View Full Version : Upgraded to Satellite Internet - Can't bank online anymore
ronh72c10 11-29-2006, 08:19 AM Last week I went to satellite internet but found I can't online bank anymore. If I enable errors on IE I get an access denied message, help on the bank website says it's due to firewall settings. Since I don't have a firewall (and it's not enabled in XP) it must be on hughes.net's end, is there any way around this?

shifty 11-29-2006, 08:56 AM You may have a firewall and you don't know it.
Is there a router built-in to the hardware they installed? What hardware did they install in your house to get you the internet connecction?
ronh72c10 11-29-2006, 12:09 PM Basically there's the satellite modem that directly connects to the dish, that box has an ethernet connection that I had plugged into a router so I could share the connection. I tried it directly connected to the satellite modem (no router) and it still didn't work. (BTW every other website I've tried works) So unless the satellite modem has a firewall in it things aren't looking so good.
I do have an open support request with them on this but I was hoping somebody had a quick solution to this problem.

panhandler62 11-29-2006, 12:09 PM If the banking connection is a normal website then I'm with Shifty.
If you use any kind of VPN connection to the bank (if you do you will know becuase you would have had to set it up or install special software) then latency can be a problem with satellite internet services.
If you didn't have to do anything but enter a URL and register to use the online banking service then ignore this.
swervin ervin 11-29-2006, 01:07 PM Good luck with getting help with this from Hughesnet. A non english talking script reader isn't going to be much help. Try going to http://www.dslreports.com/forum/sat if you really want help with these things.
Have you been to http://customercare.myhughesnet.com/ to see if maybe you can find what is wrong.
BTW, I also have Hughesnet. Had it for several years. I do online banking every day. No problems at all. I'm sure it's probably just a setting you have wrong. Have you tried diabling your proxy for the LAN settings? Go into Internet properties>Connections and click on the LAN Settings button. Uncheck where is says "Use a proxy server for your LAN"
ronh72c10 11-29-2006, 08:21 PM No I'm not using VPN, just a https connection to the bank, proxy is disabled for the lan connections and lastly the modem does have a firewall but it's disabled.

shifty 11-29-2006, 09:31 PM Can you connect to any other https (SSL encrypted) sites? Try these:
https://www.americanexpress.com
https://www.paypal.com
https://www.suntrust.com
If not, then for some reason something between you and the rest of the internet is blocking secure (SSL encrypted) traffic. It could be a setting in Internet Explorer, it could be something in the equipment they installed for your connection, etc.
Post back your findings?
ronh72c10 11-29-2006, 10:18 PM Ok, this is weird. I went through the complicated network config on the customercare.myhughesnet.com website and found that I still couldn't access the td bank from the XP machine. But I did find that from my second machine (windows 2000) it does work. The network configs are identical between the two machines.
BTW I tried paypal before the config changes and it worked. So it doesn't look like it was a https related issue.
I don't mind using the 2000 machine for banking but now I'm curious what the difference is.

shifty 11-29-2006, 10:35 PM Ok, I wonder if it could be something with Internet Explorer.
Did you install any special software (from Hughes) on the XP machine that didn't go on the XP machine?
Do you have any other Internet Browser installed on your machine? Before telling you how to completely reset all of your browser settings to default, I kinda want to know if another browser fails this test, or if it's only a problem Internet Explorer is having.
shifty 11-29-2006, 10:37 PM Also, I guess I should ask....this is something we should look into - whether or not you may have been hijacked on your computer -
Can you download this piece of software:
http://www.filehippo.com/download_hijackthis/ (Click "download latest version on the right)
Save it to some safe place on your hard drive. Run it. Choose "Scan and save logfile". Copy the contents of the logfile it generates and paste it here in a new post. I will look it over and see if maybe you have any bad stuff on your computer that could nerf or screw things up.
ronh72c10 11-30-2006, 08:27 AM Thanks Shifty, I'll download it tonight just in case.
As far as any other browsers go I've only got IE 6 on both machines. It's possible that my IE on the Xp machine might be partly messed up because I installed IE 7 on it and then deinstalled it. Now that I think about it that probably explains alot.
And as far as Hughes software goes I didn't have to install anything on the machine to support it.

shifty 11-30-2006, 01:13 PM Okay, well....if you're not totally against it, open Internet Explorer, then click on the Tools menu, choose Internet Options, click the Advanced tab and choose "reset to defaults" or "Reset all defaults". This will restore IE6 (or IE7) to the factory defaults, and it may fix the problem.
ronh72c10 11-30-2006, 11:05 PM For the moment I'm going to leave the settings and tomorrow will put IE7 back on and see if removing that caused all of the issues.
I posted a hijack this log in another thread if you don't mind looking at it.

shifty 11-30-2006, 11:08 PM Will give a look now.
ronh72c10 12-01-2006, 09:44 PM Well it looks like the IE7 deinstall caused the problem, once I reinstalled it everything worked correctly.
Thanks!
swervin ervin 12-01-2006, 11:27 PM Yeah, I installed IE7 and Quicken wouldn't connect to my bank. I uninstalled it and it still wouldn't work. I restored XP to a earlier time before installing IE7 and all was fine.
Good you got it figured out.
joeymarkgraf 12-25-2006, 09:21 PM I know for a fact that the hughes software puts you through a "hughes proxy." Never, ever install the software they provide you if you can avoid it. Not only that, but they also monitor all your port requests as part of their 300 mb per day limit, which slows you down to nothing if you hit it. I've had nothing but problems with the sat internet thing, so I wish you better luck than I had.
