Hey guys!

I just purchased a '90 1500 ext. cab SWB with the 5.7L and auto tranny. This thing only has 79K on it! I also own an '03 Silverado std. cab SWB with the 4.3L and auto tranny.

I have several questions for you guys on the '90 1500.
The engine runs strong and starts right up every time. The tranny works perfectly, and shifts as it should. The truck is in overall Excellent shape for being 16 years old.

Now, to my questions: On the 6 hour drive back home from purchasing the truck, the coolant temp guage stayed between 110 and 180. When I start the truck, the guage does the normal test sweep then it drops down to 110 and makes a very SLOW climb to the 150-160 range, then it stops moving. Even when I drove through several 10 mile an hour stop and go backups on the freeway. Could the guage be faulty, could the sending unit be bad, or could there be a 160 degree thermostat in there??

Second question: The A/C on this truck does not work properly. When on, every 2-3 seconds there is a noticible drop in the voltage while i'm driving the truck. I'm not sure if that is normal. When I purchased the truck, the previous owner just charged the system every year. I want to actually fix this so its ready for next summer and I don't have to worry. Also, when looking at the A/C compressor, it is covered with what appears to be an oily dirt covered film all over, and there is also that same film covering all around just where the compressor is mounted. I want to do whatever it will take to fix the A/C to 100% operation, plus change over from R12 to R134a. How hard is that to do? The engine does not leak or burn any oil, so I know its not engine oil.

Last question for now: I want to put on a set of headers and a cat back dual side exit exhaust. Can anyone recomend a good quality but not overly expensive exhaust system that will sound great but not be obnoxious.

Thanks for reading my long post. Please let me know what you guys think!

Thanks!

Welcome to the board.

Sounds like a nice truck, on your questions, I'd say your compressor was hosed and that may be effecting the voltage drop as it tries to kick on. Since it seems to run well, I would think that you may have a 160 thermostat. If you have a way, I would try and hook up another meter to check to see if it is registering correctly.

For exhaust I loved the sound of my Flowmaster 50's on my 96.
