IvelDesigns 05-14-2008, 01:11 AM it's a good thing my wife doesn't read these forums....
I just got off the phone with the paint supply store... on top of the $200 i spent on primer for just the front clip, it's gonna be another 700 bucks for paint and clear. about double what i was hoping for, but it's getting done damn it! :)
also, i'm not going hugger now, mostly due to cost. Monza Red is the color now. after putting a paint chip up to the inside of my fender with good light, it's clear what the color is.
I'll post an update and pics tonight of the work that was done this weekend.
Bob 68327 05-15-2008, 06:10 AM New Pics ??? Can't wait to see it done !! Gonna be Great !!:metal: Bob
IvelDesigns 05-15-2008, 06:20 AM having some issues with photoshop, so the pics will be coming soon.
nothing really to show from last weekend other than the gas tank getting mounted and plumbed, and a boat load of sanding.
this weekend... heh, i get giddy just thinking about what's happening this weekend.
lets just say, i'll be doing a lot of standing around "watching paint dry". i can't wait!!
Bob 68327 05-15-2008, 06:25 AM Right On Man !! Can't wait to see it !!! Bob
lurch115 05-16-2008, 06:04 AM okay...i'll make an update with some pics...you've all seen the pictures of the what the motor looked like before we pulled it and now i have a few pics of it almost completely put back togeather.....
and if i do say so myself i think the motor looks like it should run ALOT better since the timing chain had almost 4 degrees slop in it and few other things here and there....i'll have some more of the "replaced" parts later
lurch115 05-16-2008, 06:40 AM okay so here goes....sorry that most of the pics are blury...crappy camera and kinda tired...anyways...i'll start off with the major issue..
first was the timing chain, which as you have read was toast. I have never seen a chain this worn out not jump time before...(note the grooves in the the cam gear as it was a factory gear that was supose to have smooth teeth)
and as for the broken bolt. when i was installing the new timing set i was down to torquing the last of three bolts when all of a sudden (at about 10 ft. lbs.) SNAP! broke off flush with the end of the cam. needless to say, my jaw hit the floor. luckly alls it took as a punch and a light tap with a hammer and it backed out...
lurch115 05-16-2008, 06:44 AM and the next major issue was the old rivet style balancer....ended up having to (persuade) it a little to get it to come loose. that was after i drill the three bolt holes all the way through so i could put nuts on the back side since it pulled all the threads out. Not to meantion it was basically toast anyways
lurch115 05-16-2008, 06:50 AM oh, and don't forget the main reason we desided to pull the motor and "refresh" it a bit....the freakin' thing leaked like no other....the main reason was the rear main seal (no picture) and the other reason was the front pan seal....the picture shows why...
the push rods were replaced with some slightly used ones as these 3 were cracked over halfway through and on the verge of breaking...caused by rust pitting and then stress
lurch115 05-16-2008, 07:00 AM last series of pics for replaced engine parts i promise...
the first picture is of the valve covers, timing cover and oil pump. Ivel wanted some chrome so he got chrome valve covers and timing chain cover. the oil pump we replaced because it wasn't a costly item (around $20) and i was gonna have to pull it off while replacing the rear main anyways..
the oil pump drive shaft was replaced mainly because it was a $6 item and also because of the fact that when i turned the motor over on the stand it fell out due to the nylon lock ring being split in several places.
the last picture is of all the bolts that mainly weren't needed...the timing cover came with new chrome bolts and the one piece oil pan gasket (which as cake to install) also came with new pan bolts.... as for the acorn nut covers....they looked retarded on the motor and neither Ivel nor myself were a big fan of them...
okay, that should be it! i promise!
IvelDesigns 05-16-2008, 07:14 AM *happy dance*
looks like i need a chrome fuel pump now. and an edelbrok intake. and a 4 bbl carb, and, , and and...
i better just stick with where it's at right now.
she sure does look pretty... thanks for doing this for me man.
IvelDesigns 05-17-2008, 07:36 AM i got word tonight that the clip has primer on it. i'm heading up there early tomorrow morning to wrap up the final prep before paint on saturday.
IvelDesigns 05-18-2008, 08:07 AM *start playing eye of the tiger*
it's 12:30am. the second coat of build primer is getting sprayed right now. 2 hour cure time before wet sanding. we'll be at the paint booth @ 7am ready to go.
*cross fingers*
IvelDesigns 05-18-2008, 10:27 AM 2:45am...
clip and tailgate are done with sanding... now to tackle... everything else...
zzzzzz.....zzzzz...
!! break's over!!
back to work i go!
jeffspower 05-18-2008, 02:47 PM It's 7:05 am and I do I smell fresh paint? :mm:
Palf70Step 05-19-2008, 12:04 AM Tease!!!!! :D
It's 4:20ish, where the pictures dude! ;)
IvelDesigns 05-19-2008, 03:49 AM i'm a tease... and it's gonna continue for tonight cause my feet are killing me and i don't want to go get the camera :)
so i finished sanding the truck at 4:15am and came into the house. i got about 1.5 hrs sleep before my dad woke me up to go @ 6:15. i should have just stayed up and loaded up the truck, but the couch was comfy... i didn't even take my shoes off cause i wasn't really tired, and thought i'd get back up. but then again, the couch was comfy :)
so, we didn't make 7am, but we were there by 8:30. we got the bed off the truck and on to a cart so we could move it around, then the guys at the shop looked over my handy work. overall things looked good, but there were a few spots that needed more sanding. so, we sanded for about 4 hours or so, then started cleaning to get ready for paint around1pm.
btw, when i got up, my feet were really starting to hurt, so i wasn't moving to fast at all.
anyways, the paint started to fly around 1pm. we ended up with 3 coats of color and 3 coats of clear. only a couple mishaps during the whole ordeal that were easily fixed with some color sanding after the flash. the two big boo-boos of the day were when i went to tack everything off after color, before clear, i hit a wet spot on the grill. we set it aside to let it dry while we got started on the clear. they other was when i went to put the repair grill on the rack and tack it, i bumped the fender with my shirt. since it baredly touched it, and it had 3 coats of clear on it, we left it and plan to wet sand it out. hopefully it all comes out.
the pics do look awesome, as does the truck. I'll have to wet sand the whole truck with 1500 and 2000, but that will have to wait until after the midwest meet. By waiting that long it will be harder to do, but it'll still happen.
tomorrow we'll put the bed on and haul it home where it will sit until next weekend.
then the marithon rebuild takes place.
FRENCHBLUE72 05-19-2008, 04:59 AM Cant wait to see it....

