Hi guys. I'm new to the forum. Figured I'd ask around for advice. I have a 72 GMC Sierra Grande, and I've heard there are some cool digital radios that fit in the stock holes. I WILL NOT cut up my dash, but having a new radio would be kinda nice. Any of you guys found a good solution for a new radio that fits in the original openings? Thanks in advance.

Custom Autosound makes a head unit that fits the factory opening. If I'm not mistaken it is an AM/FM unit with a cassette player that has the ability to control a remote mounted CD changer. I haven't heard from anyone who thought it was worth the $$$. I personaly mounted a unit in the glovebox and control it via a remote mounted to the steering column.

I was'nt happy with the quality of the Custom Autosound either. Here's a pic of their unit. I ended up selling mine and putting the stock AM back in the dash and putting a CD player in the glovebox.

who makes that glove box liner for the head unit.

kelsfine69 had them for a/c & non a/c...

Both of mine are Vintage Air glove box liners. I just cut a hole for the stereo and wrapped what was sticking out with some adhesive black felt.

ya just go with some kind of universal mount under the dash or in the glovebox if you dont want to cut your dash those are about your only options

I'm currently tackling this problem in my dad's '67 El Camino. Firstly, we need to examine all your options at this point before making a decision.

Option 1:

You can install the head unit just as you showed, but I would place it level instead of at an angel, this will allow better access to the faceplate and make room for incoming and outgoing CD's.

Option 2:

You get a new headunit from Custom Auto Sound that will look very much like the original piece, but will have modern internals and provisions for a CD changer, iPod, and preouts for an amplifier. (Personally, I'm not impressed with these headunits, but they are basically the only thing on the market for this sort of application.)

Option 3:

You install the headunit as discussed in Option 1, but you run an infrared reciever to the dash so that the remote for the headunit can work properly if at all.

Another way you can do this is to run a "ribbon" wire arrangement from the headunit to the detached faceplate and then place it on your dash.

A "ribbon" wire looks just like an IDE cable from inside your computer. It's very thin and flat and probably an inch wide or more.

Option 4:

You get over your fear of cutting metal and make provisions for a new headunit where that old AM radio resides and then wire that puppy up.
