When typing numbers into fractions (3/4, 1/2, etc.) how do I make it so that Word will automatically reduce the overall size so they fit into the space of 1 character instead of taking the space of 3?

Slonaker 09-20-2006, 01:05 AM Some will convert automatically using autocorrect function. Type 1/4 and autocorrect will change it to ¼. There are also some other common fractions available if you choose "symbol" from the "insert" menu. I suspect you could add any common fractions that are available as symbols to your autocorrect options (look under "tools" and choose "autocorrect options"). Slonaker Brad 09-20-2006, 02:38 AM That helped-thanks!:) I was adding T immediately after the fraction and it didn't recognize what I wanted to do, but I figured out how to make it work. I just add a space inbetween, then click somewhere else in the text then go back and delete the space and the smaller fraction remains! shifty 09-20-2006, 02:29 PM alternately, if you can remember this stuff (i have it all memorized), you can make special characters using the numeric keypad on your laptop with a Windows system. for example, if you run windows, you can do the following: Press and hold the ALT key, while holding it press 0188 on the numeric keypad, then release the ALT key. It should generate a ¼ symbol. Basically, by changing the 3- or 4-digit number, you create different symbols which are in the character map for the default font, if I remember correctly. So....some examples: 0176 = ° (degrees) 0178 = ² 0179 = ³ 0186 = º (superscript 0) 0188 = ¼ 0189 = ½ 0190 = ¾ 0181 = µ 0191 = ¿ 0169 = © 0174 = ® 0241 = ñ It's important to use the '0' in there also :) Example: 188 = ╝ 0188 = ¼ You must hold down the ALT key while typing these and you must use the numeric keypad - the normal row of numbers above the keyboard does NOT work :) I recognize you're doing this in Word and it will auto-resize it properly ... I'm just giving you an alternate in case you're working with a program that is not so nice. I have a lot of this crap memorized from using it for so many years with various things. I learned this in chat like ... 10-12 years ago. Not many people know about it, apparently. It just sucks you can't do 1/3's or 1/8's ;) |