IvelDesigns 05-20-2008, 08:49 AM i don't think these pics really show the color well. they look more orangy than it really is. the color is "Monza Red" and was used on 69-70 vettes.
It is a very red red. i can't see how anyone could call it orange in person now.
Palf70Step 05-20-2008, 12:11 PM She looks good! :metal:
andrewt2 05-20-2008, 02:40 PM that looks amazing. now get home and start getting her back together im ready to see this one in person! on a side note... what did u use for straps to secure your fuel tank with and what kind of hose did you use for your fuel filler neck?
IvelDesigns 05-20-2008, 02:54 PM i used some 1/16th inch steel that i got from TSC and used a BFH to bend it into shape. I cut up an inner tube and put it between the straps and the tank. for the filler neck, i got a standard one from NAPA. It will get trimmed down once i cut a hole in the bed for the filler neck/cap
b&a72 05-20-2008, 06:06 PM Looks good! And by doing it yourself it probably saved you a load of cash, and from having to bail your truck out of bodyshop jail.
IvelDesigns 05-20-2008, 06:34 PM yeah, all i paid for was materials. total investment into getting the truck through body work and paint, around $1600.
so yeah, i'm happy from a cost standpoint to. This paint job should add considerable value if/when i decide to sell it. as with all things in life, everything has a price tag.
Bob 68327 05-21-2008, 02:46 AM Looks Good !!! Keep up the good work !!:metal: Bob
jeffspower 05-21-2008, 02:56 AM Gee thanks. Your gonna make my truck look like a basket case at the meet! :waah:
lurch115 05-21-2008, 06:13 AM Gee thanks. Your gonna make my truck look like a basket case at the meet! :waah:
mine too! lol and mine shines almost as much as his...but its got minor rust and a few light dents
zeropsi 05-22-2008, 03:49 PM Very nice truck!
lurch115 05-23-2008, 04:53 AM okay.. have a little bit more for an update....as i as getting ready to put the intake on tonight i desided i better pull the what i like to call a "carbon catch pan" off of the bottom of the intake....turned out that it was a good thing i did...if any of you have ever done this to an intake you probably understand why i call it what i do....and i ALWAYS reinstall them too... here are pictures that should give you an idea....all the black stuff on the tail gate is chunks of carbon that built up on the underside of the intake
lurch115 05-24-2008, 07:05 AM here is yet another update...the motor is done, just need to get the pictures of it...but here is a couple as it was almost finished... i keep looking at it and saying to myself... "no one will ever guess its only a little 283!"
andrewt2 05-24-2008, 02:37 PM Good looking motor! just remember levi make sure you save a little money to be able to afford the gas all the way to the meet and back it looks like your truck budget might be eating all that up! lol

heh, yeah, you could say that, x2.
thankfully my side business has been doing well these past few months.

i dont mean to pry but what do you do for truck money? for me i just justify spending 250 or so a month on the truck fund since i drive an old beeter daily and dont have a car payment.. plus i sell parts on the side when i can.
IvelDesigns 05-24-2008, 08:03 PM i build web sites for a living. the 9-5 job pays the bills, and the 7pm-2am job pays for the toys (and clears the CC debt).

