View Full Version : Glock and HuggerCST's official "Project 68" build thread
glock35ipsc 06-20-2006, 11:12 AM I thought I had better just start one thread and continue it instead of making a new one here and there when something got done. So, here it is. I will update this one as any progress is made. :metal:
So, to start the progress report, I got the engine and trans set in place last night. :two: It is just temporary though, as I forgot to get flexplate bolts! :banghead:
I mainly wanted to get them in so I could start building the exhaust system. I need to bolt up the starter, trans cooler lines, and anything else that could get in the way so I can build around them. I am thinking that I might use a Lokar shifter cable linkage setup, that will let me run the exhaust completely above the bottom of the frame.
That's all for now. I might put the bed together so I can set it on the frame to build the back part of the system. Oh yeah, that Flexfan is going away!! Have a factory fan to replace it with.

ChevyDude 06-20-2006, 11:32 AM Fantastic!!! I'm sure you will have an awesome ride when you finish!!! Keep the pics a coming!!!
matthufham 06-20-2006, 11:37 AM nice! keep on going
glock35ipsc 06-20-2006, 11:44 AM Ya know, it's kinda funny...... I've had the rolling chassis basically done for over a year and a half now, and it's been sitting in my other garage under a tarp. Then, one day, I get my shop cleaned out and think "I have room to move the chassis up here now", and I've had a full head of steam ever since!! I don't want to get ahead of myself here, but if I can keep the momentum up.......
Naw, I don't want to jinx myself!
matthufham 06-20-2006, 04:08 PM are you sticking with the ram horns?
glock35ipsc 06-20-2006, 04:15 PM I am keeping them. I'm going to smooth out the casting marks and grind off the bumps, then they are getting ceramic coated.
powell72 06-20-2006, 04:18 PM You're going to run yourself out of work on that frame and then have to get back to work on that cab you know!
glock35ipsc 06-20-2006, 04:31 PM I know, don't remind me!! I know eventually I will have to get back on the cab, and the way things are going on the frame right now, that may be sooner than later! Oh well, at least at that point I will know I have to get the cab finished if I ever want to drive this thing again.
But, I think things will progress very quickly once the cab is done. Once that is done, it's just a matter of fit, adjust, paint, and reassemble. :metal:
Joe67 06-21-2006, 07:29 AM Looks great! I bookmarked this thread
glock35ipsc 06-21-2006, 09:15 AM Cool Joe! Here's some more pics for ya then!
Last night I mocked up the exhaust on the drivers side. I had to redo it a couple of times where it runs over the axle, but I think I have it where I want it now. From there it runs outside the frame since I will have a gas tank in the rear. My wife and I both jumped up and down on the back of the frame and it never touched the axle (the shocks are not on right now either). The thing I like about it is that there will only be a couple of bends in the system. And, there is absolutely nothing visable under the frame. I like it!! :metal: I also decided to use Lokars cable shifter linkage to gain some clearance, so I could then run the pipe right through the area where all the linkage stuff was.
I am using 2-1/2" aluminized pipe along with welded mufflers from Summit. My buddy has them on his Mustang and I really like the sound of them, real throaty, and kind of like a Flowmaster but without the hollow/echo/cackly sound of the FLowmaster. Hmm, guess it sounds nothing like a Flowmaster then, huh? LOL! I am debating now whether to do the passenger side, or weld up the drivers side. I think I will do the passenger side next, and try to make it as exact as possible to the drivers side, then weld everything up.

Joe67 06-21-2006, 09:33 AM I like that exhaust setup. I think I need to put holes in my crossmember for sure now.
Are you going to have any clearance issues with your exhaust running over the rear axle like that?
glock35ipsc 06-21-2006, 09:39 AM It's not as close as the pics make it look. I don't have the rear shocks on yet, just the coil springs, so the wife and I jumped up and down on the rear of the frame and we could not get it to hit the axle. If I ever decide to go lower, I may run into clearance issues then. But, if I hit enought holes and bumps, it may just 'correct' itself!
Joe67 06-21-2006, 09:41 AM It's not as close as the pics make it look. mike nutt 06-21-2006, 11:37 AM looking good. keep us posted on your progress.
glock35ipsc 06-22-2006, 08:20 AM Hmmmm, anyone see a problem with the exhaust in this pic?
http://usera.imagecave.com/glock35ipsc/TRUCK/P1010043.JPG
It just jumped out at me this morning as I was loading my TIG welder cylinder.... I ran the tube right square under where the upper shock mount needs to go!! OOPS!!!! :banghead: Bummer, I guess I need to install the upper brackets and the shocks, then order a couple more u-bends and route it around it.
Didn't do anything last night except for fall asleep on the couch at about 8:30!
Joe67 06-22-2006, 08:35 AM Oops
Here is what Stacey did on Copperhead :D

