With the baby on the way I am in the process of starting to work from home a couple of days per week. Already got the fax line installed and need to figure out a way to communicate with the server back at the office (about 15 miles away). I saw an ad where you could do it online but at our office we only have dial up as high speed isn't quite available in our area. Any ideas on how to do it. I love my job but the stress at the office is just killing me, and since it is a family business I just can't quit. Plus I wouldn't mind being able to be at home where I can focus a little better and keep an eye on my wife in the final couple weeks of pregnancy.

You're going to be hating remotely connecting to the server unless you have broadband on both sides. \

My recommendation is going with a satellite internet provider. I went to Google.com and searched for "satellite internet ontario" and got this company, amongst others:

http://www.broadbandontario.com/

Satellite is available almost anywhere. Most vell providers here in the US like Verizon offer cards for cellular internet also, which might be another option for you.

Once you upgrade to broaband and get a router (you will need one!), maybe we could talk? At that time, it would be very helpful to know what operating system the server has - and what version...is it Linux - what flavor? Windows? 2000? XP? Small Business Server?

First important thing is having the connection speeds you need. Next is security. Last is the setup/configuration to make it all work.

Thanks, I have broadband at home and we are supposed to be able to get High Speed at the office mid month. We use XP at the office and at the house. At the office we use a regular server through a router. Thanks again.

I work from home several times a week, and I am using dsl at home. Using Remote Desktop (my home machine and work machine are WinXP) allows me to work using my work machine as thou I was sitting in the office. You would need to enable remote desktop on your work machine, then at home, you connect to it, and then you will be using your work machine with your home monitor/keyboard/mouse. (I am sure you have to get remote access to your work's network as well)

Allows me to spend a lot more time with my little boy!!!! :)

so, let me be clear on this - the server is also running Windows XP? Is it Windows XP Professional, Windows XP Home, or Windows XP Media Center Edition?

If it's not XP and it's 2000 instead, I will need to know if it is Windows 2000 Professional, Windows 2000 Server, or Windows 2000 Advanced Server. If it's Windows 2003, I need to know the same (server/advanced server/etc.:))

So ...

Let me know what you've got. I can help with explaining the configuration you would want to use ...

To give you my professional advice on how to set this up on your own, I will need to get reaaaally specific. Like, I will need to know the manufacturer and model # of your router, and a little more information about your internal setup.
