When specifying sheetmetal thickness you US guys are using "Gauge", an not inches, and we from the rest of the world understands nothing, at least the goes for me.

Is there any conversion table available that converts gauge to inches, or even better to metrics?

It would make it much easier to understand wich actual thicknesses that are actually used.

You want to use the Brown & Sharpe Wire Gauge (B&S). it is for wire, sheet or plate and strip steel both cold rolled and hot rolled.

I hope this helps.
