View Full Version : New or Old classifieds?
We’ve had the new classifieds system for almost two months now. This is the final test of it guys. Do we keep it or get rid of it? I know many like the zip code distance locater among other things, but many prefer the older method as a friendly and more down to earth system. So now it’s you guys choice. Keep it or axe it?
chevy_fatman 10-14-2006, 11:05 PM Mine too.
Split decision so far!! 50/50
SanitysBane 10-14-2006, 11:14 PM I voted.
Americanrider 10-14-2006, 11:15 PM Keep it, but let us add pics to WTB section.
phantom dually 10-14-2006, 11:22 PM I think if the current system brought your ad to the top with NEW POST it would get better exposure. I check new post everytime I visit the board. (DAILY)
LUV2XCLR8 10-14-2006, 11:33 PM Done ;)
N2TRUX 10-14-2006, 11:43 PM I guess I need visuals. I like the pics...:)
gringoloco 10-14-2006, 11:53 PM It definitely has its high points: pics, zip distance, etc. Just needs a ttt option. A combination of the good points of both systems.
I kinda feel like the WTBs get ignored in a seperate forum too. I won't go in there looking to sell stuff, but I'll help a member out if I happen across an ad for something I have...
camaro__thunder 10-15-2006, 12:15 AM like the zip deal, it really helps on non ship parts.
see ten 10-15-2006, 12:44 AM A TTT feature on the new board would make it great. I like to see the distances being posted, it lets me know if I even want to consider buying an item.
boraxman 10-15-2006, 01:12 AM Voted.
68haywagon 10-15-2006, 01:17 AM LOL apparently I evened it back up! 31/31

cliffsta 10-15-2006, 01:31 AM My vote is in :)
cableguy0 10-15-2006, 04:59 AM voted. i think if everyone got over it and used the features it offers especially the rating it would make things a ton easier. also need to definately let the dead ads fall and ads posted in stay up. for guys selling multiple items it makes it hard by the time only 2 or 3 items get sold there post falls off the page.most things in a wtb dont need a pic but some do. i also think the wtb should be a subfolder within each year category would make it a lot less general and easier i think.its overall definately a better system much easier to watch over and "police". as with anything else it will take some time to get used to but it seems like a lot of guys go in and look at it and decide not to use it. for sale posts seem to be nil compared to what they were. its pretty easy to use. just give it a chance and try it for real other than looking at it and saying nahh i dont like it.
70GMCer 10-15-2006, 07:52 AM voted.....axe it!
larry may 10-15-2006, 07:53 AM The new classified is like a lot of other sites . Its cool . Slows down alot of jargon that showed up on the old classified. Seems a bit more professional. my.02%
msgross 10-15-2006, 07:59 AM I like the pics but also like ttt.
Chevyrod 10-15-2006, 08:10 AM My vote is in
meathead95 10-15-2006, 08:15 AM i think if it had the ttt function then it would be perfect the way it is
dougs69c10 10-15-2006, 08:53 AM I like it but the zip code thing isnt accurate at all, I live in birmingham alabama and I put in a zip code in northeastern kentucky and it said it was 124 miles, hell its 100 miles just to huntsville.
Southedisto 10-15-2006, 08:57 AM Im in on this one.
junkyardjohn 10-15-2006, 09:14 AM ;) Me Too. I Would Kinda Like The Mileage Thing If It Worked Even Part Of The Time, But The Only Time It Has Been Accurite Was On One Of My Own Adds & It Said "0" Miles. The Old Fourum Worked. ;) ;) John
TruckinDaddy 10-15-2006, 09:15 AM I like how the old classifieds would show up when you would read through new threads since your last visit off of the front page.
67chevy2wd 10-15-2006, 09:29 AM I voted to keep it, I would like to see this format but add some of the things like TTT from the old one to please some of the other guys/gals. As for me I don't care for the TTT thing because I know I would miss some adds that would get moved down the list unless all the new adds and posts were highlighted like in the other sections. The mileage thing isn't accurate for me either.
big blue 72 10-15-2006, 10:16 AM i voted. i do like the pics though.
Chevyman63 10-15-2006, 10:29 AM I voted, but don't have alot of experience with the new one. I would like to say that which ever way it ends up is ok with me, and I'm sure I speek for everyone when I say thanks for all the time and effort you guys put into this site. We will all adapt to either way it goes.
Thanks again.
boraxman 10-15-2006, 10:30 AM Looks like the axe is edging out...when will the poll expire?
biglou55 10-15-2006, 10:50 AM I voted. The mileage think is wrong from my end. I think every body should put where they are at. It is a deciding factor for me. I like a lot of pics before i buy. j. m. o.
eagle23 10-15-2006, 10:53 AM Just voted. Thanks for asking...another great way this forum operates :metal:
It is virtualyl im possible to add in the TTT, otherwise it would have been done already.... It would be like taking a FWD four cylinder and stuffing a big block in it and makin it RWD, it's possible but not with out rebuilding the entire thing which I do not know the software nor programmign well enough to do. It's the same with the picture attachments in replies. Those reasons are why it's been an option for the classifieds to revert until the software we're using gets further developed.
crews 10-15-2006, 11:45 AM Call me old fashioned, but I prefer the old system..it was a little more user freindly IMHO...not that that matters much.....
19673ontree 10-15-2006, 11:53 AM I have not been on this site long and it is the first forum type site I have ever seen that ask's you to pay to post an ad , I have looked all over this site and made several post's in the forums and love it all but the classifieds , I will not EVER pay ANYTHING to post an ad on ANY site and I think that part of it suck's you are limiting the amount of part's and truck listed for sale and it just hurt's the whole hobby , I would start using the classifieds today if I could post ad's both want to buy and for sale , I love this site but that part of it is a knife in my side and will probably be tthe reason I close this site and don't reopen it , like one year I went to super chevy and had a $20 dollar bill in my hand to pay to get in it was me my wife and my two kids I had not missed a super chevy in over ten years ,,,,,,,,,,,, walked up to the gate the guy said how many ? I said four , he said that will be $160 buck's ???!!!
I did not know what to say I asked WHAT ?? he said it's $40 dollars a person !
you have four people it's a $160 buck's ! I ain't gonna type what I told him but that was in 1998 and I have never went to a super chevy event since and I never will again !!
the moral of this story is that we are hobbiest's and not in it to make a living let's keep the classifieds and wanted part's ad's free for the hobby ,,

