I got a wireless router for my daughter to take to college this year. I got a Linksys WRT54G. What I want to know is can I hook it up,get it running & have everything going on my cable internet & then take it up to her apt. where thay will have Qwest(phone company)DSL? The internet service will not be hooked up when we move her up there & I was hoping I can get it set up here & they can hook it up when they get service. There will be 4 girls using it there & none of them are computer savy.

DSL is going to be a little different. If it was just a PC and the DSL modem then you would be good to go but when you throw a Router in the mix it gets a little hairy. My mother switched to DSL from cable (switched back 6 months later) and we had to go into her modem and router and change some settings. Basically you have to feed your DSL user name and pass into the router and tell the modem whats going on. Maybe someone who has done this recently can chime in. I may be able to paste together a tutorial later this evening.

Each provider is different - so required setup between your place and her place could be different. I would suggest taking it to her place and setting it up there - if you use the easy install CD that came with the device, it should be easy. I highly recommend setting up wireless security on the device - preferably "WPA" or "WPA2", but if you have no other alternative, WEP will work, it just has some flaws in it that let computer-savvy people use her internet if they can manage to use those flaws to get the WEP pass phrase.
More info on setting up WPA for the WRT54G is possibly linked up at the top of this forum - not 100% sure on that - I can provide link if necessary.
