well it might not be real corvette rim but it is a knock off and very similar with a few differences like bigger slots and his has 9 slots and the vette rim only has 8 slots and it also has an extra lip which is probably because its a different backspacing than a vette rim but does appear to have a corvette spinner (still might be a knock off as well) because of the corvette crossed flags on the center cap. Byrd's rims would look awesome polished and with the red pin stripe on the rim with a set of red pin stripe tires :metal:

I believe the wheels are called speed racers or something like that. They are very similiar to the vettes and yes I agree with the both of you that they would llok good polished up. I especially like the 8's up front and 10's in the rear.
Would a mother's ball or similiar product polish them up like the vettes liquiddragon posted?

The wheels look like 'Bassett' racing wheels which circle track guys use (& NASCAR as previuosly mentioned). They come in 15x8" & 15x10" widths & are 5x5 bolt pattern.

Very nice build-up thread BTW.

Yeah I LOVE THE DOLLY, haven't used it to tip and flip yet, but that time is fast approaching:metal:
I went with 6" hard rubber casters as most of the area aroung the shop is gravel except for inside the shop. I for them from Harbor freight for $16 a piece and they roll awesome on anything!!:)

Well, if I am wrong, I'll admit it it, but this just doesn't look like a steel wheel to me. How about it Byrd, Steel or Aluminum?

smbrouss70 You are correct, they are aluminum wheels, they are VERY LIGHT, about 12-15 lbs with the tire.

Boog
11-21-2006, 08:19 PM
Will somebody please figure out just what these wheels are? It's killing me! Vette's have 8 slots, these have 9. Bassett wheels have 8 and are steel, no aluminum listed on site. Is this a one off set of wheels? Have you checked the bolt pattern size yet? I'm puzzled....

byrd
11-21-2006, 08:34 PM
boog what do you mean by bolt pattern size? they are 5 on 5
I too would like to know, I go them off a truck I parted and the
PO didn't know what they were, he thought they were corvette
wheels as I did when I first bought the truck.

Boog
11-21-2006, 08:45 PM
Well the Vette's are 5x4 3/4, the trucks are 5x5. Do you suppose the hubs have been redrilled to make the wheels fit the truck? Naw, too many slots to be Vette wheels. I don't know what they are but I like 'em! Give a call around to find a wheel refinishing shop, one that repairs and refinishes alum wheels and see what they can do for them. With no obvious scrapes and gouges they should clean up real nice.

Awesome story and a great job you're doing. Stuff like this encourages us older guys to help kids who are interested in rebuilding and preserving "old iron". BTW, when you took the serpentine system fro the '89 'Burb, did you also take the water pump? When I did the serp on mine, I found that the pump runs in the opposite direction from the original.

Great job and thanks for sharing!:c2:

Bob,
sorry I missed you question. Yes they are new and they are stainless from Inlinetube.com

I will have to have some of the pieces remade to custom lengths as my tranny and new style x-member is causing me some headaches. I think I will need a longer from cable and a longer tensioner and a shorter intermediate cable to make it work.

Finally a little progress. I got some 88-95 shorty ceramic coated headers from Skip white on Ebay. They fit good and look great, however I did have to trim the DS frame rail about 1/4" for about 2" on the top rail. The factory already had a little section trimmed out and I just extended it a little and looks like it has always been there.
I got the last of the serpentine kit finished up and the belt installed, ready to go!!
I still have to see what it is going to take to finish up the exhaust, parking brake cables, driveshaft and that will complete the drivetrain and the chassis, except for a few little details. Hopefully I can get it really close and ready for the body work by first week or two in January.
I will update the pics showing the headers tomorrow I didn't have my camera with me at the shop today.

byrd
12-17-2006, 08:04 PM
Pics of the headers on the truck and where I trimmed the frame a little, also a pic of the serpentine belt set-up completed:c2:
The DS header looks like I will not be able to keep the exhaust inside the frame rail so I will most likely go under the tranny and to the outside of the frame to the back of the wheel and dump there some way, not sure which way yet:crazy:
What do you guys think?

