View Full Version : are energy drinks bad for you? >X< 09-24-2006, 11:47 AM they are a big part of my life. worked 19 hours yesterday and probably going to do the same today. any health side effects from drinking too much energy drinks? shifty 09-24-2006, 12:02 PM Most brands contain caffeine, which increases the excretion of calcium by the kidneys, leaving less to be incorporated into bones. Colas also contain phosphoric acid, which may lower blood levels of calcium by interfering with normal metabolism of the mineral. This affects women more than men, so it might matter for you - I just remember a big stink about all this a couple of years ago, they were/are expecting a huge bought with Osteoperosis in women over hte next couple of decades because of our overconsumption of carbonated soft drinks. http://www.athleticadvisor.com/Weight_Room/Energy_drinks.htm http://energydrinks.factexpert.com/885-energy-drinks-side-effects.php http://www1.drugaware.com.au/pages/caffeine_10.asp A couple of link syou might find informative. Hell, here's a good one from Gatorade which you may find useful, full of lots of tech info: http://www.gssiweb.com/reflib/refs/310/ENERGY_DRINKS_3-12-02.cfm?pf=1&CFID=4883428&CFTOKEN=89813981 .... Shane 09-24-2006, 12:09 PM anything that keeps you "pumped up" and going long after your body tells you it needs rest can't be healthy. full foot notch 09-24-2006, 12:23 PM im guessing with sustained use, kidney problems and possible diabetes depending on the sugar levels bouncytruck 09-24-2006, 12:24 PM They are also mostly "empty" calories- loaded with sugar and caffeine to keep you "up." The "diet" versions contain artificial sweeteners. The long term effects of these are just starting to come to light. Overall, they certainly aren't good for you and the are expensive. >X< 09-24-2006, 12:42 PM the only ones i drink are Sobe (more fruit and less sugar than others) i figured it was hard on the kidneys, but i think i killed those a long time ago hahaha. i just dont want my heart to explode or brain to fry when i go on these 3 day work binges krue 09-24-2006, 12:58 PM Friend of mine is a nurse in a school district, says the kids drinking the energy drinks are walking around with "resting" heart rates of 100-130 which is high (60 is a good number for a fit young person.) shifty 09-24-2006, 01:03 PM Oh yeah - because these things concentrate salts and calcium in your kindeys, kidney stones are a wonderful side effect. If you eat greens (collard/turnip/mustard/spinach) and other things high in oxalates, and you're drinking these drinks on top of it, prepare for some fun with stones - take it from a guy who gets them regularly - it's no fun :) PS - one or two of the common artificial sweeteners are diuretics and if you intake a lot of them, you will be hershey squirtin' :) BillGent 09-24-2006, 01:34 PM Oh yeah - because these things concentrate salts and calcium in your kindeys, kidney stones are a wonderful side effect. You just add the little tube of powder to 20oz of water. Google it and go to the website for all the info. This stuff is actually supposed to be good for you. I kept hearing about it on the radio and one day there was a HUMMER parked next to a building I was working at that had the car wrap Zipfizz add on it. I asked the driver where I could get some to try and she gave me a bunch of em. I used to drink alot of Mt Dew everyday, couple of super big gulps and two or three 20oz bottles. I was looking for a replacement and this stuff tastes pretty good and gives me a bit of a bump up. Ive tried other drinks but they all just taste nasty to me. Just a thought, im no health expert and dont play one on the internet. Good luck. shifty 09-24-2006, 01:56 PM There was something like that at one of the places I linked earlier called "Energy Fizz": http://energydrinks.factexpert.com/1467-energy-fizz.php Seems to be the same concept and gets good reviews. full foot notch 09-24-2006, 02:04 PM google the new energy drink "Cocaine" right now only being sold in NY and CA, quite interesting obsesive23 09-24-2006, 07:48 PM Can you say kidney stones? They say that to much of any form of B complex can cause this. Read some of the energy drinks I've seen some as