How hard is it to lay flat black? I am leaning towards flat black for the color for my pickup.

Do a search on "John Deere Blitz Black." If you are looking for the rat rod look, then I think this may be what you are looking for ... very affordable and much better protection than just plain black primer.

PPG also sells a clear coat... I think its called Flex-n-Flat ... im to lazy to look.. but you spray it just like any other clear coat and it gives the paint a satin finish

believe it or not I think I heard something about what people actually use is vinyl spray when they want that type of look. But even though it's a flat spray it will still show all inperfections, Guys that shoot that on their rods have body work that is good enough to spray regular paint so if your looking to hide blemishes it will not do the trick. We all know the best color for that is white

As of right now I dont' plan on doing any body work as far as dents go, which there aren't any that are real bad. I guess I am not really sure which direction I want to go, do the body work and do a good paint job or leave the body work and do a quick paint job. What do you think it would cost me to paint it myself with a single stage paint? I plan to make this truck a DD, no show room truck as of right now.

Hey have you thought about just sanding and doing primer for a while until you decide? If you do the black in some of those products and then decide later to go with body and paint then I don't know how hard that stuff is to get off. Otherwise if you want a single stage white (which is about the cheapest paint you can buy) look for brands like nason. Just about every paint store has a cheap single stage that is affordable or see if they have any "oops" paint (paint they made a mistake in mixing that they sell cheap) either way I would do the body work regardless of which way you go even if there little dings, its good practice if nothing else. If you do primer Walmart sells the cans for .94 cent a can and it's cool for somthing temp.

Dupont "Hot Hues" has a color called "Hot Rod Black" which is a flat black that is made as a finish top coat that is sealed when cured unlike primer.

Musclerodz is right on the money. Primer is not a sealer for the sheet metal and bare primer will let moister "pass thru" and allow oxidation to begin on the underlying sheetmetal.

Blitz Black is a paint and there for a sealer. It would be no harder than primer to remove once the time comes for that.

guy said just buy 2 quarts of clear and add flat agent to seal the deal.

Grind you rust down and make patches to weld or rivet use some bondo.
Sand down with 80 and 120. seal with primer

Clean with mineral sprits

Wait for a rainy day and get out there with 220 320 and 400(use where needed) grit wet sand and a bucket of water( clean paper in) and your hose. ( wear rain gear if you want)

clean with mineral spirts and paint it. clear it

You can use fixed and flat from ppg it has a nice even flat look unlike primer. and the fixed and flat will get as flat as you want. it is the same thing that we use on the benz for there lower trim panels.

PPG dp90, I laid the primer down when i was 15, and it's still strong 3 years later. It's a nonrusting primer, so it won't rust after a year or two, only crappy part is that it doesn't like to be sanded down cuz it's really thin.

JD Blitz Black is easy to spray and is cheap. I painted my son's '67 about a year ago and it still looks good.( For an amateur driveway job.) It does show bad body work just like glossy black will. Spend an extra weekend on body work and you'll be happy.

Do a search on a paint called Hotrod Flatz by house of color I have it for my truck and seen it on many others. It is a one stage has clear already premixed in it. The Part # is KUS HRF-102 This is a kit.

there is little difference between blitz black and rattle bomb stuff. its both uncatalyzed. wipe thinner on blitz black years later and it will come right off. a good epoxy primer is way better protection against the elements because its catalyzed glue. it will chalk up in the sun, but i'm sure blitz black will too. boo for blitz black, hooray for house of kolor products, flat clear, flat single stage urethane, and black epoxy primers! I have used the Dupont Hot Rod Black someone mentioned above. It lays out nice and is really black, not grey or charcoal looking like some of the other flat blacks I have seen. Oh, and it is catalyzed.
