View Full Version : Wireless network ? 79Silv4x4 08-09-2006, 03:25 PM Okay, got my Linksys cable modem and router set up. My daughter's computer connects and has very good signal but IE won't connect to anything on the web. Where do I start? shifty 08-09-2006, 03:47 PM i'll assume that this is the wireless router you posted about before, and that you're trying to use wireless. start by plugging her directly into the router and see if she is able to connect then (wired). if not, did you call the cable company and register the MAC Address of the new modem with them? if not, they probably are not allowing your modem to use their network! if the cable company did register the MAC, and plugging in directly gave you internet, start by rebooting her machine after you've typed in the key required to hop on the network. Sometimes a reboot is required - don't ask why, I don't really know, it's just a quirk. if the connection still will not work after that, choose "Run" from the start menu and type the letters cmd into the box, then click OK. this should open a 'DOS prompt' or 'command prompt'. You will be greeted with a blinking cursor. For your first command, type in ipconfig /all and hit ENTER. make a note of the space between the "g" and the "/" in that command. you should see a printout like this: Microsoft Windows XP [Version 5.1.2600] (C) Copyright 1985-2001 Microsoft Corp. The cable modem has been registered with the cable company. It and the router are set up in my office and her PC is in her bedroom. Anyways, the ip address listed is 192.168.1.101 I have not tried the wired connection yet--gotta get a long cable to run from the router or drag her unit out and into my office. Palf70Step 08-09-2006, 06:33 PM One simple thing it may be, if she was not connecting thru the cable to the Internet before is go in and make sure IE is set to detect a proxy (Tools, Internet Options, Connections, Lan Settings) or make sure it is not is not trying to dial out for internet. 79Silv4x4 08-09-2006, 06:42 PM Thanks for the tips--none of them worked b/c the problem was with the idiot working on it (me  ). I had everything connected and then decided to mount the wireless router on the wall in order to get it out of the way and to give the antennas an unobstructed path. However, in doing so I neglected to connect the cable modem and router back together. That's why she was able to connect to the router but unable to get online. Thanks guys!