high as 4000% of a daily allowance. bouncytruck 09-24-2006, 08:15 PM Caffeine is a diuretic too. Sounds like the combonation will keep ya on the crapper. LUV2XCLR8 09-24-2006, 10:47 PM This is some interesting sh!t, I'm scared to drink anything now  97silv5.7 09-24-2006, 10:52 PM yea I was drinking a lot of maountain dew at work I stopped and switched to koolaid I notice now when I drink a lot of soda I get real irritable... weird longhorn70gmc 09-25-2006, 12:05 AM I wouldn't drink more then two or three a week. prairewolf 09-25-2006, 03:45 AM too much sugar or artificials is not good for a kid. i am just an older version of a kid. i quit most of the junk, except coffee mentally and physically i feel 20yrs old again. (most days) i am 42. i am fairly selective on the fuel i run on now. A diet coke here and there is actually a treat now instead of a staple in my diet. great topic, life is good, kent 70rs/ss 09-25-2006, 04:32 PM Mt Dew, liquid motivator!! I live on it, and cannot comprehend a day without, I probably couldn't get out of bed!! I am working w/ a Dr to get my energy level up with a series of Blood tests to see where I am and where I need to go, I am guessing Mt Dew and BOOKOO are not to be a part of it!! shifty 09-25-2006, 05:08 PM i quit most of the junk, except coffee mentally and physically i feel 20yrs old again. (most days) ... A diet coke here and there is actually a treat now instead of a staple in my diet. ditto. diet Barq's is my poison of choice. That and Diet Dr. Pepper taste like the real thing. this new Coke Zero is the same way. Fresca drinks aren't too bad either. nothing beats all the killer new flavored waters coming out now. i really dig the Aquafina citrust Flavorsplash stuff. rocks socks. either way - i quit drinking the Dew, Nestea in the can and the Dr Pepper a long time ago (drank 3-4 a day), lost 20lbs and energy level/stamina is hella better. JoetheMobster 09-26-2006, 12:41 AM I haven't drank soda for a long time now. Hell, I have never tried an "energy" drink - even though I see tons everywhere. I mostly drink Chinese green tea, with the odd cup of decaf coffee every once in a while. I find now that caffeine reacts differently with me now then it did when I was younger. I used to be able to swill back pots of coffee. Now one cup of caffeinated stuff and I have the jitters, and I actually feel kind of ill afterward. I drink at least two cups of Chinese green tea a day though - my drink of choice. shifty 09-26-2006, 01:01 AM Glad someone else is fessing up to this coffee thing too, it's good to hear. When I was in high school and college, we would go to Dennys and get the bottomless cup of coffee, drink 5-10 cups and be alright. Now, I drink one shot of espresso or a full cup of coffee and I'm speeding my balls off (worse than some drugs I've done) and I crash about an hour later :\ But I also cut caffeine (caf-feind) out of my diet totally, and haven't drank coffee regularly for almost 10 years. I wonder if that has something to do with it? full foot notch 09-26-2006, 01:23 AM never drank coffee, puts me to sleep cause of ADHD, like a big dose of ritalin, i wake up in the morning with orange juice(shameless FL product plug) or milk, hate coffee bouncytruck 09-26-2006, 11:03 AM FYI, drip coffee contains 2-3 times the caffeine as a shot of espresso. The water is in contact with the ground beans much longer in drip than espresso drawing out greater amounts of caffeine (my wife works for Starbucks, 7 years as a store manager and 2 years in the corporate offices). 70rs/ss 09-26-2006, 11:27 AM (my wife works for Starbucks, 7 years as a store manager and 2 years in the corporate offices). My X's older sister works in corporate, she started when they were peddling beans way back. Yeah, she is now a richy B*@ch, well I guess the B part ran in the family! boraxman 09-26-2006, 11:46 AM This thread is making me thirsty for a Yeager-Bomb. 1 Shot glass Yeagermiester(sp?) dropped in a cup of Red Bull and drank down fast:barn: TRUCKGUY 09-26-2006, 10:28 PM Ok this page is now bookmarked... my brother drinks them things alot been telling him they were bad for him may print all of this off and show to a couple people.....anyways very intresting. |
