View Full Version : Ran 11.44 @117.69mph
71Dragtruck 10-07-2006, 12:33 AM Well how about one last update from you down south guy's, I know I'm done for the season and time to let this thread go to sleep for the winter.:( Guess it's time to get the sled ready for my winter fix of C12 exhaust.;)
bskylerj 10-07-2006, 01:22 AM I have not had a good chance to really fine tune yet but I am running the truck this Sunday as it is the last weekend for us. I know I am running a little rich and need to advance the timing. I really wanted to get it on the dyno and tune it first but that is the break. I will let you know what I run. I am guessing without the tuning I will be in the mid to low 11's. I do not think I will see the 10's until next year.
I will be able to add back in timing quick under boost as I put in the msd boost timing master that allows me to add or take out timing under boost. We put this and the 6AL box in the glove box.
409biscane(Doug) are you heading out this Sunday?
bigjimzlll 10-07-2006, 09:33 AM Ive got 7 more races left this October. 2 this weekend one next then 4 in the last 2 weeks
bigjimzlll 10-07-2006, 09:37 PM red lite first round.....gawd I hate to do that. Theres always tomorrow

409biscane(Doug) are you heading out this Sunday? Oh yeah , i'm racing . Last chance for this year , i don't have any wild motor like some lucky dogs so i've resorted to throwing everything out ( like 71dragtruck said) that i don't need , lol . Tomorrow's the last chance for a 14.25 with this motor , monday my extra 396 is going to the builders , have a t400 with trans brake , etc . Needs to be high 12's for next season.
Brian , we need to have a grudge match , get some pics to post . At least i'll be there at the start .
Later ........................................... 409
71Dragtruck 10-07-2006, 10:27 PM Wish ya better luck tomorrow Jim, got my fingers crossed for your 14.25 also 409, and stock hoods are really heavy.

Man that thing is looking good!
bskylerj 10-08-2006, 03:00 AM Man that thing is looking good!
Thanks. I am in Doug (409) My buddy is also taking his 77 chevy out. He has a factory ac pw big block. He is running 13.90 in it.
409biscayne 10-09-2006, 12:16 PM Raced yesterday , last event of the season around here . Didn't make my goal of 14.25 , it was looking good too , 43 degrees on the way to the track , But there was about a 20mph headwind all day long , ran a 14.31 again , did get my 60ft down to 1.94 , the best yet . Oh well , i did win my bracket and went on to King of the Hill ( all the winners for the various classes ) but went went out 1st round against the car that went on to win . It was the best race i've had for awhile , i cut a light on hin .0170 to his .0490 , but he beat me by .0129 . Going to race Super Street next year , no more trophy class .
Later ............................................ 409 :)

Good job, I might even have a beer later with a toast to you.:cong:
bigjimzlll 10-09-2006, 03:35 PM congrats Doug....I stunk it up again... went .0016 red. I installed a new cam and taller front tires. Just havent got the feel for it yet. 3 more point races left, one is a Wally race and the other is a king of the track. Maybe I can make it count then.
bskylerj 10-10-2006, 04:04 AM Well gentlemen, and I use that term loosly, I did not have as much fun as 409 (Doug) did out at the track. I was the first guy down the track. First run I could not get any traction as I had not taken enough air out of the street slicks. The the truck under full throttle would not shift out of first until I let off of the gass all the way. Then got back into it and spun again. I really only got to be full throttle for the second 1/8th mile of the track. Ran 13.39 at 104.86mph.
Second run took air pressure to 12 and it hooked alot better. I started in second gear to see if tranny would shift on its own from first to second then manually to 3rd. Came out hard ran 1.74 60 ft but when I went to shift to 3rd it slipped and I had to lift again twice to get it to go in to gear.
3rd run I left it in drive to see if it would shift on its own through out. Launched hard again but slipped again trying to get into drive. I had to let out again ran 12.90 at 114 mph. I also foulded a plug on this run as I was running to rich. As mentioned earlier last week I have not had time to get it on the dyno to tune it in. So I sat and watched 409 and some other friends do some racing as I did not want to brake anything else.
I know I have the power and speed to get close to where I want just need a tune and a little item called a freaking tranny to get there. The worst part is I have to wait till next year.
Here is some pics of 409 (Doug) out at the track.
71Dragtruck 10-10-2006, 09:44 AM That kind of sucks, but it is hard to run fast at the track and a smooth daily driver, a little more work and you'll find the happy medium. Full manual valve body, and a ratchet shifter will fix that shifting problem.;) My tranny has no choice, even 100mph, if I want 1st I would get 1st. You have any pics of the inside of your cab, dash and stuff, can't remember if I seen it before.
409biscayne 10-10-2006, 12:39 PM bskylerj Thanks for posting pix , one day i'll learn how to do that . That was a fun day , pretty darn cold though . I have a quick question for the the big block dudes: My extra 396 is on the trailer , ready to go to the builders , it's a 67 Camaro motor , with the 98cc closed chamber oval port heads , i'll know more about the engine as soon as its apart , but the heads look like they haven't been ported / messed with , do you think i should sell them to someone restoring an original Camaro / Chevelle and pick up a newer set of alum heads ?? What should they bring ?? This motor also came with a factory alum square port intake manifold , casting nbr ground off when polished , cast date 1.2.66 This should be worth a few $$$ also ?
Thanks ........................................... 409
Hey Big Jim , did you notice the rims and tires ? They worked great , thx .