CLEARS THE CC DEBIT MY BUTT, they just get racked up again on the truck, be honest we all know how it is! i imagine it would be nice to have some IT experience, i sell parts for a salvage yard and my jobs about a 7-to 7 job... the work around there is never done. but im trying to get motivated to go back to school! companies just know how to offer just enough money to hook you and make you stay!
jkaylor68gmc 05-24-2008, 09:04 PM great updates on the truck, it looks nice, I am subscribing.
jeffspower 05-25-2008, 12:56 AM Double hump heads? Doesn't that end up with the chamber "hanging over" the bore on a 283?
IvelDesigns 05-25-2008, 01:02 AM pretty sure they aren't dbl hump heads. i ran the casting numbers on them and they didn't come back as dbl hump.
jeffspower 05-25-2008, 01:06 AM Maybe my vision is fuzzy- but they sure do look like '69-'70 double humps.
IvelDesigns 05-25-2008, 10:03 AM well, the motor is in with a couple things hooked up, the grill is assembled. damn it looks nice! the letters are in the hood - what a pain in the ass! and the rest of the front frame has a fresh coat of POR 15 on it.
i have to say it's pretty sweet pulling up to my parents place and seeing a handful of cars there. especially when they are all in the garage working on something related to my truck. I owe a handful of people at least a nice steak dinner after this is all said and done, and probably a couple favors too.
tomorrow morning i'll make a run to the parts store to get some last minute items, then the rest will go together. I think it's an ambitious goal, but i think it will be running and nearly complete tomorrow night.
Tri-ProAutomotive 05-25-2008, 03:13 PM looking great Levi-
67_C-30 05-25-2008, 05:03 PM Double hump heads? Doesn't that end up with the chamber "hanging over" the bore on a 283?
No. The double humps have a small combustion chamber. They even came on Hi Perf Vette engines in the early 60's. Besides, there's tons of hopped up 305's out there running double humps, so if they work on the 3 3/4" bore of a 305, they would be no problems on the 3 7/8" bore of the 283.
67_C-30 05-25-2008, 05:10 PM BTW, I just looked back at the pics, and they are not double humps. Those are late 70's - early 80's 305 heads. The humps on a 69 -70 look much different.
jeffspower 05-25-2008, 06:20 PM BTW, I just looked back at the pics, and they are not double humps. Those are late 70's - early 80's 305 heads. The humps on a 69 -70 look much different. Learn something every day ;)
Done by tomorrow night? Now that's a great example of GIT-R-DONE
jeffspower 05-25-2008, 06:28 PM 67_C-30, I'm really confused now. The humps on the LH head in your pic look nothing like Levis. How many humpin head variations are there? :help:
I have a set of '63 300/327 heads on the '68 GMC. Easy to tell on those.
IvelDesigns 05-26-2008, 10:41 AM uhg... i had a fairly detailed post written, but then my wife checked her mail and it disappeared...
oh well... the truck is running under it's own power and sounds great. the clip is on and pretty much lined up. the hood latches, but it needs some adjustment to get it lined up better.
tomorrow it sounds like we might get hail, so my truck probably isn't leaving the garage for the test drive i had hoped, so i should have plenty of time to tie up the last few loose ends.
i have a craptastic amount of pics from the last two days that i'll post when i get home. my parents printer won't read my card and i forgot my cable at home.
maybe lurch can get some pics up for you guys tomorrow.
watahyahknow 05-26-2008, 04:35 PM great build just got round reading the 9 pages .
lurch115 05-27-2008, 03:42 AM i do have to say as the "engine builder" and seeing the truck put all back togeather that that is one damn nice looking, running and sounding truck man!
"hats off" to EVERYONE that helped with this project.... i know i'm proud to say that i had my hands in on this machine!
Bob 68327 05-27-2008, 05:44 AM Glad to hear you got it running !!!! Can't wait to see it!!! :metal:
IvelDesigns 05-27-2008, 07:59 AM well, like lurch said, it's on the road and running... really really well.
i just got back from a 30 mile trip with only one heart attack turned minor issue. i got on the interstate and looked down to see the temp gauge pegged. turned out to just be a temp wire touching a no-no spot on the header and shorting out.
anyways, tomorrow i'm heading home and will post up a boat load of pics then. if you're on dialup, get the hampsters some energy pills cause i took pics of just about everything.
including a few pics in see-ten style.
andrewt2 05-27-2008, 06:47 PM awaiting pictures **fidgets impatiently**... come on come on come on quit teasing us lets go! move it move it move it!
Bob 68327 05-28-2008, 06:10 AM Updates ????????;)
jeffspower 05-28-2008, 06:14 AM Yea... how late are you keeping me up tonight? I'm not going to bed until I see pics
IvelDesigns 05-28-2008, 06:49 AM ok, so i have lots and lots of pics from this weekend. a bunch from the rebuild, a handful of "cool" shots, and then a bunch of the tornado that came through 6 miles north of my parents place, where my kids, my parents, my truck and i were all at. we got sprinkles for a couple minutes. they got flattened.
anyways, here's one of the better "fresh from the garage" pics. i knew right where i wanted to go once it was on the road.
http://www.IvelDesigns.com/__Downloads/1969_C10/5_26_08_assembly/feed_lot.jpg
i'll be posting more pics as i go through them
Bob 68327 05-28-2008, 06:53 AM Great Job !!!! It wears that 68 nose very well !! But i'm partial to the 68's of course:lol: You did a great job and should be very proud !!!!! Look foreward to seeing it up close !! Bob
jeffspower 05-28-2008, 07:37 AM More pics over here:
http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/showthread.php?p=2740339&posted=1#post2740339
IvelDesigns 05-28-2008, 08:08 AM sorry, yeah. i should be posting the good pics over here for the people that have been reading this thread for the last year and a half.
flipping between these two shots is kinda fun :)

