1969k10stepside 11-08-2006, 08:25 PM Well,I picked this up in a local junkyard in early July.I had to act quick because it was to be crushed.I asked them how much they wanted for it.They called me replying that $350 is what they wanted for it.I borrowed a
3/4 ton Silverado and trailer and was up there to get it the next Saturday.
Here is how it looked still sitting in the junkyard:

1969k10stepside 11-08-2006, 08:31 PM I ran the numbers when I got it home and turned out as a 71 SWB K10.It originally had a 292 and a 4 spd.It had towhooks which are gone as well as a tach.It has a 6 inch lift as well as a 3 inch body lift.I first took off the body lift then put on a front clip off a 69.Here is how it looked at that point:

1969k10stepside 11-08-2006, 08:36 PM The clip is back off now.The doors are off, and the cab is stripped.I originally planned on using that cab but it I will use my 71 A/C cab.I will have more pics tomorrow of it now.I forgot to mention the 6 inch lift is off so I can replace it w/ a 4 inch all spring lift.
clay68c10 11-08-2006, 08:54 PM Love the short-wide 4x4's. That's going to be nice.
67ChevyRedneck 11-08-2006, 09:22 PM Looks like a pretty darn nice start for a junkyard "indiana" truck. I would LOVE to have a 4x4... it's just not feasable for like the next 5 years
Robert1970C20rstbukt 11-08-2006, 11:31 PM Cool! :metal: Looks like it has a good solid tailgate, those are hard to find around here.
ghetto_superman 11-09-2006, 12:30 AM tailgates are IMPOSSIBLE to find around here..
1969k10stepside 11-09-2006, 11:29 AM Here is pics of it at stock height sitting outside half apart.

Sweet72 11-09-2006, 11:46 AM Looks like a solid frame from here. Good luck and you have your work cut out for you. Keep us posted on progress.
shaneschevys 11-09-2006, 12:41 PM Nice junkyard save. Dont see to many swb 4x4's.
1969k10stepside 11-09-2006, 01:02 PM The frame is solid but has had alot of extra holes drilled in it for different exhaust systems, etc so I am going to weld them up before its powdercoated.I am going to go take the dual exhaust off now...
1969k10stepside 11-09-2006, 03:59 PM Well, the exhaust is off now,and I am now removing anything I want/need off the cab before I get rid of it....
Well,Im going out in the garage to work on the hood for it.I will post some more pics tonight or tomorrow.
Aarons72s 11-09-2006, 10:48 PM Sweet dustin Nice to finally see some pics. I love the name you picked.
Project Junkyard Resurrection. That is just awesome.

JerseyGirl 11-09-2006, 10:52 PM Cool truck!! I see alot nicer at the junkyards too! It's crazy what people will bring it to be crushed!!!!!
Canadian694x4 11-10-2006, 10:50 AM Nice man! Keep Up The Great Work!
1969k10stepside 11-12-2006, 05:34 PM Well,I spent the day removing the body which turned out good and easy since I have pulled cabs, beds, etc off of these trucks several times.
This week I am welding up unneccessary holes and getting it ready to be powdercoated. Here is some pics of it now and the short fleet sitting on the trailer till I am ready to work on it.

1969k10stepside 11-15-2006, 05:58 PM Well, here is a pic of the a/c cab I got for FREE.It needs some rocker and cab corner work.I need to do some minor work and it will be ready to go on the frame when its back from the powdercoaters. These arent great pics but will do till it stops raining so I can get some new pics.

kndall 11-15-2006, 06:49 PM If that 2nd truck in pic at the salvage is where I think it is at, (off of I35 and Milam rd) you probably couldn't get it for 10 times what you have in yours.
1969k10stepside 11-17-2006, 07:40 PM Well,Im working on the cheyenne doors for it now.I am getting them in primer and some dents fixed.Tomorrow I will hopefully get some done on it...
1969k10stepside 11-17-2006, 07:49 PM Here is some pics of the $50 doors sitting in the garage. The ol' 79 K10 is in the background awaiting a new motor(next project)The pics arent that great..

1969k10stepside 11-24-2006, 09:54 PM Ok,I got the frame in the garage finally and began taking off the old wiring and brake lines, etc.I have the passenger side frame cleaned and ready to be sandblasted. The drivers side is almost done, hopefully its powdercoated by the end of next month.Btw,I bought some wheel dollies for it and is it alot easier to work on being able to manuever the frame around in the garage.
Here are a few pics

1969k10stepside 11-24-2006, 10:25 PM I thought I would throw in a pic of the junk I took off tonight. In the pile is a powersteering pump supposively for the 292 it came with stock.I am saving it but the rest is being thrown away.

Litemup 11-24-2006, 11:59 PM cool build up thread can't wait to see what it ends up lookin' like.
Yukon Jack 11-25-2006, 08:49 AM The project is definitely moving along. Good project to watch.
FRENCHBLUE72 11-25-2006, 12:37 PM Looks like some good progress..
1969k10stepside 11-25-2006, 06:56 PM Well,I got out the old sandblaster and sandblasted the frame.I didnt do all the frame or take all the rust off down to the bare metal but I did take off most of the rust before dark.I have another 2 afternoons of work ahead of me before all the frame is sandblasted and in bare metal then I have to do the axles.

