I just bought a new DVD Burner for my comp. The computer only had a CD Burner on it before I bought the DVD. Ive got it installed correctly as far as I know and CDs play great..sound great, much better than on the old one. When I tried to play a DVD it told me I needed a DVD Decoder.

Is this decoder Hardware? Software? I ran into this site:

http://www.cyberlink.com/winxp_plugin/2006/enu/xp_plugin.jsp#3

It appears to be software but I know nuttin... I dont wanna screw something up. What do I need to play the videos?

It's called a codec and its software. If you buy a computer with a DVD player/recorder then it's installed already. If you didn't then Windows Media Player doesn't have the instructions (codec) to play DVD's. You can buy a version of cyberlink or find someone with a loaner. Once it's on your system then you could use cyberlink or windows media player to watch DVD's. let me know if you need help. msgross@hotmail.com

I downloaded a Codec from www.free-codec.com per msgross suggestion that I needed one. I always try to look and see if my question had been answered before in another thread ans sure enough it was ..here http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/showpost.php?p=1803128&postcount=2

I found what I needed although I was quite nervous in doing it. It still said it wouldnt play in QuickTime or Real Player (real player said the encoder wouldnt give permission) but I got it to play in "Media Player Classic" so far it played one. If I have any problems Ill let you guys know. Big Thanks to Both of You!

realplayer and quicktime don't play well with others... If you don't use their products then you are out of luck...

Glad to hear that a free download worked. I dabble with computers a little but one of my employees moonlights with them as a side job. I can get about any items that I need from him, most legit and legal.... take care.

I like media player classic.

I recommend the free-codecs site all the time - their codec packs are second to none - and it's so nice to play Realplayer and Quicktime files without installing Real or Apple's bloated ass software to do so!

Meanwhile, you have PM :)