Then on sunday i buttoned up the rest of the minor stuff and took her for the maiden voyage. this was the first stop:
http://www.IvelDesigns.com/__Downloads/1969_C10/5_26_08_assembly/feed_lot.jpg
then today we had to go into cedar falls to help take down some fallen trees from the tornado the night before (post regarding that coming soon). on the way i stopped and got a couple pics.
http://www.IvelDesigns.com/__Downloads/1969_C10/5_26_08_assembly/ice_house.jpg
after cutting down trees for the morning, i went out and toured one of the harder (not hardest) hit areas by the tornado, then i made the 2 hour drive home. not a single problem or concern the whole way. even took the wife and kids out for dinner in the truck after i got cleaned up.
I used to get looks from people when driving it, now i get stares.
IvelDesigns 05-28-2008, 08:09 AM my 8 year old took this pic while we were on the way home. how many different reflections do you see??

IvelDesigns 05-28-2008, 08:09 AM in all my days... and nights on the internet, this has got to be the best thing i have ever seen. i keep giggling every time i see it :)

andrewt2 05-28-2008, 02:22 PM looks amazing now all you need is a bed cover for it. nothing real fancy a roll up vinyly one would look real good! but either way **drools** i love it with the 68 front clip congrats on a job well done. now to see this girl in person
lurch115 05-29-2008, 04:51 AM where is the under hood shot?!?! i told ya i wanted one....gotta show off some how... ;):uhmk:
IvelDesigns 05-29-2008, 06:31 AM ok ok :)

Frizzle Fry 05-29-2008, 10:39 AM You know, I totally missed that you had actually done the fender mod. Nice job. Now your in the same boat I am with the inners. Just gotta make 4 into 2 ;) Did you mod the hinges?
BTW, your truck is my favorite long bed!
jkaylor68gmc 05-30-2008, 01:28 AM dang thing turned out good huh?
IvelDesigns 05-30-2008, 04:58 PM thanks for all of the feedback guys. i can't tell you how happy I am with how things turned out.
last night i had my first "incident" with the truck though...
i was driving home from an ICubs game outing around 9:30pm. I was reaching for my phone. just as i was pressing the speed dial for my wife i saw something brown out of the corner of my eye on the shoulder. Yeah, you probably already know where this is going.
well, a split second later i hear a thump da thump thump on the side of the truck.
I just kept going. i already had a pretty good idea of what happened, but i wanted to see it in the light, not in the dark. when i got to the gas station my fears were confirmed. It could have been much worse, but what i saw was an 8" dent on the cab, between the door and the bed. no paint cracked, and there were no scratches, just a dent.
when i got home i pulled out the body hammer and popped out as much as i could. now it's down to a 1-2" dent. Since i don't want to mess up the paint, i'll probably find a body shop to fix it the rest of the way.
anyways, that was last nights excitement. now lets just hope we don't have any more incidents like that ever again.
watahyahknow 05-30-2008, 06:50 PM ohw man allway happens when the car is practicly new and you haven't even showed it off yet , whell the paint is still pretty fresh maibe they can just push the dent out all the way with those special tools they have nowadays

great build thread...lots of good info and pics
jeffspower 05-31-2008, 05:49 AM Ouch- hate to hear that happened. Probably lucky it hit in the pillar where it is stiff instead of the door or boxside.
