OK, OK, i know Outlook Express as an e-mail vehicle really sucks but untill I can convert all my files over to Yahoo~~~I have this problem. I use "ISP" as my Internet Service Provider --it's cheap and their real time service support used to be free but now they charge for it and I am growing dismayed!! Anyhoo, When I sign on with my laptop, I get on line but when I go to check my mail in Outlook Express, it acts like I am not signed on and requires me to sign on a second time (like it is not recognizing that I am already signed on). Is there some setting I need to change as this drives me nuts expecially when I am on the road and am using different phone numbers depending where I am.
Do you have a recommendation of a simple ISP with simple e-mail as I need simple solutions to my usage. I had AOL for years but got over run with their stupid pop'ups and advertising. Thanks~~~Huck

You could try a gmail account instead of yahoo. I believe they are still calling it a beta, but it works quite well and offers LOTS of storage.

You could also register your own domain. A package offering just mail can be had for about a dollar a month. If you want a small website, it goes up to 3 or 4 dollars per month. Look into 1and1.com, godaddy.com, or other hosts if you are interested in doing that. BTW, huckstrucks.com is available. :)

No suggestions for an ISP offering dialup, and no solution to your OE problem...

So, let me get this straight - when you open Outlook Express, it tries to connect you to the web while you are already connected to the web? Or is it simply asking you for a username and password?

If so, the most common cause for this is as follows:

Open OE (outlook express).

From the Tools menu, choose Accounts. Click the Mail tab. Highlight each account listed and choose Properties button (to the right), click the Connection tab, and make sure the only button on that connections tab is UNchecked. If it is not, please UNcheck it and save the changes. Make sure you do it for each account in the list.

From the Tools menu, select Options. Choose the Connections Tab. Click on the Change button under Internet Connection Settings. Set the radio button to "dial whenever a connection is not present". Apply the changes and choose Ok. Close the Options window.

If I misunderstood you and it's only looking for a username and password when you check your email, try using the info two paragraphs up to go into the account properties, re-type your password in for the accounts (in the Accounts "Server" tab) and ask it to "remember password".

Oh - and for simple ISP with simple email ... doesn't exist :) I would avoid the PeoplePC/NetZero stuff, it's awful. Juno is, I think, part of the same group, their email used to be simple. You can pretty much put all three of these guys in the same group (same entity, I think), same services, same general setup.

Compuserve and AOL are essentially the same entity.

Earthlink and Bellsouth offer pretty easy dialup services these days. Email and other things are pretty simple. Most local phone companies offer dialup. It's gonna be around $15/month though.

Hell, I can get a basic DSL package here for around $20/month, which is cheaper than AOL's dialup package

Yea, DSL would be nice but our locations does not have the phone lines in place to support it. We have bellsouth phone service but they do not offer DSL here---. This is wierd cause I know a lot "boonier" locations that do.
OK back to the main issue--I think you understand my issue with Outlook Express requiring me to sign on to the internet twice so I will go off with your directions to see what happens---and will advise upon completion.

Ok. Meanwhile, if you want simple internet, I would talk to the people at Bellsouth, to be honest. Ask them what their plans are and let them know you're interested in Bellsouth DSL, but it's not offered in your area - ask them if you can get a discount while you "wait for the lines to be provisioned/conditioned for DSL" or something.

When dealing with telco providers, it is always a good idea to never accept what they hand you flat out - most internet providers have signup deals where you can get X months for half price or something similar.

If Bellsouth doesn't want to hook you up, or offer you a discount for bundling it with your current phone services, then let the rep know you're going to call Earthlink and a couple of other ISP's to see what they have to offer for you.

Gotcha---and by the way, this note is coming from my Laptop which for the first time in 6 months, allowed me to get onto Outlook Express with double log in so your recommendation was right on the money!!TKS<TKS<TKS
RE bellsouth, yea I am familiar in dealing with the phone companies. After 32 years in IBM we often had customers with communication problems that we would ring out with our technology only to find phone company performance issues--rather then putting the customer in the middle, we would make the call, tell them exactly what was wrong with their lines (wich they would always deny) and mysterely the problem would go away in about 20 minutes every time!!! DA~~~
Will look into bellsouth and Earthlink--I do kind of like the simplicity of Yahoo mail ---and believe I can work Yahoo as my mail vehicle and use any ISP as my internet access~~~.
