hey guys my sister in law is wanting to put in a fax in her home,is all she need to do is buy one and hook it up the the phone line on the computer or does it needs its own phoneline?anyone recomend a good buy on one?thanx all.

Several folks I know have one hooked with the existing phones. Basically, they have it set like an answering machine. If you don't pick up the phone within the specified number of rings, the fax will answer instead.
Others have theirs connected but off. You have to call them and let them know you are about to fax something....then they turn on the fax and it will answer. After they are done recieving, they cut it back off.

It's totally possible to set it up. There are also several programs out there for the computer that will allow you to receive a fax to your computer if it's attached to the phone line and the program is actively listening on the modem.

One thing to look at in the fax machine, is if she is running a answering machine at the house make sure the FAX machine has the TAD option. That way the answering machine and the fax can share the same line..

if she has a computer with Windows XP then there is no need for a fax machine. She can hookup the phone line to a modem and receive faxes over the computer or can type comething up and fax it out. This way itdoesn't waste fax paper, only the ones you want get printed out...
