View Full Version : Why are there so many members that only have one post and are basically inactive
jsbgump 09-14-2006, 07:42 AM I have noticed looking through the member list that there are a bunch of members that have only a couple of post that haven't posted in years. Why are they still listed as members? I would think that the mods could delete the inactive member that havent been on in say a year or more to regain som extra space for the board. Just a thought I had.
We had thought the same a while back. No sooner had we discussed it, did we have a few members from 2000 ish email saying the didnt know their password or such and could we help them out so they could post. That being said, we looked into user activity and found there is a large amount of "read only" members who have been here for years. So the accounts have been left as is. I'd hate to see anyone lose their membership for not posting frequently.
I am sure there are alot of members who moved on or came for one question, but how do you decide who is here and who isn't then? It would not be fair to someone to off their account, if they are still here.
ChevyCrazy67 09-14-2006, 09:08 PM It probably would never work, but what if there was some way to get the members that do decide to move on to notify the mods they are doing so? By pm or some other method, it would have to be something non complicated to get everyone leaving to do so. Then later if they decided to come back they could re-register.
Although I'm sure not everyone would take the time to do this, maybe some would and that could free up some space. Just me thinking out loud.
jsbgump 09-14-2006, 10:12 PM Thanks Liz I kinda thought that was the reason just seemed strange since i have seen a couple with no activity in over a year.
thing is, it doesnt show activity persay, but last actual log in. Also if you choose invisible mode, it shows you as not active as well. So it might appear one isn't active when they are.
I agree there are alot who are not, its just about impossible to tell who is and isnt tho if they dont post.
shadetree 09-15-2006, 12:45 AM I still have membership in a few other Chevy orginations. I don't post there, much, but I do enjoy going to the sites, and compare. This site rocks, and I want to support Liz and Josh on the desicion to allow old memberships to stand.

N2TRUX 10-05-2006, 11:08 PM I am a moderator of a forum that I rarely visit. I am a member on hundreds of forums that I never visit. I may not be "helping" those forums but am not "hurting" anything if I never post again.
My thoughts are does it really matter?
71SWBChevy 10-11-2006, 08:31 PM The only thing I could see it helping is freeing up some usernames that are currently taken but not used at all, I think that is what JSB was thinking to. I agree it would be very hard to decide who to off and who not to off, I personally have just started going back to a forum I joined two years ago as I have gotten back in the skeet shooting a little more lately and I was relieved to find that my old name and password still worked so it didn't look like I was just "one of the new guys" I think it is best to just leave it alone and I seriously doubt that anyone would actually PM or E-mail the forum staff when they left.
1LoC10 10-11-2006, 09:00 PM I dont think its that they are inconsiderate.. its more that people just move on to other things after time... I know there is some old forums I use to be on and dont go anymore... it wasnt just one day I said well im done here, to be able to tell anyone I wouldnt be back.. you just kind of stray away adn move on

That is a good point, I don't know why I said they were inconsiderate, I have done the samething and I see no reason why people should contact the staff when they leave, like you said its not something you wake up and decided to never go back, its a gradually change that happens over time, not a concious decision.
1LoC10 10-12-2006, 12:10 PM I do think that maybe after a year of inactivity, there should be a email sent or something saying your user name will expire or something.. I dunno... Im sure there is alot of names people would like to use that are takin
We do send out periodic newsletters and such. Most of the time when we do you have a major surge of non posting members visit as well.

I have had to stray away because of being in the Military and having to deploy. That is why I go away allot. I always come back. This is a nice site. I am darn prowd to be a part of it. I do need to get more involved, like pay my dues.
