View Full Version : Can’t uninstall McAfee Security Center
ChevyTech 10-03-2006, 08:53 AM I am out of town on vacation trying to help a relative remove their McAfee Security Center that came on the dell system they bought this past June. It must have been a trail version. Their 90 days of free support from dell has expired.
When I go to the control panel – add/remove programs, there is no McAfee anything to click on to uninstall/remove it.
I went to the McAfee web site and downloaded removal tools for the Spam blocker, anti-virus and firewall and the tools did uninstall those components of the Security Center. The security Center is still giving pop-ups to buy a renewal. I have been unable to find anything that addresses the removal of the security center when there is nothing to click on in the control panel add/remove program area.
Any help would be appreciated.
shifty 10-03-2006, 11:16 AM Not a problem. When you look in the START menu, under "All Programs", do you see any Mcafee related items in there? Sometimes there will be an Uninstall link in there. See my attached picture.
If there is no option like that, please download Hijackthis. Here is a link:
http://www.filehippo.com/download/file/37669e05fb61ab28ee3dbad93c7d21f5c3c83eaa0315b37eb40cbbff1328ef5e/
Download the file to somewhere safe on the computer. Run it, and choose "Scan and Save Logfile". Copy and paste the logfile into a post here and I will tell you what to do to stop it from loading at boot and effectively "remove" it.
ChevyTech 10-03-2006, 01:46 PM When you look in the START menu, under "All Programs", do you see any Mcafee related items in there? Sometimes there will be an Uninstall link in there. See my attached picture. It does show McAfee and the only thing it shows in it is the Security Center. There is no uninstall or anything else
Thank you Shifty. Here is what it logged.

shifty 10-03-2006, 02:24 PM Ouch, this is bad. They have a backdoor on their machine also. More info:
http://vil.nai.com/vil/content/v_102355.htm
We'll get rid of that also, using Hijackthis.
Print out this page on that Dell printer, because you'll need to close every open program, including this browser window in a sec.
Close all open programs.
Open Hijackthis.
Choose "SCAN ONLY".
Put a checkmark next to all of these lines:

Once you check all of them off, doublecheck to make sure you got all of them, then please press the "FIX" button in Hijackthis.
Reboot the computer.
Open Hijackthis again and choose "Scan only". Make sure none of the items above reappear. If they do, please repeat this last removal step again and reboot.
If they don't go away after that second reboot, post another Hiajckthis logfile.
Once you're done, please let me know, I have some more instructions to follow.
ChevyTech 10-03-2006, 03:55 PM Thank you for helping shifty.
On the first try the first four were removed but after three attempts the last four will not remove/delete.
Here are the four that are still there:

shifty 10-03-2006, 04:20 PM Ok, we will do it the hard way. Well, I'll do it the easiest possible hard way for your sake. ;)
Click to the Start menu, go to All Programs list, look in the Accessories section and click on Command Prompt. This will open up a little black window with a blinking cursor like you see below.
Next, use your mouse to highlight and copy this bolded command (press CTRL+C when highlighted to copy):
sc query >> C:\services.txt
Next, go back to the black window (Command Prompt) again, right-click (right mouse button) the title bar (see red spot below for title bar) and choose Edit>Paste as shown.
This should dump the command where the blinking cursor is. When that happens, press ENTER.
This will create a file on the hard drive at C:\services.txt - please find and open that file and copy/paste the contents into this post. I will give you a list of commands to run to manually kill those McAfee services, since they want to be a massive pain in the ass :)
ChevyTech 10-03-2006, 04:39 PM Ok, I did it three times because it expected the wrong thing to happen. Here (I think) it is.
When I tryed to post the result I got this message;
The text that you have entered is too long (95430 characters). Please shorten it to 50000 characters long.
I deleted from the end untill it will post.
Edit: I deleted much of this because it was repeating the same thing over and over.

shifty 10-03-2006, 04:55 PM Well, it gave me what I wanted to know. I couldn't believe that the service 'name' would really have a '.exe' in it like the HJT log shows, but I'll be damned - it does.
Okay.
From that black Command Prompt window, type in these four individual commands (or copy/paste like before), pressing ENTER after each command:
sc delete McDetect.exe
sc delete McTskshd.exe
sc delete McShield
sc delete mcupdmgr.exe
Based on the log you just pasted, it might complain "no such service" or some crap like that, but ... Finish all the commands above, reboot the computer and post me one more Hijackthis log.
Sorry this is stretching out so long. McAfee really left the comptuer a mess. I just want to make sure it's properly cleaned up so it won't cause problems later. Leftover services like this DO tend to cause problems, so ... nuking them is the way to go.
ChevyTech 10-03-2006, 05:07 PM Thank you so much for helping. It seems to have worked.

watahyahknow 10-03-2006, 05:08 PM think there afraid you reinstall the trailversion twice .
all this stuff goes far beyond my knowledge of computers i know just enough to build them and keep em running and not to download suspicious files
shifty 10-03-2006, 05:27 PM Ok, final steps leftover here:
Delete this folder and all of its contents:
c:\PROGRAM FILES\mcafee.com
(NOTE!!: only delete the mcafee.com folder, DO NOT delete the entire Program Files folder!!)
Look inside the C:\PROGRAM FILES\Common Files\ folder and see if there is anything pertaining to McAfee.
(NOTE!!: only delete a folder with the name 'mcafee' in it, DO NOT delete the entire Common Files folder!!)
This will get 99% of McAfee totally off the system and you should never need to worry about it again.
Good job on following the directions. Thanks for hanging in there - this is a VERY odd one to need to deal with and very few people know how to properly clean up after something like this happens :D I have seen several other cases of McAfee leaving services behind like that.
ChevyTech 10-03-2006, 05:41 PM This ChevyTech's sister-in-law. Thanks so much for helping get that annoying McAfee off the computer. We deleted the McAfee.com file folder and that is all that we could find. It seems to be repaired.
ChevyTech says thank you very much also.
shifty 10-03-2006, 06:08 PM You're welcome :)
