Screw that. Go Dell.

http://configure.us.dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?c=us&cs=19&l=en&oc=DB110A&s=dhs

http://www.dell.com/content/products/features.aspx/dimen_1100?c=us&cs=04&l=en&s=bsd

$299.

Either one will work, but it's pretty barebones and really, I hate celeron processors.

It sounds like he needs to save anothe 200.00 to get what he needs. Buy a gragae sale monitor for now and spend everything he can afford on the processor...:)

:agree:

sorry man, but if he only has $300, beggars can't be choosers....this is the perfect time for your younger brother to understand YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR.

You can get some smokin' deals on computers. But, not $300 smokin. If you do, it comes w/o the monitor.

Ah, you didn't say that. I would have picked up a barebones system from Monarch Computer.

you didn't say you guys were willing to build, either.

I would have stepped up to a socket 939 system...
motherboard $51 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813153029) (or HERE for $59 (http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/ProductDetail.jsp?ProductCode=247023) FREE shipping)
cpu AMD Athlon64 3000+ $66 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16819103537) - includes heatsink/fan (or HERE for $67 (http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/ProductDetail.jsp?ProductCode=80699-5) free shipping)
memory, 2x 256MB sticks for 512MB $49 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820141213) - needed for dual channel which is pretty much needed.
ATi 9550 video card $42 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814121012) (or HERE $30 (http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/ProductDetail.jsp?ProductCode=326705) after rebate, free shipping)

$208 with this list and can build a pretty kickass computer, the only other item you may need is a power supply, you will need minimum 350Watts, HERE is a 580Watt cool looking one for $30 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817163018) or if you want something of quality that will probably be used in the next computer build when he graduates and still be running 10 years down the road, try an ANTEC 350W for $50 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817103934).
even with the Antec power supply, you're still under $300 including shipping.
Another option is the Coolermaster 380W for $35 (http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/ProductDetail.jsp?ProductCode=370778) but FREE shipping.
Using the added items, it would be $240 free shipping (with shipping only on the memory, $3-5).

then figure in all of your cables, floppy drive, cdrom drive, case and several other things and you bring the total price up another $150. ;)
