Just wondering who has done a cold air intake on their truck. I'd like to know what kind of improvement it made (power/mileage), what system you used, and if you had any problems (air flow sensor, ecu needing reprogrammed). I'm thinking about doing it to my '01, hoping to get a little more mileage and maybe power. At current gas prices, any improvement helps! Thanks!

I have had the K&N FIPK Cold Air Intake on my 2000 5.3l GMC for over 100K miles. Lets in much more air and the intake tube is much less restrictive then the OEM unit. No mods, updates needed to install a cold air intake setup.

Some prefer the closed systems like the volant, etc but dyno tests show they are pretty close to the open system like the K&N. They have shown to net a 4.5HP increase at the rear wheels over OEM.

Thanks Joe. I saw an article in Sport Truck that had this and a couple other mods on an '06 that claimed to get them something like 50hp and 3-5mpg. All their stuff is a little rich for my blood, but this is something I had already been thinking of doing.
KN claims a 9 hp increase, the FramBoost claims 16hp! I was more concerned with picking up a mile or 2 on mpg.

Magazine HP gains are always inflated :D

With the K&N showing 4.5HP at the rear wheels, 9 at the motor sounds right.

Framboost is the latest thing out there, quite a few guys on fullsizechevy.com have them and seem very happy with it.

Which issue (month) of Sport Truck were you looking at?

I think I may give the FramBoost a try, it would be nice to not have an oiled filter. I run a KN on my bike, and it's good, but the cleaning and oiling thing gets old.

With normal driving you only need to clean/oil it annually. I'd much rather do that then keep buying filters :D

According to the FramBoost site "the filter is washable and reusable without the need for oiling..." So, it is not an expendable item like a regular filter, but a lifetime like the KN. One of the good ways to justify the cost! I'll keep you updated if I go there.

Interesting, are they the only company with a filter that you wash but don't oil?

Hey Joe, do you possibly have the kit part # and approximate price for it? That's a 5.3, right?

I know people ask this a thousand times, but did you notice any mpg increase? My truck is totally stock and I'm gettin 18mpg at 75mph and almost 19 mpg at 65 mph. I get 15 city no matter what I do (which is probably 80% of my driving :( )

Just curious.

Something else I noticed.... did you have to relocate your rad. overflow?

Did a quick ebay search for the part number 57-3021-1 and came up with these:

The price on KN's site is high, Summit has it for $250, and the Ebay prices are better than that. The Fram was $240. Sorry I didn't warn you about KN!

It's a simple install and does give a noticable increase on the seat-o-meter. With the cost of gas these days even a real world 1 mpg increase would pay for one of these pretty quick.
