View Full Version : Ran 11.44 @117.69mph
409biscayne 08-17-2006, 12:36 AM I have a big race coming up on the 26th, so time to get back to work. Are you all ready to run once your trailer is done?
Bar looks good , very well thought out . Just curious , what / where is your big race ? I always like to hear about other people's racing .
Later ............................... 409 :)
bigjimzlll 08-17-2006, 06:52 AM Well, The converter was perfect. I had them tighten it up 300 rpm. Should be at 5800 rpm now. The tranny is still at the shop. We found one of the cooler lines (braided AN) was laying on a header. I kind of wish they had found something wrong with the converter.

It's in Saskatoon Sask. it's SIR's 40th anniversary race. It was suppose to be couple months ago but got rained out, now they are pairing it up with the alcohol funny car shootout. Even the Fri. night street drags the night before will be packed.

Hope you get her done, nothing worse than spending all week under the truck and then not making it to the race.
71Dragtruck 08-17-2006, 11:37 AM Few pics from the weekend.
71Dragtruck 08-17-2006, 11:43 AM More.

bigjimzlll 08-17-2006, 06:22 PM Great shots...Have you tried stiff side wall slicks? I think they would sure help...would help reaction times for sure.

Nope never have, allways ran a DOT legal tire for the little bit I drive it on the street. I've thought about trying a pair of M/T drag radials, but never have. Could allways try some tubes in the tires I have.
bigjimzlll 08-17-2006, 10:02 PM heres one from this last weekend

Could allways try some tubes in the tires I have.71, I can tell ya what kind of luck I had with the drag radials. I tried a pair of the M/T 295/65 radials and they wouldn't hook for $#!+ ! As a matter of fact, during one launch, it spun the tires so violently that when I hit 2nd, I broke the intermediate sprag in the trans. Up until that point I hadn't had any trouble with the trans. I played with different air pressures and even talked to some buddies that run them on their 5-second 1/8 mi. cars. Some of these guys are runnin' 5.50's in the 1/8 on these things. I'd have been lucky to get in the 6's with them. I ended up going back to the M/T 31 x 14.5 ET Street and back came the consistancy and the hook. Just my experiences, for what it's worth.
BTW, nice pics of the GMC!!
bigjimzlll 08-17-2006, 10:47 PM I run the 32x 17.50 MT ET streets and they hook OK
djracer 08-17-2006, 11:07 PM I've been running 33x10.5w Mickey Slicks