glock35ipsc 06-22-2006, 08:56 AM Hmm, I wonder how they exit?

I'm thinking of dumping my exits or going out the side somehow...
I just found this website! Great pics of the buildup!!
http://www.paintucation.com/copperhead.htm
glock35ipsc 06-22-2006, 09:36 AM I like it! I guess I could do that if I went with a Fuelcellguy tank, then I could just cut the front corners like that and weld them back angled. Hmmmm.....
Joe67 06-22-2006, 09:40 AM The Copperhead tank is a modified 'Copperhead style' Early Classic tank :D
Alvin 06-22-2006, 11:57 AM I like it! I guess I could do that if I went with a Fuelcellguy tank, then I could just cut the front corners like that and weld them back angled. Hmmmm.....
If you go with a Fuelcellguy tank, you can get it made that way to save you the hassle! :metal:
Great looking truck by the way. And is it just me or does there seem to be a lot of us building chassis at this point? :c2:
glock35ipsc 06-22-2006, 01:36 PM Leave it to me to overlook the obvious! :banghead:
Your right, there are a lot of in-the-works chassis happening right now!
glock35ipsc 06-23-2006, 11:27 PM OK, got the exhaust fixed. The front stayed the same from the manifold to the trailing arm crossmember. The rear is basically the same setup, but routed differently. This time, I mounted the upper shock bracket and shock before tacking pieces in place (what a concept!). I was able to use all of the pieces from the first try, and only had to make one new one.
I have already fully welded it except for one joint right behind the crossmember. I need to pull it out, finish bending and welding the hangers, then I will be painting the systen with aluminum high temp paint on the inside, and flat black where it runs outside the frame in the rear.
Turning past the panhard bar mount on the outside of the frame

The extra hole on the hanger will be cut off, and the round bar will be heated and bent around the pipe and tacked in a few places. I have three of these on each side

Slammed66 06-24-2006, 12:46 AM Looks great , glad to see you workin on it again.!
One note on the muffler placement , I have them in the same place on my 64 , It creates alot of heat in the cab., and mine resonates like crazy ( flowmasters , you should need to worry about it)
Im in the process of moving them back to right onfront of the diff .
you might wanna thin about a heat sheild,
phlegm 06-24-2006, 01:12 AM I would like to say from all of us with no time, space, money and tools.....
U suck....
just kidding, doing something like this is my dream, keep up the good work.

Looks good
FRENCHBLUE72 06-24-2006, 07:47 AM Looks great keep up the hard work....
glock35ipsc 06-27-2006, 10:22 AM you might wanna thin about a heat sheild,
Actually, I have, LOL! These mufflers are fairly quiet, I put some on my Dad's truck over the weekend, and while they sound really good out of the tip, they are actually pretty quiet right at the muffler. They are Summit, their own brand of welded muffler.
I bought some similar to these off of EvilBay:

glock35ipsc 06-27-2006, 10:26 PM OK, last pics of the exhaust! I'm sure everyone is getting tired of seeing exhaust pictures!
I now have both sides done, just need to bend the hangers over and tack weld, the remove and paint, and reinstall. Now comes the part I have NOT looking forward to..... finishing the body work on the cab :barf:

glock35ipsc 07-03-2006, 10:57 PM Update here:
http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/showthread.php?p=1747976#post1747976
glock35ipsc 07-12-2006, 08:27 AM Well, I got the inner fenders installed last night. The passenger side fits real nice, but I will need to open up the holes going around the fender on the driver side. Other than that, they sorta fell in place.
Also worked on the grill. Nothing real drastic. Anyone who knows these trucks should immediately notice the changes. But the average Joe, I doubt, will ever notice the changes.
The last pic shows some of the small parts I have powdercoated with a chrome powder. Now that I have the old oven set up in the shop, I can get some larger parts done now.
Also decided that I will not use the cowl hood (hint, hint, it's now for sale or trade!). I decided to go back to a stock hood. Anyone one know where I can find a nice one? I really hate to use the one off of my pristine 68 K10 front clip.
Joe67 07-12-2006, 08:37 AM Nice :D
Do you plan to paint the truck assembled or dis-assembled?
Looks like you did away with the bowtie emblem holes? Is there more?
67ChevyRedneck 07-12-2006, 08:40 AM Also worked on the grill. Nothing real drastic. Anyone who knows these trucks should immediately notice the changes. But the average Joe, I doubt, will ever notice the changes.
.
You used an "upper" removeable grill piece (what the heck are these pieces called:confused: ) to replace the lower one that had the turn signal ridge thingys. I thought about this myself, but with my new fog light front bumper, I didn't know where to put the turn signals. You also removed the bumpouts and holes for the bowtie at the center of the grill. One of them things that would go unnoticed, but just look great!
What are you going to do for front turn signals? 71-72 front bumper?
Looks great so far!

Yeah, what he said! Not sure what the "proper" name for them are either.
What are you going to do for front turn signals? 71-72 front bumper?
I will do that, plus use clear lenses with the amber bulbs. I thought about using a 67-70 bumper and cut some funky shape in it and mount turn signals behind the holes, but the cost to re-chrome it ruled that out.
Do you plan to paint the truck assembled or dis-assembled?
I will completely disassemble it. I put it all together so I could fit everything just right, adjust any holes that needed opened up, and fix body lines and gaps.
That, and I just wanted to see my truck back together after a year and a half of just being a frame!!!!

Oh yeah, nice eye. I've seen that done a few times now.
I was thinking the same thing you did. I kind of like the lamps there. The ambers do look good with the chrome trim, then again you could always get clear lenses...
glock35ipsc 07-12-2006, 09:08 AM I have the clear lenses for the stock lights. I am also going to paint the original lower section......just in case I decide that I don't like that look, then I can put the other insert back in and swap bumpers.
67chevemall 07-12-2006, 09:21 AM Also worked on the grill. Nothing real drastic. Anyone who knows these trucks should immediately notice the changes. But the average Joe, I doubt, will ever notice the changes.
The PO I bought my truck from did that change. I am just changeing it back.
A great guy on here sent me a OEM bottom piece for free!
I bought the clear lens and want to put them in the right way.
I had drilled out some holes in the bottom one and put the orange ones in there. But now I'm doing it the right way. Can't wait to see it with the clear lens.
Here is a pic of the old set up
SactoJim 07-12-2006, 10:28 AM Glock - looks great and I think it will look best without the cowl. Although I love the cowl hoods, the look best at home on the camaro and for some reason they just don't look like they quite belong on 67-72 trucks....just my opinion.
By the way, your plane ticket to Northern California is in the mail, fridge is full of cold ones and the mig is warmed up and ready for you (to do my exhaust please)!!!
glock35ipsc 07-12-2006, 10:39 AM SactoJim - I agree about the hood. Funny you mention coming out there! I was just through Sacramento about a month ago. Me and a buddy took a road trip to Ripon. He bought a WWII halftrack from a cop there. We left work on a Friday afternoon about 5PM, drove straight through and got to Sacramento about 10:30 Saturday morning. Went on to Ripan and loaded the halftrack and drove back to Wendover, Nevada and stayed Saturday night there. Got up early Sunday and went the rest of the way home. WHEW, I was pooped!!!!
I did really like the Sierras...... I wonder if I could talk the wife into a trip.....
SactoJim 07-12-2006, 01:34 PM I could've used that halftrack to better deal with traffic in the Sacto area! That's alot of miles to travel to the exciting town of Ripon (I used to date a girl that lived in that area). Your buddy restoring that halftrack or are you gonna use it to build the ultimate 67-72?
Yeah, those Sierras are beautiful and we go up as much as possible, if fact we are going up this weekend to see a concert in South Lake Tahoe. I grew up in the Omaha area and have been here +20 years and still have to pinch myself when we go up there.....truly God's country.
Of course, Colorado surely is beautiful in it's own right.
glock35ipsc 07-12-2006, 01:54 PM He's going to restore it. He does WWII reinactments, and has built and sold a few, but this one he says he will keep (yeah, right!). We have built 3 semi-auto 1919A4 Browning machine guns and 1 semi-auto M2HB machine gun for this truck. They are all set up to fire blanks, or can be changed out to fire live ammo. Needless to say, they are fun!
glock35ipsc 07-15-2006, 05:46 PM I did a little work on the interior today. I've been needing to finishing cutting the dash for the A/C vent, stereo, and HVAC control panel. The two rectangles below and to either side of the HVAC are spots marked out for the two billet cup holders that have yet to have been ordered.
Also met two more board members today. ChevyDude and Lemield came up this morning. Alex and I did some swapping of parts. Also, another board member, Uncle, bought a truck from my Dad Thursday, so he was here til about 10pm that night. Good to meet everyone!!!
glock35ipsc 07-16-2006, 12:32 AM Here are the billet cupholders I will be using.