The headers are for a fuel injected 88-95 truck and that is the O2 sensor blocked off.
The third and fourth plug back on both sides would be the worst of it and they don't look too tough, I just couldn't beat the price and they are the style are that I wanted:cool:

A little progress to report. I have got a veteran bodyman who is one of my closest childhood friends older brother, and he has agreed to help me out with Frank. We started on the cab and have made some good progress. The first spot was the firewall on the DS as it had been beaten up pretty good by what looked to be a flat tire in times gone by, while he worked it over with a hammer and dolly for several hours the pinched welds on the seam between the floor and the firewall started breaking apart and we had to drill some holes to spot weld it back together. The cab support rail(?) also need some attention as the spot welds in it near where the floor and firewall meet and alos at the top where it attaches to the firewall near where the steering column will be. We still need to shrink the metal around where the wiring harness comes out of the firewall, but will do all the shrinking at the same time. We have dollied out all the dents we can get to and he has worked the PS cab corner straight (what a job that was!!)and we found a few pin holes in it that we welded up last night. While he worked on the cab corner I started shaving the firewall, I got the heater box shave and the clutch rod hole shaved, still have to do the gas filler, blower motor, and a few small holes in the firewall that I won't be using. I'm going to shave as much as I can off the firewall, including the tach wiring hole, the taillight harness hole, and all the little rubber retainer holes that were used to hole the firewall padding in place. I may even shae the sppedo cable hole if I can come up wioth a good way to route it and keep it inside the cab until it has to go down to the tranny.I have a old high school buddy that is going to let me use his stud welder and slide hammer to pull a few dents out that we can't get from inside. I will get started on that this weekend if I have the time. Now for a few pics:gi:

A little progress to report:metal: I got the cab sandblasted this week, and it came out looking VERY good. All four supports are perfect as well as the cab corners(a couple of very small pinholes did show up), floors, roof and firewall:c2: Tonight we roughed the metal up a little and a good wipe down with pre clean and got the cab in primer so we can touch it and work on it, also so it won't surface rust in this lovely warm/cold(same day:crazy: ) Kentucky weather. The inner rockers are going to need a piece cut out and welded in, and a small repair in both foot wells, maybe a very small piece of floor on the near the kicks on both sides, and of course outer rockers:cool: Will start on those repairs and alittle filler work this coming week and hope to keeps things moving along. Here are a few b-4 and after pics of teh cab blasted and primered.

Well I finally got back to the truck after nearly a month of bitter cold weather. We started the night off with getting the inner rockers cut out on both sides and started to get the footwells shaped up. I had to cut a lttle from the floor on PS above the front support, (which looks great on the inside BTW:) ) Rick got part of the DS inner rocker shaped up and into place. We couldn't just use the inner rocker patch as the floors were pitted really bad just outside of the inner rocker patch panel. So we had to use the rear floor patch, and the front floor patch. We just cut away most of the rear patch and the side of the floor patch off to give us the piece we needed.Hopefully we will have the pieces patched back in and get the doors mounted up so we can mock up the outer rockers by the end of next week.I also got the rest of the PS firewall shaved and welded up ready to work on shaping the firewall where the fan motor was to make the firewall match on both sides. It shouldn't be too bad as I have a piece of firewall I cut out of a junk cab to help in making the piece. Should make it a lot easier since it will be nearly the shape from the begining and also has the correct lip on it to make it look like it was suppossed to be there.
Here are some pics of the progress....

Howdy Byrd... I've got a 69 CST that is just about ready to be pulled apart. But before I start I'm doing a skills check... I think I ready but would like to get some insight into the actual separation of the three main body sections. Looks straight forward... sorta, I've seen shots where a cherry picker is used to remove the cab and bed... the work on the front clip seems fairly clear.

So I guess question is.... what can ya tell me...? Any secrets....? I seen most of your build photos (which are pretty awesome).

thanks,

Thanks for the words of encouragement guys!!! This part is moving kinda slow with the cold weather. Hopefully this upcoming week we will be able to make some big progress. The goal is to have the floors spots patched, inner rockers screwed in place and get the doors on and lined up to start mocking up the outers rockers and getting all the gaps right before we weld everything up.
It is soooo nice to have a guy like Rick helping me, I doubt I would have been able to afford to build this truck without him. Rick has been restoring old Camaro's and Chevelle's for over 15 years, and has a 72 short fleet of his own as well as restored a few trucks for customers in the past. I took auto body in high school(15 years ago) and have a little knowledge that I retained, more than I thought once I got into this truck with him, but still very limited :)

I used Eastwoods 3 step chassic paint kit. Two part converter, rust encapsulator(wasn't any left on the frame anyway but I had it so I used it) and then about 2-3 coats of high gloss epoxy chassis black.