roj2323 10-15-2006, 11:53 AM i'm kinda torn as i love the way you can directly upload pitures and keep the post organized with all of the important information I.E. price location exc easily seen but the way buyers contact sellers sucks. i would love to see a combination of both systems where the seller posts there item and it looks like a clasified but posting in thread and or contacting sellers is like the old system. i also think the wanted ads should be in the same place as the for sale ads because no one looks at them otherwise.

I am in no way trying to sound hateful.. and it would take entirely to long to explain... But we had people coming in and scamming our members, and it takes a wee bit of money to keep this place open.. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but I'd rather pay $25 a year then lose the site as a whole.

I would like to see a viable way to offer a more secure safe haven to sell parts, while operating a site that costs thousands upon thousands a year to run, without having to charge a dime... Not to mention the fact me and my admins combined spend over 120+ hours a week here keeping this place running. Yes we do it for the hobby of it all, but when it starts to affect your job and takes more than a new car payment out of your pocket a month to run, things have to be done to keep it going......
aitch 10-15-2006, 01:45 PM Is it just me or did the volume of classifides drop considerably with the new system?
Really they didnt, it just showed less because of the TTT issues, and the posts expired after 15 days...
Canadian694x4 10-15-2006, 03:24 PM This site needs a classifieds system...and now we have it. Sure to some it's lacking a few features but I thought from the get go the new system was a great improvement. IMO it is a lot cleaner and professional! I mean I can actually use it!
Seemed with the old system IMO there was too much mindless chit-chat "ie: wish you were closer, great deal here wish I had the money." stuff that cluttered up the ads distracted sellers from the true potential buyers. I realise it's the sellers right but there seemed to be alot of back door selling with the old system too(not posting in the ad, PMin' the seller) which turned me off the old system. Don't seem to be any or as much of that going on with the new classifieds that I noticed anyway.
I think the new classifeds really blends well for the vehicles for sale section. Above all whatever Josh decides to do I'll hope that you'll still manage to keep parts and whole vehicle sales seperated as that will keep things orginized to that extent.
I appreciate everything your doing for the site Josh.
Thanks
Brian :canada: :bowtie: :metal: :gmc: :flag:
RicksTrucks 10-15-2006, 04:26 PM I like the new one in that the TTT made it hard to find the new posts. Now I can just start at the top and remember where I last looked and stop there. Makes it much faster to see what is going on. It would be nice to be able to post pics when responding to WTB, so we could show the buyer what we have. Otherwise we have to send them the pic via email and takes longer to get emails, etc.
teeitup 10-15-2006, 04:41 PM I voted, I for one can tell you I don't use it nearly as much, I've only listed a few threads on it. I don't even check it as often as I did the other one. It doesn't seem to me to have the views the old one had, and the distance deal is off on mine sometimes. Whichever one is fine though, I'll live with either one.
rick you can post pics using img tags in replies, you just can not upload them
drink2mny 10-15-2006, 07:46 PM I have noticed more people who aren't members are able to contact the sellers without joining. Not sure how they found it, but it hasn't hurt selling used parts for some of us
bozracer 10-15-2006, 08:23 PM i like the new system except for having to open my add to see if there is a new post. i checked email notification but only get emails for pm's not ad posts.
kna4977 10-15-2006, 08:25 PM The new system is nicer, but I think people forget to l look at it as I know I do. The old system for me resulted in a lot more hits and responses.
KSCHEVYUP 10-15-2006, 08:36 PM I have voted also; but not a big deal to me either way. I really like the mileage feature; but mine is not accurate either. Wish everyone would put their location on their posts. My .02 worth