Pretty much what I thought, I never had enough faith in them to buy a pair. The Hoosier Q/T Pro's is what I've run the last 2 years, as you can see they hook, might try some tubes to stiffen the sidewalls, you guy's run tubes in yours?
nxtruck 08-18-2006, 11:41 AM I run tubes in mine. Just some cheap $9.00/ tube tire store specials, not the natural rubber expensive deals. I've never had any trouble with them, and the tires don't loose any air, even after sitting for a while.
bigjimzlll 08-18-2006, 04:00 PM I run the pricy MT tubes
djracer 08-19-2006, 02:34 AM Tubeless for me with bolt in stems!
I have been at the track playing today! I can't run 6.00 with the convertor that's in it right now so I'm running on the motor in the 7.00 class! I made 1 all out 1/8 mile pass went 6.665! I switched to shifting on time instead of rpm and went 6.961 @100 mph! My first qualifying pass was a 7.008! I wasn't happy with my lights (.4 Pro tree) so I made a couple of changes and dep staged and went .407 on the tree and 6.966!
Wish me Luck I have some stiff Competition tomorrow!
djracer 08-20-2006, 11:01 PM Well I went out third round some ahole decided I needed him to line me up on the starting line and screwed up my concentration and I forgot to put it in first gear so of couse the trans brake didn't work! I helped some guys from Texas with a nice 10.5 outlaw car ( I'm the one in the purple hoosier shirt on the starting line) and I'm posting some other nice pics even one furd!
71Dragtruck 08-20-2006, 11:14 PM Looking good, too bad about the dip that thought you needed a pit crew all of a sudden, should have ran him over. Was it cold out, I see you warming your ears? I take it that the Furd with the Bowtie in the grill was running chevy power. You get your trailer all set up? post up some pics of it when you get a chance.
Monty.
djracer 08-20-2006, 11:32 PM I'm getting the trailer setup but it will take a while to do it all! (roof air, Aluminum cabinets, awning) I will try to take a couple of pics tomorrow!
bigjimzlll 08-21-2006, 07:10 AM I did the exact thing in the finals a few weeks again...second gear...DOH
djracer 08-21-2006, 12:10 PM Here's another pic I found!
djracer 08-21-2006, 10:17 PM here's my new Guard Dog!
djracer 08-21-2006, 10:25 PM Finally took some pics!
71Dragtruck 08-21-2006, 11:59 PM Nice! Here's one my wife snapped of my tow rig.
djracer 08-22-2006, 10:48 AM Black looks real sexy but its too hot here for that!
71Dragtruck 08-22-2006, 01:34 PM You got that right, they had a clearance sale, and it was the only one left, I was driving a white truck at the time.
djracer 08-22-2006, 02:03 PM I prefer white but I didn't want a white trailer this time! I plan to paint the ford silver up to the upper body line!
57sailplane 08-27-2006, 12:02 AM planning on custom dash. do you guys think i will have any problems with racing with a cluster set up like this. is the tach to low, i know most guys run theres on the top of the dash but would like to keep it clean. i probably will run the shift light up on the roll cage. if you guys have any suggestions let me know...
djracer 08-27-2006, 12:20 AM Why not put them in the stock location!
bigjimzlll 08-27-2006, 01:19 AM I have some of my gauges mounted there. It is quite difficult to read them and drive. You have to look away..then focus on each gauge...then look up...then start over again. It really dosent matter where the tach is...as long as the shift light is in a good place.
On aside note...I stunk it up at the races today. First round runner up...had an .15 light.....gawd I hate to make a mental mistake.
71Dragtruck 08-27-2006, 01:38 AM Back in the Hotel room again after a LARGE race day, and the results are I gave up a time trial run for a bit of NOS. Ran a 10.95@121.86, bad news, a little too much brake at the finnish line made me loose out in third round eliminations. Video to follow when I get home. Track photographer missed it, we were the first pair down the track, but I was told that front tire was off the ground 3 inches, Ya! Baby!
57sailplane 08-27-2006, 09:46 AM so
bigjimzIII
what gages do you think need to be at eye level.
its easier to make right, now then later.
i was thinking. fuel presure, oil presure,
bigjimzlll 08-27-2006, 11:20 AM It's not so much eye level as being able to just look down. The OEM guy's pretty much had it right. The 3 guages I look at most are Tranny temp, oil pressure and water temp.
57sailplane 08-27-2006, 03:47 PM man now i am really in a fix.. i dont no were i want them. the reason i didnt want to put them in the orginal place. is cause of seat and wheel placement. here is a view with th smaller wheel held in place. reason for smaller wheel is to get in and out more easily. as you can see there wont be much to look at through the wheel. this is driving me
bigjimzlll 08-27-2006, 09:05 PM after looking at mine...they are lower than where you want to put them....if mine were higher they would be OK.
BTW..after stinking it up yesterday at the track...I runnered up today. Breaking out by .007
Oh yea, I raised my ladder bars 1 hole and it lowered my 60 foot times by a full tenth....and lifted the front wheels on every pass
djracer 08-27-2006, 09:40 PM I didn't get to race this weekend but I did haul it close to the local cruise in and drive the truck over!
71Dragtruck 08-27-2006, 10:04 PM A video from the weekend, wife was a little cheap with the film, or hard drive space I should say at the end.

djracer 08-27-2006, 10:29 PM sweet video! Make sure you turn in your tech card next time!
71Dragtruck 08-27-2006, 10:55 PM It was first run of the day and tech cards were just coming in.
409biscayne 08-28-2006, 01:41 AM I think we need a match race , big jim vs 71dragtruck . Do ya think Spokane is about half way .
I raced last nite , Spokane Pro Gas event , plus about 30 hot rodded Diesel pickups , way too many cars , didn't even race till 9:30 , took the win , although we both broke out , ran my best ever 60ft , 1.98 . Not exactly where y'all are at , but my best.
Have you guys seen those Diesels run ?? OMG . There nuts .
Still thinking about NOS , how consistent is it ??
Later .......................................... 409. :)
71Dragtruck 08-28-2006, 01:47 AM I think Jim needs to update his signature, pretty sure that's not his best anymore. I have alot of tuning to do yet, Want to run around the 10.6's. I wish I was closer though, would love to run with you guy's would make for a fun weekend of racing and bull$hitting that's for sure. Your getting faster all the time there 409, I also think it's time for you to strap on the bottle. ;)
bigjimzlll 08-28-2006, 09:59 AM I'm not running any N20 right now. Trying to win the points deal. As far as N20 being consistant? Well it can be. The guy's who bracket race with it usually only make one pass out of a full bottle.
djracer 08-28-2006, 10:52 AM 71 congrats on breaking into the 10's! I was just playin with ya about the tech card! I hope to get my 9inch convertor back this week but I'm suppossed to be out of town this weekend! I can't wait to try it out again on the spray!
71Dragtruck 08-28-2006, 11:51 AM 71 congrats on breaking into the 10's! I was just playin with ya about the tech card! I hope to get my 9inch convertor back this week but I'm suppossed to be out of town this weekend! I can't wait to try it out again on the spray!
Ya I know, even funnier, there were only about 4 people in the stands also, by the next round when I was off the bottle, they were 3/4's full. I think it's your and Jim's turn for some video, a little less trailer and you could have hired a film crew.
409biscayne 08-29-2006, 12:34 AM Check out the drag video in the General Discussion forum . Holy cr%&.
nxtruck 08-29-2006, 11:51 AM Nice video 71! Congrats on gettin' into the 10's!
71Dragtruck 08-30-2006, 11:39 PM a few pics from the weekend.
71Dragtruck 08-30-2006, 11:40 PM And one of my ugly mug.:o
djracer 08-31-2006, 07:19 AM Trucks lookin good! I don't know about the mug!
71Dragtruck 08-31-2006, 09:45 AM Trucks lookin good! I don't know about the mug!
That's why I run a full face helmet.:hm:
djracer 09-05-2006, 03:32 PM who raced? I think every track around here was racing!
I did the family road trip thing but I fished, drank beer and ate all weekend!
71Dragtruck 09-05-2006, 11:53 PM No racing for me this weekend, slim chance this coming up weekend either. Have points races on the 16th and 17th I plan on being at.
bigjimzlll 09-06-2006, 08:44 AM No racing here...I put the aluminum bed cover on.
A few months ago I broke the rear caliper off at the top end and lock them up hard. I fixed the caliper...I thought...After breakin out in the finals a couple of weeks ago, I was PO and drove up to the tower to get my check, I shut the motor off and coasted to a stop. Well it didn't take long to stop. I heard a grinding noise and it stoped abruptly. The caliper was digging into the wheel. I couldn't even spin the rears over by hand while jacked up.
I have fixed it(temporarily) and it spins easy. I can't wait to see the times with the cover and with out the breaks on.
I will have the video camera this Saturday...so I'll post some videos.
djracer 09-06-2006, 10:54 AM I have fixed it(temporarily) and it spins easy.
This sounds a little scary! What kind of rear brakes do you have and what's temporary about the repair!
We don't want crash video's!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:metal:
bigjimzlll 09-06-2006, 04:04 PM LOL...I removed the caliper and bracket completely. I ran it this way when it originally broke. It stops str8 as can be. Just 75% braking power. It still head and shoulders above the old drum set up.
The calipers are off of a 87 seville. I have to find one in the junk yard to get the bracket.
bigjimzlll 09-10-2006, 04:44 PM posted a couple of chitty videos