1969k10stepside 11-26-2006, 11:09 PM Today I just cut off some not stock brackets mostly for the exhaust and did some minor work to the frame and looked for any issues I need to adress as well as cleaning up some spots to weld up w/ the mig welder next week.More progress to come in the next few days including the inspections of the differentials and seeing what problems I might encounter there.
bgangsta999 11-27-2006, 02:05 PM Cant wait to see how this one turns out:metal:
1969k10stepside 11-30-2006, 07:38 PM Well,Im tearing apart the motor and getting ready to be cleaned right now.I should have it gone by next week to be cleaned.
Bandit76 12-09-2006, 09:35 PM Cool stuff man. Keep it up.
msgross 12-09-2006, 09:47 PM How much media did it take to blast the frame and what did you use? I am planning on doing it outside as well and won't be reusing any since it will be in the gravel....thanks..
1969k10stepside 12-09-2006, 09:54 PM I used silica sand and I forget what kind it is.I will look when I head to the garage tomorrow.I have used over 2 bags but that is including blasting some of the frame on my 69 K10 also.I put a tarp down under it so I can reuse some of the sand.I have probably used over 1 and 1/2 bags on this frame alone and that is only half the frame inside and out and that isnt even to the bare metal, only down to the original frame paint. You have to keep in mind the blaster is my own creation and works but not as well as professional ones and mine takes awhile to build up pressure so some sand is wasted before its pressure build up.
1969k10stepside 12-16-2006, 04:46 PM Update:
Motor still hasnt been took to the machine shop, was busy this week.
Spent the day taking off rust and getting the frame in bare metal.I shot primer over that then shot on some black paint.I have over half the frame done but still have more to do.It turned out good, better than the frame did on the 69 K10 or my old 71 C/10.I will try to get pics tomorrow of the frame.I would have liked to get the frame powdercoated but I am spending the money on other stuff for the truck and I just want it together so I saved money and time and painted it.
1969k10stepside 12-21-2006, 01:09 PM Spending quality time off working on the truck.I am hooking up everything at the moment to get the rest of the frame cleaned up and then shoot some primer.Hopefully the frame is 100% done by tomorrow.
1969k10stepside 12-22-2006, 12:23 PM Pics of what I have done so far.Hope to finish it up today and get it outside so the sun will shine on it and then I can get a good set of pics.

smitty62 12-22-2006, 03:55 PM You're moving right along on that project. I always wonder how JY's justify asking $350 for a truck they say they are going to crush...and get $5-$10 for it. You'd think they'd give a guy a break once in a while :o(
1969k10stepside 12-22-2006, 04:10 PM I forgot to mention....Thanks to a new vendor I will soon have a NP 205 transfer case and a TH 350 transmission for it.
1969k10stepside 12-22-2006, 09:26 PM Well,I just got done shooting on black paint. The outside of the frame is 95% done, now I just have to spray the inside of the frame and paint the crossmembers.
1969k10stepside 12-23-2006, 01:34 PM Clean some frame, shoot some primer, then shoot on the paint.Repeat as necessary...:blah::blah: Took of the differential covers and found no metal shavings,Thank god.Just got done painting the diff. covers and they are drying.I am running low on paint so when I run out today I am going to get the cab in the garage and work on it.
1969k10stepside 12-23-2006, 03:04 PM Got the cab out and took some pics to show the rust. This may seem like alot but since it was free and has A/C I am going to reapir it.Looks like fun!!!

blacktruck 12-23-2006, 03:20 PM can't beat the price of free. i'd love to see how this turns out. i bet it's gonna be SWEET.
68shortstep 12-23-2006, 04:55 PM Somebody just HAS TO say it:
That little spot of rust ought to buff-out...............
1969k10stepside 12-23-2006, 07:27 PM I officially quit for the night after I busted my knuckles on the power steering box while unbolting a bracket.I managed to get more and more of the frame painted and did some minor work on the cab tonight.Hope the get the cab cleaned up tomorrow and maybe put the doors on temporarily to see how it looks
msgross 12-23-2006, 07:29 PM are you spraying the frame? How many coats and with what...thanks
1969k10stepside 12-23-2006, 07:39 PM I am using Rustoleum gloss black paint.I cant tell how much I have used because I have used alot and lost track.I am trying to get the frame looking good so if I see a run or an imperfection or something I will think about all night I will go through and take it off and repaint it.I used some sandable primer first before the paint and when I am done it will have a clear coat for some protection on top of the paint.I have put on 2 coats so far of paint. Its time consuming but it looks good.
1969k10stepside 12-23-2006, 09:38 PM More pics!I think the shop needs new lights,the pics are a little dark:rolleyes:
You can see the quality of the paint job, sort off...You can see I am almost done...

