Well.. My CD player on my puter is crap which is no surprise since the puter was so cheap. Its under warranty but the work involved in getting it replaced isnt worth it since its only a CD player/burner. It doesnt have a DVD player so I want to get a combo unit. I looked at Newegg and found this :

http://www.newegg.com/product/Product.asp?item=N82E16827131031

its a SONY Black 16X DVD+R 8X DVD+RW 8X DVD+R DL 16X DVD-R 6X DVD-RW 16X DVD-ROM 48X CD-R 24X CD-RW 48X CD-ROM 2M Cache IDE DVD Burner - OEM for $30.00.

Its for a Compaq Presario SR1703WM

Is this CD/DVD gonna be compatible with my system and do you think I'll need a new driver? If yall have any better ideas on a CD/DVD player I'll listen but my budget is VERY limited and the reviews were 99 percent positive.

Ive put a few dozen computers together and I use LiteOn (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16827106013) every time with no complaints so far. Ive got 2 in my desktop and they both work great. I would recommend going with the "retail" package as you will get the drivers, a copy of Nero and the audio cable.

Be careful with Lite-On, they subbed out a lot of their work to others in recent years so you never really know what you might be getting.

I use NEC burners, normally the 3500-series. Here's a link:

That Sony burner isn't bad at all. All of these ATAPI/IDE drives should work with your computer, I assume. I don't see why not. Most of the "professional" burners go with Pioneer's units though. I do not buy anything except NEC myself...and I hang out in a certain forum that is dedicated to sharing and burning DVD's for all kinds of purposes...all of my choices come from what I've learned there and personal experience with various brands.

I agree with Shifty on this one ... I have used LiteOn, NEC and Pioneer ... and the NEC is the best one I have tried so far.

I have 2 of the NEC 3550's in my tower ... quiet ... bullet proof ... tons of "hacked" firmware available ... and best of all, they aren't picky when it comes to DVD media ... although I only use Taiyo Yuden (more expensive) I have used everything from Staples brand to Memorex (both cheap) and the NEC's take them with minimal "coasters."

I can't say the same for the Pioneer or the LiteOn.