Got a little more done on Frank, started to get the DS inner and outer rockers on. I couldn't just use the inner rocker patch as the little bit of rust was just outside the reach of that panel:whine: So I had most every patch panel from a previous cab so we used part of the rear floor patch for half of the inner and a little piece of the floor. We then tried to use the inner rocker part of the front floor patch and found it was WAY different and too short on one side to make it look right. So not having a break I grabbed some patch metal Rick brought over and headed to a local HVAC supply house. I took the piece needed to show the guy, he says no problem take me about 10 minutes @ $1/minute. He starts to cut and shape it for me and asks me what it is for and I tell him for my 67 shorty, and he tells me about one he had and a story or two while he worked. Took him about 20 minutes as he machine was making square cuts and the inner bends are more rounded. So anyway he gets it close enough to bang on little at the shop and tells me don't worry about the $$, just bring the truck by when your done:) I was like:c2: sure will and may be back for for more panels if the rest are this chitty:lol:

The first pic shows an old piece of DS firewall I had and used to make the needed shape on the PS for where I shaved the blower motor. Well my first attempt turned out OK (second pic) but it was too weak. So I had another idea, I needed to have the same piece between the outer lip and the firewall to make the panel sturdy enough. So I cut the rest of that old firewall and then sliced one side and shaped it to what I needed and then welded it up and cleaned it up a little.I left most of my old piece in there just shaved the top edge about 3/8" to give me a nice and easy spot to weld to. You can see in the pic with the piece in the vise that I still havce the back side so I can weld it to the firewall of the cab for strength. The best part is that the piece I made the second time has a better, more defined lip so that it better matches the original:metal: It is not welded up yet but just in place to show what it will look like.
We welded up a couple small holes in the DS cab corner(that is Rick welding BTW) and got the door hung and mocked up the outer rocker. The door fits really well, except a little tight at the top of the winshield pillar. will have to grind and shape the door a little there.Got the rocker back off and drilled out to spot weld it back in place and put back on for a final check of gaps ect and all looked great. Ran out of time for the week bu will get more in next week as the weather gets better. Here are some pics of the progress with several more to follow.

Last pic for now, it has the mocked up second try at matching the firewall on both sides, you can just barely see the line from the old try to to the new pieceslid down in behind.I forgot to get a side pic of but will to show the it looks almost like it was there from the start. I think it will turn out nice and be very rigid.

Everything is/will be pre fit, thanks for the reminder. Rick the bodyguy is making those calls I just pimp the tools for him and do some welding and grinding and a little shaping here and there. A little progress to report. We have gotten the PS inner rocker tacked in and the small floor patch tacked in place as well. Notice my custom made inner rocker, the inner rocker patch panel didn't have enough metal on it to repair the section of floor I needed at the same time. A local hvac shop mocked it up and Rick massaged it to fit perfectly, even forming the little spot in the patch to match the floor:metal: I also have made my last pass with the welder(4th and final:rolleyes: ) and just need to grind a few small spots down and the shaving of the rear cab seam will be done:metal: Also made the final adjustments to the panel I am using to shave the heater blower motor spot and to match the DS of the firewall. Rick took it to work today to blast it clean and I will start welding it in tonight! The plan is to get the PS inner rocker, and floor patch welded in tonight and try to get the rocker on and mocked up to mark holes for spot welds, and maybe hang the door, but that is pushing it.Here are a few pics of the progress and hopefully more in a day or two...

Not too far, are you in evansville?

A little more progress tonight, got the PS inner rocker and floor welded, but still need to clean them up. Also got the blower motor area shaved out with the piece I made out of the scraps from an old cab. It s about 3/8" too short on the outside edge when compared to the DS, but still looks clean none the less, and shouldn't be noticable once the fenders and hindges are in place. I also go the gaps set and straight on the DS door along the window post, the rest of the door is where it needs to be. It was a little too tight for about the last 6" of the top of the door, as well as the first inch or two from the bottom of the window frame. Will need to be welded up the upper portion as it needed to be ground more than the thickness of the skin, very minor. A few more pics....

No,I'm about an hour north of Evansville, still fairly close though considering there isnt many members here locally.....and since you do such a good job doing body work, you can come over and do some work on the cab for my 71:lol:

Body work, me??  Rick IS the real bodyman, I am just his helper;) . I have done some of it,(mostly welding) and not to say I'm terrible at it, Rick is just SOOOOO much better//faster with his almost 30 years experience. He has been a blessing, making the build much more enjoyable, and great experience for me as well:metal:
