10:34 AM Cig Lighter for Cell Phone......Too
Dang, how could I forget that?!?! OK, so maybe the ignition on the left of the column, and the 12v outlet on the right....... That would balance everything out nicely. Or, I could mount the 12v outlet inside the glove box, hidden and out of the way.
Lemield 09-07-2007, 10:46 AM Looking great Bob!
You do nice work!
I think you may have inspired me to put some custom gauges in my little green CST...
glock35ipsc 09-07-2007, 10:51 AM I think a nice set of gauges would look great in that truck!
Frizzle Fry 09-07-2007, 11:33 AM That dash is looking soooooo classy! What are you doing for seats? If you'll have buckets and a console you could put the cig lighter in the console. Maybe even the ign sw? That would keep your dash clean.
I was thinking on my 61 I might try to put the wiper and lights switches on the column. There are aftermarket switches available that are made to go on the turn signal, tilt, or shift levers.
Otherwise I like the red position or halfway between red and yellow, even with the outside of the outer gauges. Just to make your decision that much more complicated ;)
Stoney 09-07-2007, 11:34 AM Could use a colum out of a Later model with all that on it to conserve space.
glock35ipsc 09-07-2007, 12:06 PM Thanks for the help Mike!!!! But I do agree, the more I stare at it, the more I am leaning on the lower corners as the best spot.
I haven't really made up my mind on the seat yet. Since I plan on cruising the kiddos around with me, I will definitely have a bench of some sort, either the original, or a 60/40, or a 40/20/40. I actually like the original, it had been rebuilt just before I bought the truck so the foam is new, but I would have a new cover made for it. Or, I would like to find a late 80's bench, or a late 80's/early 90's 60/40 split bench.
ColoradoK5 09-07-2007, 01:24 PM that dash is coming around!! Just keep in mind for the ignition switch that the keys\keychain will swing and scratch up the paint. you could always use a single key? Lower corners would be good!:metal:
glock35ipsc 09-07-2007, 01:37 PM that dash is coming around!! Just keep in mind for the ignition switch that the keys\keychain will swing and scratch up the paint. you could always use a single key? Lower corners would be good!:metal:
Yup! That's exactly why I decided to keep it low. I had thought about using an ignition from Ron Francis, but came back around to the OEM style. I will still use Ron Francis headlight and wiper switches. I'm going to use the 67 bezel so that I can mount it on the flat surface. I have already modified the spacer on the lathe so that it sits flat on the backside, and allows enough room for the bezel to screw on far enough (picture below). I have a couple idea for the backside of the dash to keep the spacer from turning when turning the key.
So a new set of matched ignition/door locks will be in order.
Also, I had thought about doing clear film on the lower part of the truck when done. I have to travel 3 miles of gravel road round trip to see pavement, so I had the idea of doing a little piece of the clear film around the ignition area to.
Headlight and wiper switches:

Here is what I did to the ignition. You can't see it in the second pic, but the spacer sits flat on the cardboard.
glock35ipsc 09-07-2007, 05:33 PM Hmmm, yeah, I think I like the new look better that what I had going on before!
FRENCHBLUE72 09-07-2007, 07:37 PM Try this out???? Mount em on a pannel here it might be awkward at 1st but I am sure it will clean up the dash ...Mount the pannel horizontal to the dash am I makein sence or :fb:
glock35ipsc 09-07-2007, 08:55 PM Hmm, that does give me an idea! I still need to weld in the piece under the dash to fill in were I cut the center out. I could make a piece that gently curves down then back up and mount them something like:
Lights - Ignition - Wipers
Thanks! I kinda like that!
msgross 09-08-2007, 08:04 AM Is the center section going to have any contours like the bezel or is it staying flat?
glock35ipsc 09-08-2007, 11:47 AM Mike, if you are talking about where it radio and all that is, it will stay flat. Actually, the my original intentions were to have everything flat to the dash, but since I couldn't see the upper numbers on the speedo when it was flat to the dash, that's what led me to make the angled build-out for the gauges.
msgross 09-08-2007, 01:27 PM I like the angled parts since it keeps the dash from looking like a large piece of sheetmetal. I know that your far from done on it but it's looking good.
glock35ipsc 09-08-2007, 01:51 PM I had though about making build-outs for the radio and A/C controller, and making build-outs for the two vents that angle them slightly to each side. It's not totally out of the question yet, but it's a lot of work to make those.
I've been thinking of different options for the glove box door too. I'm looking at other doors that might have a unique shape, like a 61 Corvair Monza door. corn also posted a pic in another thread I started of an Impala door that is steel, but has "grooves" in it like ball milled grooves in aluminum. I think I could make a similar door from a piece of billet and do the ball milled grooves. Laying in bed last night, I though "why couldn't I make the door thicker at the bottom than the top? That would fit right in with the angled gauges..... I have a mill, so I'm not sure why I couldn't at least try it.
manimal 09-08-2007, 03:44 PM Why not use a later model column with the ignition switch, wiper controls in the column? That would kill two birds with one stone! Just a thought........
-Lance
BTW this is looking GREAT!
glock35ipsc 09-08-2007, 05:29 PM I have thought about it, but a couple of things keep coming back to me:
- I like the simplicity of the van column, and I will be using billet handles/knobs on it, so I would like to keep those as clean as possible.
- The light and wiper switches are real nice billet pieces from Ron Francis, and have a color matching band around them. I think they would look pretty cool sticking out of the dash. Right now it's just a matter of where they will stick out!
Thanks for the suggestion thought! I'm always open for new ideas for this truck.
Frizzle Fry 09-08-2007, 06:50 PM How bout installing "The Clapper"
