I have the stock '72 wiring harness for my alternator and external voltage regulator. Today the amp gauge says my system isn't charging- it shows a discharge. I have been using an after market 100 amp alterator and this seeming has worked well for a couple of years. I replaced the alternator - no luck. I replaced the voltage regulator - no luck. My next effort is to replace the alternator wiring harness to fix any 35 year old problems. But, since this is my daily driver as well, I need to get it back on the road quickly. I could use a temporary fix until I get a new harness. Have any of you had a similar issue and could point to some quick fixes that saved you? If a fusible link is blown - how do you know visually? Or can you? thanks for any help. goose:confused:

did you confirm that it is in fact not charging? Or are you gust going by the 35 year old guage?

I have actually confirmed it is not charging. Nothing coming from the alternator.

Is there 12v at the brown wire at the regulator when the key gets turned on?

You may also want to check the fuses at the core support corners

those fuses are just for the guage, if they are blown, it won't keep the truck from charging.

Thanks pad'ners.. appreciate the help. Found the bad actor. It was a corroded old splice in the battery wire that runs from the alternator to the voltage regulator. Better get me a new harness, who knows how many other bad wires there might be. Thanks again.

sweet.
Was it that big mess of like, 4 10 guage wires all crimped together?
I never could understand that mess.

Here is a little about it from Mad Electric.

I have to say I never understood that mess either until reading that mad electrical website.

VetteVet, thanks for that link.

You're welcome Shadetree and if you go to the Mad electric home page there is a technical button which will take you to many other pages including the one I posted. They have an awesome site. Thank goodness for broadband.

I just love them old electrical systems!

I literally spent MONTHS troubleshooting an electrical problem in my 92 vette :Own:

(It was actually the ECM, and I found out the ECM has no code for a faulty ECM):banghead:

:alky:
