Anyone know where I can find the actual legislation on this? I've heard a lot of hearsay and I need the letter of the law, not what a friend's friend said

I know first hand that the airdrie RCMP will take it into their own hands quite literally and peel your side window tint at the side of the road, I'll be watching this one Z16 08-20-2006, 11:19 AM Anything in front of the drivers shoulder is illegal. Behind the drivers shoulder anything is OK. I was gonna fight this one, so I read the law. It's one that doesn't make sense, because they say it is for the cops protection, so they can see into the car. Yet, you can run painted black windows behind the driver, so how do they see though that?????? If it's a 72 or older, with flat glass, you can have windows made that are already tinted. A buddy did this on his Beetle. Then, he got a rubber stamp shop to produce a stamp that looked like the stock etching on the original windows. He used some sort of acid on the stamp to create his own etchiing on the window. He gets stopped once in a while, but his windows appear to be approved, and he tells the cops that tinted windows were an option. Hasn't got a ticket in 10 years in that car. I'd like to see those Airdrie jerk cops try to peel that off. TravisH 08-20-2006, 01:40 PM Thats what I'm looking at Z16, getting a tinted one piece window kit from brothers. Its light (35%) but if I get stopped I wanted to know my legalities. I know that film tint on the front windows is illegal and I've heard two reasons. Safety for the cop and that so in accidents the film won't hold the window together if its gets smashed to get you out. I'm looking for a clause that specifies tint film as illegal just so I would be clear. I'm still going to stop at the RCMP for a hard copy, just have to find a time when I'm not working and they are. So a window has to have the stamp be legal is what you think then? Z16 08-21-2006, 09:23 AM Still not technically legal, but probably enough to fool the dumbass RCMP. I would go out of your town to get info from them too. That way they don't know you, and won't be waiting for you togive you a ticket as soon as you get the tint installed. The smashing the window thing is a big joke that some cop probably made up.. I have seen lots of tempered glass just shatter and stay in place. Anyway, I would rather it did then be covered by hundreds of tiny shards of flying glass. All it takes is another soft hit, and the whole thing peels out as one. Seems safer for everyone. grnddwn 08-23-2006, 09:38 PM Check the alberta goverment web page under the highway traffic act. You can request a copy of the act it has all the rules in it. We deal with alot of this stuff at the shop and I used to be on the SVAA comittie. |