I prefer the older method which allowed me to see how many members are watching etc. I think the zip code is nice if working but it would be just as easy if we required every member to have their location included with their ID. Then a potential buyer can figure out potential cost. It also makes the interest in buying a lot easier if local verses non local. But like most members, we will work with whatever can be provided. The $25. fee is a nit when you consider other boards (Colorado K5 etc.) or E-bay charging listing fees, selling fees, etc.
Finally, I personally really appreciate all the effort Josh, Liz & the team puts in to keep this board alive and well----nothing in life is perfect except perhaps for my love muffin--as when we discuss anything, I am ALWAYS WRONG!!!hehehehehe
low'n slow 10-15-2006, 09:21 PM My only complaint is you can't do a forum jump out of it. Maybe you can and I can't see how to do it.
Shane 10-15-2006, 09:57 PM Old system was better in my opinion ... it had continuity with the rest of the forums. I can honestly say that i haven't checked the classified section more than 3-4 times since the new system was incorporated. Not that it's not a good system, i just havent taken the time to learn it and to be quite honest, don't plan to.
I like change when change is good, but when it makes things more complicated to only gain small benefits, I would rather stay with what we already had.
No offense meant to the admins that put all the time and effort into the system, just offereing my opinion.
Green Machine 10-15-2006, 10:35 PM I thought the old system was easier to browse thru. I used to just browse thru the posts like any other forum on here, most of the time I was not really looking to buy anything, but I have ended up buying quite a few parts that were a good deal, or decided on the spot that I needed/wanted what was posted. I think if you are looking for a specific part the new system might be better, but if you are just browsing for something interesting that you might need later, the old system was better. My 2 cents.
Solver 10-15-2006, 10:37 PM I guess I would have to say I prefer the old system also. The zip distance is usually way off for me and most don't list there actual location so it makes that part really difficult. Also like the TTT and liked when the wanted to buy was listed with the for sale as I feel like maybe someone could have been helped with there needs if it got more exposure like for sale. Do like the pics part but not at the sacrifice of the rest
53burb 10-16-2006, 12:35 AM I liked the "old" system better. Like many people, I liked the TTT feature. I haven't bought anything since we have the "new" system, so I cannot comment on the ZIP code feature. I also don't like ALL the different categories. I'd rather have everything all together in one shot like it used to be.
el curioso 10-16-2006, 02:39 AM It's a keeper.
Ron 586 10-16-2006, 03:02 AM My vote is in. I don't use the classifieds enough to have much of an opinion. I have bought some parts on this board and a truck on MOT board. I bought both on the old system without any problems. But I voted to keep the new system because it does cut down on the banter and BS that went along with the other system.
phlegm 10-16-2006, 10:23 AM Zip code thingy is cool, but I like the old way better.
Joe67 10-16-2006, 03:28 PM We’ve had the new classifieds system for almost two months now. This is the final test of it guys. Do we keep it or get rid of it? I like the new classified setup.
I will say if you are looking to buy something, it does not appear to have the best results.
Question - if you do a forum search for an item, will it pull items for sale or wanted from the classified section?
If it did that I could see it working better.
meathead95 10-16-2006, 04:57 PM you know the more i think about it i think i like the old ones better
RicksTrucks 10-16-2006, 05:01 PM Two things I like about the new one: 1) New stuff is always at the top, 2) If done right you know if it is sold or not. Otherwise, just need to get the zipcode fixed and the ability to post pics in response to WTB ads.
thekid54 10-16-2006, 05:14 PM I understand it takes money to keep the site operating, but there are a lot of sites that don't charge you to post to the classifieds. Two rather large sites that come to mind are the H.A.M.B. and Ruffrodders.com. I know there are people on here that are on those boards too. I think it's kind of lame to charge IMO, but what can you do. Maybe there's a better way, but what do I know.
71SWBChevy 10-16-2006, 05:36 PM This isn't refering to the pay to post change, that was over a year ago, this is refering to the classified layout change.