I might be switching to a center console. Here is a pic.
71Dragtruck 10-10-2006, 01:37 PM Just like the rest of your truck, very nice and clean.
bskylerj 10-10-2006, 01:47 PM Here is a video of a race. This was the only good pass. With the supercharger I am building to much pressure in the crank case and it blew my dip stick tube out and sprayed oil all down my headers.

Hey Big Jim , did you notice the rims and tires ? They worked great , thx .
IMO, I would just use those heads, build a budget motor, and save your money to build something bigger later. I know you could always use the heads on the new motor, but you would have to run the oval port, cause rec port would be too big for the 396. But I guess you could run unported oval on you 396, and if you went to a 427 to 468 combo and port them that would work, plus you'd save 100lbs. Now I can't decide:lol: flip a coin.
O.K. changed my mined go with some oval port Edelbrock RPM's, open, dome pistons for 10:1, bolt them on as is. You can port them in the future if you go bigger. Also go with a RPM intake, it should port match as is to the heads, and a 1 7/8" Hooker Super Comp. As for the intake, I'd think when it was polished it lost any collector value, and now would be just a outdated intake.
bigjimzlll 10-10-2006, 11:35 PM Hey Doug...I did notice the wheels...I still have extra center caps for them. I have to get them to you. Looks good by the way
Did I tell you guys I'm building a BBC?
540
13.5-1
AFR 315 CNC heads
I'm figuring an honest 800HP
bskylerj 10-10-2006, 11:40 PM sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet

You going to put your nitrous kit on it, not that you'll need it. Man I wish I would have went with a 540, but just wasn't in the budget at the time.
bigjimzlll 10-11-2006, 09:29 AM I'm not planning on N20...but...you know how that goes. When I typed 540 I was still trying to talk myself into it. I am buying the parts now. I have 2 454 blocks so I could go 496 for a total of $8,000.00...If I go 540(dart block) It would be 10 grand. I can't decide if the extra 44 CI is worth $2,000.00.
71Dragtruck 10-11-2006, 11:55 AM Same with me, it would have been about $3000 canadian more for a 540, now it would be $7000 with the machine work and parts to change over OUCH!
nate68 10-11-2006, 02:42 PM they added 2 extra street drag events in Redding. Hopefully i'll be able to make one of them. my truck is in my uncle's shop right now due to construction at my place so i wont have access to it for a few weeks.
bskylerj,
the color of your dash and dashpad looks about the same color as mine.
409biscayne 10-12-2006, 09:52 PM Crap . My extra 396 has about a .060 score in nbr 7 cylinder . Heres some options:
Use the 98cc heads on my existing 396 , i was trying to keep that one all original, in case i want to sell the truck down the road .
Find another decent 396 block .
Build the mid 70's 454 i have sitting in the shop , don't want to do that .
What pistons does my orig 396 have , presuming its stock ??
I can't spend a boat load of money , i've got kids in college , lol.
Comments ................................................ Doug.
71Dragtruck 10-13-2006, 01:13 AM Use your 454 block and build a 427, or go 60 over on the 396, either way your buying pistons. Or like I mentioned before, make a trip up to Canada and buy my 396 ;). Why don't you want to build the 454?
bskylerj 10-13-2006, 01:23 AM I agree Doug, build the 454. Build yourself a 496. I have a new fuel cell sitting here (well at Brians) as well if you need. I am sure Brian can donate some items. Infact he is not using his new motor yet. Let's put that in your truck. lol
Is the 454 a 4 bolt?
bskylerj 10-15-2006, 09:23 PM Doug, In my post of the Truck vs Nova I just put a video up there and your truck is on there.
409biscayne 10-16-2006, 12:00 AM Yeah , that is so cool . I'm impressed , liked the tunes too .
Can't wait for next year.
Later ...................................... Doug .
djracer 10-19-2006, 12:28 PM Doug I also would build the 454! I love my 468! But I wish I would have bought a set of aluminum heads though!
I dropped my best 1/8 mile Et with my exhaust swap! I went 6.44 on the motor but I have put the nos convertor back in so I'm ready to spray it and see some 5.'s
bigjimzlll 10-24-2006, 01:18 AM heres a link to some parts you guys might be interested in

PM sent.
bigjimzlll 10-29-2006, 07:50 PM Just finished the last race of the year...I ended up in second place in the points championship in pro. I also runnered up in the king of the track race. Got a cool hat..lol.
In yesterdays race(I was 30 points out of first) I won the first round and when I shut down it popped and caught fire :O... I got it running but it wasn't right. I staged(thats all I could do) and the guy went red!! The next round I got the bye run..lol The fourth round I tried to run but it popped and caught on fire again. I thought I broke the engine good. Turns out the rotor came unscrewed and fell off.(MSD) It was a new distributor and I never checked the screws. It was an easy fix and the engine is still perfect.
all in all a good season...so close to being a real good season..
djracer 10-30-2006, 08:28 AM Jim I'm glad you had a great season sorry you had the rotor problems. I'd put lock tite on those screws! I had to Dj all weekend. I have got to get some more high octane fuel so I can try mine on the spray again! I'm gonna try to get it on some 4 corner scales asap!
Kevin
71Dragtruck 10-30-2006, 08:44 AM Good job.:metal:
409biscayne 10-30-2006, 09:56 AM Jim
Looks like you had luck on your side at that last race , runner up for King of the track , gotta love that . You'll get 'em next year . :)
What kinda times were you running ?
Later ................................... Doug
bigjimzlll 10-30-2006, 04:18 PM I've been running 11.10 at 118 off of the transbrake, but since I changed camshafts(middle of the season...doh) it reacts much quicker. I couldn't figure out the tree so I started foot breaking this last weekend. It went 11.30 at 116 off of the foot brake. I was lucky too that my reputation of "killing the tree" made some guys go red.
BTW I've sold my engine locally for 3500.00 complete. He got a screamin deal.
bskylerj 11-08-2006, 02:27 AM Alright here is a question for you. What % of power do you lose on the dyno through a turbo 400 with a 3000 stall? I thought I was told about 32% on the dyno. Any thoughts?
djracer 11-08-2006, 07:19 AM I'm not sure but thats sound like allot of loss! I would quess more like 15 to 20 percent!
bskylerj 11-09-2006, 01:19 AM Well gentlmen and I use that term loosely, it has been a sad, sad day. I had to put a new tranny in the truck and we got that finished up on Monday. We putit on the dyno today to finish tuning it up before I took the truck down to Phoenix to the Goodguys show. We put it on the dyno and made the first run to find out where the settings were at. It was rich down low and lean on the top end. Made a good pull for the first pull and knowing we needed to tune it better it pulled 526 horse and 493 foot pounds of torque at 5800 rpm's to the rear wheels. We were pleased but new there was more in there. I am running a turbo 400 and a 3000 stall. One of the problems is I have 10 to 1 compression and 8lbs of boost.
After shutting it down to tweak on it we started it back up to make a run and there was a god awfull noise. We started tearing into the top but found nothing. I pulled the pan and we looked further into the motor and found theat cylinder #8 has a seized wrist pin. It has caused some cylinder damage and I must tear the motor down.
Iwill now go a 8 to 1 compession motor with about 15lbs of boost and should produce around 750 to 800 horse at the crank. It feels like I just got this thing together, oh yea i did....:whine:
djracer 11-09-2006, 09:19 AM That really sux! Good luck with the rebuild!
Kevin
bigjimzlll 11-09-2006, 09:22 AM Tuff break, you've had your share of trouble. What octane fuel are you running? Sounds like detonation killed your pin.
71Dragtruck 11-09-2006, 09:22 AM OUCH!!! I feel your pain, that's how I ended last season, a wounded motor.:(
On the bright side if there is one, stroke that baby!!!
57sailplane 11-11-2006, 08:41 AM oh man that really sucks. sorry to here of the loss.. well at least maybe you can build a stronger motor now.. i think 8 to 1 will make for a less fussy motor under presure.. good luck with the rebuild. let us know how it goes..
71Dragtruck 02-02-2008, 12:10 PM Just an up for me, Liz moved this thread over to the new section today.
