View Full Version : Repaired front fenders
Kabwe 11-27-2006, 06:44 PM After a a lot of thought I decided to save my front fenders instead of buying new ones. The eyebrow on both were pretty bad and I had to make patch panels for them. The hardest one to make was the passenger side fender. The driver side one was really easy. So if anyone else has to do this here is the repair.

dwcsr 11-27-2006, 06:46 PM nice job. I'll send mine right over
Kabwe 11-27-2006, 06:52 PM nice job. I'll send mine right over
Send them on over I’ll take care of them. Especially if they are straighter than mine.lol
This weekend I'm gonna sand them down to bare metal, do all the rest of the body work on them and epoxy prime them. They will need very little filler just the way I like it. The eyebrows were the worst part on the fenders the rest of the work should be a piece of cake.
Igotachevyor2 11-27-2006, 07:21 PM looks good
caino59 11-27-2006, 08:21 PM that's some fine metal work.

Daniel U 11-28-2006, 10:23 AM Nice metal work. How many hours into the fenders? Or is that a sore subject?
Kabwe 11-28-2006, 12:00 PM Nice metal work. How many hours into the fenders? Or is that a sore subject?
Nope not a sore subject at all, this is my favorite part of the project. I love to cut, weld, grind, and shape metal its great for stress.lol
Its only around 4 to 5 hours in the repair. Plus I have more time than money, I also had to make a patch and repair the lower passenger fender.

Hey man you are a human being with a brain so you are already 80% there. Now its just the 20% guts to cut your ride up that you need.
Lightning 11-29-2006, 04:11 PM how did you make the patch panels? hammer and anvil ? or something special?
Kabwe 11-29-2006, 05:30 PM how did you make the patch panels? hammer and anvil ? or something special?
All the patch panels I made were done with a welder, vice, hammer and dolly, and shears. Take the worst fender patch that I had to make. First I used the vice to bend the sheetmetal to the contour I wanted, then I use the shears to make relief cuts so that I could make the turn radius I needed, then I welded the relief cuts. Then comes the hammer and dolly work to make the patch more precise.
CAL 58 GMC 11-29-2006, 07:45 PM Nice job Kabwe! It looks like your making some go progress!
Kabwe 11-29-2006, 07:56 PM Well I'm trying to do something everyday that way she has to get done.lol
Lightning 11-30-2006, 10:39 AM After seeing what you have done here i think i'm gonna try and fix my fenders.. Thanks for the motivation!
Kabwe 11-30-2006, 11:45 AM No problem if I can be of help let me know pm me a pic and I be glad to take a look.
pgf545 11-30-2006, 03:34 PM I was only kidding about the camaro...but if it only cost beer....hmmmmm. But I will let you know if I run into problems and maybe you can give me a helping hand over the net. I have been replacing the floors and am doing the trunk next and then on to the body panels. I figured I would to the panels that you can't see first for the practice. At first I was a little scared about doing it but the more I do the more comfortable I get. So to jds...get the body hammer out and get busy. What's the worse that can happen? Thanks Kabwe.

No problem feel free to ask me any question and I will be more than happy to help if I can. I was lucky enough to have older brothers (lowriders) and met cool people that taught me few things and are still teaching me things. Thats what hotrodding is all about cool people although I have met a**holes along the way but ususally they did not build their cars.lol. Judging from the work I see on your build page its gonna be a piece of cake for you.
I knew you were joking about the camero because you live in Texas, but I do help for beer or a soda and great conversation. I feel this way if I’m at your house anyway having beers, we might as well be building something.
Lightning 11-30-2006, 10:10 PM This is the rear of the fender
http://015c699.netsolhost.com/image/3.jpg
both driver side and passenger side fenders are shot on the lower rear. and whole chunks of the lip in the wheel well are gone.
I have to grind these down and see what is really there...
Kabwe 12-01-2006, 01:19 PM If that metal in the middle of the fender is good I could save this fender, but it looks like 3 to 4 patches. How is your sheet metal welding? Use gas please; tack do not run a bead on sheet metal is jump around a lot to allow the metal time to cool.
When grind welds I use a cut-off wheel to get it as close to the surrounding metal as possible then I finish with a roloc disc on an angle grinder.
I pm'd you how I would go about this along with my email address if you need any clarification. This all depends on if that center metal is good if its not look for used fenders that can be saved.
Most people will tell you to find new fenders but I like challenges so I would do it just for before and after shots.lol
Jebb1978 12-01-2006, 04:46 PM Wow man, great work as always. Glad to hear your diggin in again!
Kabwe 12-01-2006, 05:37 PM Thanks Jebb1978,
Hows the new house coming along? I hope all is well. I'm not going to ask about the truck because I know you just moved into a house so things must be going slow on that end.
Jebb1978 12-02-2006, 12:25 PM The house is coming around, lots of work but it's gratuitous. As far as the truck I am in the motor right now. Everything looks really nice on the inside so far. I think she will get a new oil pump, water pump and regasket job and that looks like it. My cousin was in there a few thousand miles ago or so. I also got in my new blank tailgate to graft my rusty ones GMC letters too. I am going to a pro for that though. You are a braver man than I.
Keep up the good work, it is inspiring!