bigjimzlll 09-11-2006, 12:35 AM Thanks...
djracer 09-11-2006, 01:27 AM Pretty Kool video's I'll have to blow the dust off my video camera when I get my nos convertor back in!
I drove 60 miles to race 7.0 class tonight and they only had a 6.20 race! I had already made a 6.90 and 6.95 pass I was ready! I new the truck wouldn't go that fast so I unhooked the exhaust trying to gain a little. I ran a 6.53. I went out first round of course! I went another 6.53 first round! I hooked the exhaust back up and it went a 6.62 so the 3 inch flowmasters got to go! What do you guys run for exhaust and have you tried it both ways? (capped and Uncapped)
Kevin
409biscayne 09-11-2006, 02:15 AM What's your tracks Pro class index ?? Thanks ..................... 409
bigjimzlll 09-11-2006, 08:59 AM I run the 3" flowmasters too. delta 40s. I have a set of bullets I'm going to try. They are loud...but if they are worth a tenth....
bigjimzlll 09-11-2006, 09:19 AM What's your tracks Pro class index ?? Thanks ..................... 409

These were heads up classes at an outlaw track! We can brkt race at any E.T. its just electronics or no electronics!
71Dragtruck 09-11-2006, 09:48 AM I run full 3" exhaust with a H-pipe, and Magnaflows. I've never tryed running open headers, too lazy to take it off and put it back on. Some day I might give it a try.
My track Pro class cut off is 7.50 to 13.99, how you like that spread.

nxtruck 09-12-2006, 02:10 PM Pretty Kool video's I'll have to blow the dust off my video camera when I get my nos convertor back in!

KevinI went from a set of 2-chamber flowmaster race muffs to a set of Dynomax Race Magnums in a 3 1/2". Less restriction than the Flowmasters and quieter than the bullet mufflers.
409biscayne 09-25-2006, 01:02 AM Truck ran a 14.31 on the weekend , with a 1.95 60 foot , only one more race day this season , sure hoping for a 14.25 pass . Hey not in the 10's but still a kick .

You have to like the sub 2.00 60', you might have to leave a few parts at home for the last run of the season.
71Dragtruck 09-27-2006, 11:15 PM Anybody besides 409 getting any racing in? Rained here for a week straight, last races of the season were canceled and now moved to this weekend and I have to work. Well so much for some last runs to work the rest of the bugs out of the nitrous system, I guess 10.5's will have to wait till next year.:whine:
bigjimzlll 09-28-2006, 12:05 AM I'm putting a new cam in this week...I have 2 day races all of October...can't wait
71Dragtruck 09-28-2006, 12:09 AM Best I can hope for is the weather holds up and they have another street legal day.
djracer 09-28-2006, 08:25 AM I got my convertor back and I ordered new mufflers and front tires! I might try to race Sunday.
You guys need to moved here to the south we race pretty much year round!
57sailplane 09-28-2006, 12:11 PM hey djracer.. i am having trouble with my step notch on the rear.. cause the roll cage is in the road. yours looks like it runs to near the same place as mine.. could you tell me what size of tube your step notch is made of.. it must be plenty strong for racing...