ChevyDude 07-16-2006, 03:11 AM Whoa...them are nice!!!! Good times...meeting you too....Brice was really quite the young man......I think you better get another 68' for him!
glock35ipsc 07-16-2006, 10:25 AM Actually, if you ask him, that is "his hot rod truck"! He says I better have the other 68 (the K10) done before he starts driving!
ChevyDude 07-16-2006, 11:01 AM Well, who's ever truck it turns out to be, it's going to be a super looking ride. The more I think about it....Bob......baby blue with a white top....ummm uumm ummmmm!!!!
glock35ipsc 07-16-2006, 11:09 AM I'm starting to agree! Even Bryce likes the idea now, and he would always get mad at me if I suggested any other color than the dark blue. So if I have him convinced, then I think the decision has been made :D
yote1234 07-16-2006, 11:17 AM nice,nice,nice,nice,nice,nice..well you get the idea! very nice!
ChevyDude 07-16-2006, 11:44 AM I'm starting to agree! Even Bryce likes the idea now, and he would always get mad at me if I suggested any other color than the dark blue. So if I have him convinced, then I think the decision has been made :D
Good job Bryce!!! Baby Blue with a white top...gonna be a timeless looker!!! Hey Bryce.....you darn sure have one heck of a nice looking "Hot Rod Truck", buddy! It sure was nice meeting you and your Dad!!!
ChevyDude 07-16-2006, 12:06 PM Is this the same pic you showed us yesterday? Nice truck on Ebay...baby blue with a white top. Of course, yours will be better, no missing trim...but the color combo is sweet!
glock35ipsc 07-16-2006, 01:14 PM Here is the pic I showed you yesterday. It's kinda funny, the more I look at this picture, the more I feel like a teenage boy looking at a poster of some super model and thinking of all the ways I could have fun with her!!

ChevyDude 07-16-2006, 01:16 PM I'm drooling too! You get yours looking better than the one above and you may have a super model jumpin' in for a ride!!!
I can't believe I've missed this thread somehow! Great looking job you're doing, love the way you're doing everything yourself. Just another reason this place is better than the mags, where it's always "this shop did this and that shop did that and the owner put this emblem on all by himself!"
glock35ipsc 07-16-2006, 06:08 PM Don't worry Krue, I'll keep bumping it up often!
I finally finished that stubborn right cab corner that I started last month. It did not match the curve of the door below the body line, so it needed tweeked!
Using Rokcrln's suggestion of cutting slits in the inside lip to get the shape back, I had done that and got the curve right. BUT, I was left with a good gap at the body line, and about a 1/2" gap at the bottom of the door. Using another of Kevin's tricks, I tacked TIG wire to take up the gap. I then cut a piece of sheet metal to use as a filler on the inside of the jam to fill the space in there.
Turned out pretty good. At least everythig lines up now, and no more gaptosis!
Before, the problem:

After the slits:

68w/sbc406 07-16-2006, 06:39 PM i need to take a trip to Northern Colorado for a while with my truck, got any room???
Nice progress, your boy has a nice looking truck.
72CSTC5 07-16-2006, 09:05 PM Yep, thats what you have to do sometimes with this aftermarket junk. Most of the time I just make my own patch panels. Less fustration that way but it does help if the entire corner was rotted out.
powell72 07-16-2006, 11:26 PM Bob, I saw what you were dealing with and now the finished product and you make it look so easy!
glock35ipsc 07-16-2006, 11:36 PM Bob, I saw what you were dealing with and now the finished product and you make it look so easy!
Thanks! Nothing a half a spool of wire, a good grinder and 4 hours won't fix!
Joe67 07-17-2006, 08:41 AM Love the progress
What are the specs on those cup holders?
Lemield 07-17-2006, 08:44 AM I did a little work on the interior today. I've been needing to finishing cutting the dash for the A/C vent, stereo, and HVAC control panel. Bob,
I certainly enjoyed visiting with you and your kids. Bryce is quite the well spoken little fellow. I liked him immediately...since his first words to me were 'Wow...that's a nice truck!' :)
glock35ipsc 07-17-2006, 09:37 AM What are the specs on those cup holders?
To start with, they aren't cheap! But, they are exactly what I wanted to use before I even knew they existed! Here is a link:
http://www.rbsauto.com/product.asp?Product_id=176971
Larry - I was great to meet you too! I'm kinda proud of that kid, he gets the 5-6 year old streak going once in a while, but he is usually the little gentleman! And one thing he loves alot... these trucks!! He hasn't quite figured out the 71-72's yet, sort knows the 69-70's because of "Goldie", but he can spot a 67-68 front end clear across town! Good kid, he's alot of fun!
BigSky71 07-17-2006, 02:32 PM I know, don't remind me!! I know eventually I will have to get back on the cab, and the way things are going on the frame right now, that may be sooner than later! Oh well, at least at that point I will know I have to get the cab finished if I ever want to drive this thing again.
That is exactly where I am at, frame is done, cab half done but progressing. I need to get my cab in paint while I can still paint in my outdoor "paintbooth". The window of good weather for painting in an uncontrolled environment closes in Montana at the end of August, must stay focused!
Joe67 07-17-2006, 02:38 PM To start with, they aren't cheap! But, they are exactly what I wanted to use before I even knew they existed! Here is a link:

Very cool - thanks for that link :D
glock35ipsc 07-18-2006, 01:30 PM Yep, thats what you have to do sometimes with this aftermarket junk. Most of the time I just make my own patch panels. Less fustration that way but it does help if the entire corner was rotted out.
I hear ya! The other side wasn't bad at all, only had to cut out the lower 2" or so. This side was worse, not just rust, but it has been dented and the PO filled it full of holes to use a screw-in slide hammer, so I felt it would be better to just cut it all out and replace the whole corner.
Well, the decision on the hood is final! I sold the cowl hood this weekend, and just today picked up a nice used stock hood for a local hot rod shop I used to work for. I'll take it and some other parts to the sandblaster this week, then it's back to work!
jimmy68c10 07-18-2006, 08:30 PM Progress is looking good. Keep it up I'm getting alot of good info and ideas from this.:metal:

glock35ipsc 07-21-2006, 08:10 AM Didn't get much done this week except for the two side A/C vents. Cut the holes and installed the new vents just last night. I'm getting reeeeeeeal close to pulling everything back apart, except for the bed. Still haven't started on the fuel filler. And that's the whole reason I assembled the truck???
67ChevyRedneck 07-21-2006, 08:23 AM Here is the pic I showed you yesterday. It's kinda funny, the more I look at this picture, the more I feel like a teenage boy looking at a poster of some super model and thinking of all the ways I could have fun with her!!
My girlfriend of almost 3 years says she'll never have to worry about me cheating on her... I'd be more likely to leaver her for a truck:lol: She doesn't have to worry anyway;)
Progress looks great. If you keep this pace up, you might be done before me!