there is a little bit of a difference in costs to run between the two
hahaha right liz there are few boards out there that have as much traffic as this one,I personaly think that is one of the reasons this board is so great. Also you have a choice to subscribe or not to,just like ebay if you odnt want to sell on there it is your choice but i bet you cant sell on there for a year for only $25.Also noticed that on
http://www.jalopyjournal.com/?page_id=175 which is H.A.M.B that you mention does not charge you to sell but they do charge you $50 to be a sub so if you could fill it in on how that is free for me i would like to know.
67chevy2wd 10-16-2006, 06:03 PM Plus the paying to sell keeps out the scammers.
Those are some amazing numbers.

Yup we have just a couple more people I would say.
The old way was much better.
Jim_PA 10-16-2006, 08:20 PM I like the new one in that the TTT made it hard to find the new posts. Now I can just start at the top and remember where I last looked and stop there. I agree 100%. I love being able to just pick my starting point, and only looking at the new adds without seing all the stuff that's been TTT'd that I have no interest in.
jay_shy 10-16-2006, 08:42 PM I prefer the old way, however I would not loose any sleep if it stayed the new way either.
As for the price to sell. I don't sell very much, however all the info I have received over the last year and a half makes it worth the price of admission. In fact I just got done renewing the subscription for another year.
Jason
FleetsidePaul 10-16-2006, 08:48 PM The new one is a slicker layout but does not have the energy that the old way had.
TTT, and people talking, getting in line, just all the back and forth discussion was more interesting even if you were just looking.
longhorn70gmc 10-16-2006, 09:04 PM The old way was better but change is good and mabie a better way will come along.
Respectfully
centsless 10-16-2006, 09:17 PM My vote is in!! As far as the dues to sell, it is the best $25 anyone could ever spend!!
This place rocks!!
glock35ipsc 10-17-2006, 01:02 PM It would be better if new posts brought it TTT. Also, the ZIP code thang is WAAAY off. It says Colorado Springs is only 24 miles from me, and someone in PA was like 300-n-something miles.
Personally, I like the old way much better. I do admit that I don't check the classifieds nearly as often now that it is in the new format, as compared to when it was the old way.
My only complaint is you can't do a forum jump out of it. Maybe you can and I can't see how to do it.
Top of the page right under the logo is how I do it, I guess its one extra step from the old one.

I dont know about Ruffrodders but I am a member of the Hamb. That place has a bunch of money flowing in through donations, auctions and other Hamb events. Look what happens when they offer stickers or t-shirts or anything that says Hamb on them...Bam! they sell out quickly. And The Jalopy Journal now has sponsors. But saying all this im sure Ryan puts out alot of his own money there too. Personally I dont see what the big deal is. Sheesh you are only talking 25 bucks a year. It costs more than that for two people to go to a movie and have sodas and popcorn.
As far as the new classifieds go Im fine with em. I dont have to click all those read the rules things anymore. I dont always sign in, sometimes I just pop in to see what deal I just missed
