I have a GMC Sierra K1500 SE standard cab that I am about to completely redo from top to bottom. But I have a few problems I need to address before I start this. First, the transmission loves to wear out and brake the main gear about every 30,000 miles, and has been rebuilt twice. I need some posible sugestions as to what is doing that so when I redo the motor and the trans. I want to stick a whole new motor in that truck but I don't know what motor I want to go. It has a 350 already in it so I may just rebuild it but I don't want a faulty transmission so need suggestions on a new transmission or what could be causing the problem with this one. Second, all the wiring needs to be replaced, its above and beyond repair. Considering that I may put a whole new motor and transmission in this truck, what would be some options for wiring. And finally, the interior: Its the work truck interior and I want the inside to look awesome, and its going to have to redone all the way. So starting with the floor up I need recommendations. I already have all the components for a wicked sound system. But since my AC is shot and my wiring is chewed, I want to put in a temperature controlled system. Like I said. Its going to be a ton of work. I have already stripped all the interior out to the bare painted metal except for dash (which I would love to have a custom dash to but I don't know where to start). Please Help ME!

If you hadn't already started stripping it out I would say the first step would be to sell it and get a better truck to start with! You have a base model truck that is in bad shape. Many times, unless you have sentimental investment in it, it is better to start with a decent truck. We are not talking about a truck that is hard to find or been out of production forever, this is a common, fairly new truck.
You had better be committed to this thing, because you have a LOT of work and frustration ahead from the way you describe it. You would be better starting with a truck that does not have a ton of problems and has the options you want.
Just my opinion, I could be wrong.

As far as the trans put in a 97 4l60e transmission. take to a tranny shop all they have to do is add some wiring to make it work. the 4l60e is a better trans the 700r4 that be in it.

Thanks guys. No the truck was given to me and I know it doesn't have any frame or body damage, and yes it does have a little sentimental value too so thats the reason why I am restoring it. Also another reason is that I will be able to totally customize this truck without having to pay for a truck with a good drivetrain and interior just to want to tear it all out and upgrade it anyways. What about the 4180e, since I got to get my PCM reprogrammed anyway, would it be better to upgrade to the heavier transmission?

Also the truck already has a 4160e in it. And I have read that they are subject to failure in that year model because of a computer ground problem