N2TRUX 12-23-2006, 09:54 PM Nice progress...:metal:
msgross 12-23-2006, 09:57 PM so you are thinning it and spraying it? lookin good. That is my plan over the next two months
1969k10stepside 12-23-2006, 10:14 PM so you are thinning it?
No,I have not thinned it out.My advise to you is to take your time and it will turn out good. The metal work will make the paint job look good or make it look bad.My frame has some pitting in it.I took the time and got rid of most the pitting and that turned out alright but in some areas I didnt take out the pitting and I really dont care for the look of it in those spots.I didnt take the time to take the pitting out of the top of the frame or the inside frame rails because you cant see that with the body on but I did take out the pitting on the sides.I used a air tool with a 3m automotive paint and rust stripper wheel on it to remove pitting and saved some silica sand and that did a good job of removing the pitting in it and leveled out the look.
toomanytoyz 12-23-2006, 10:45 PM Looking Good, At the rate u are moving u should make the target date.........
Will keep watch on your Progress as Im sure i will learn from it............
Rick
1969k10stepside 12-23-2006, 10:52 PM I am still learning from it too.My 4 inch all spring lift kit should be here before the end of the month.I cant wait to get it and install it.Drivetrain should be in by the end of January leaving me with about a month to get the body on and wire it just enough to get it running
and hopefully meeting the deadline. Then its more body work time then paint.
1969k10stepside 12-23-2006, 11:32 PM I was doing some adding and figured out at this point I have about $750 in the truck including the original price of the truck. That is not including the new 4" all spring lift which is another $600 or the motor because it was free but I am still putting some performance parts in it.However that price is including 95% of the body panels that are useable and in good shape. The only body panels I need to buy is a bed floor, tailgate, and maybe a bedside.I think I am doing good so far:D.What do you think?
68GMC454 12-23-2006, 11:36 PM your making great progress so far..looks good to...
Troy-Built 12-24-2006, 02:57 PM Let's see if I can do this
1969k10stepside 12-24-2006, 03:01 PM Well,I see my tranny,t case,adapter plate,shifter,skid plate.Have any pics of where the tranny is broke?
1969k10stepside 12-24-2006, 04:48 PM When I am not working on it I guess I just post more and more pics.
Here are some ones I just took while the frame was outside.Msgross, these pics will show the quality of the paint job.;)
msgross 12-24-2006, 06:51 PM looks like they have a raised steering arm on the front axle. Did it have a lift at one time? Frame is looking nice...I hope to have the same pics after x-mas...
1969k10stepside 12-24-2006, 08:46 PM It had a 6 inch lift on it when I got it that I removed so it was easier to remove the body.I didnt have a original steering arm to put on it so I just left that one on.A 4 inch lift is going back on it soon so I would have had to reinstall it anyway
1969k10stepside 12-25-2006, 02:14 PM Ok,pics will be here in a few hours.Time to unveil the 4" all spring lift kit.A new set of dynomax headers,a edelbrock intake, and some other stuff.Look for pics later.Just thought I would say what the truck got for christmas ahead of time.
1969k10stepside 12-25-2006, 03:44 PM Pics are here!
Sorry, they are a little dark, will try to get better pics tomorrow.;)

1969k10stepside 12-25-2006, 05:47 PM Started taking the front end apart for the lift kit.The company didnt included bolts so I have to go buy some tomorrow.
1969k10stepside 12-25-2006, 08:17 PM Did some more painting.Got the spring hangers painted.Lift kit can almost go on now.Waiting for some bushings and a few bolts.
Troy-Built 12-26-2006, 07:40 AM On the picture of the transfer case, if you look under the Dremel box you can see the crack in the case. It is a shame too because the transmission only has about 8000 miles on it. I think a good case and know how would make a great transmission for your truck.
arkracing 12-26-2006, 08:13 AM On the picture of the transfer case, if you look under the Dremel box you can see the crack in the case. It is a shame too because the transmission only has about 8000 miles on it. I think a good case and know how would make a great transmission for your truck.
Here I made it a little easier to spot. Not sure if the bottom one is a crack too - but I circled it just in case.
1969k10stepside 12-26-2006, 12:35 PM Pics of progress. The pics are dark(should have asked for new lights for christmas).Pics of the rear lift springs also.

1969k10stepside 12-26-2006, 01:46 PM I did some more painting.Looking for some bushings and grade 8 bolts because they werent supplied.Thats slowing me down.
1969k10stepside 12-26-2006, 03:23 PM Just shot some flat black on the doors for the truck. Will have pics later
FRENCHBLUE72 12-26-2006, 03:29 PM Hey dustin why did you only paint the inside of the frame???
1969k10stepside 12-26-2006, 03:31 PM You mean the outside?I only painted the outside because I am pretty much out of paint and wanted to finish the outside.I still need to go through and do some cleaning on the inside before it gets primered and painted.I have shot some paint on the inside, just not alot.
1969k10stepside 12-26-2006, 05:52 PM Waiting for parts to come in so I am working on the body now.Got one door painted flat black(temporarily till its ready for paint). The door was rust free but has a big dent in the lower section I will need to adress.I am going to clean and paint the other door tomorrow and maybe the hood.If I feel lucky the cowl might get painted also.Stay tuned!
