On my '98 burb w/ a 350, I've got a code p0307 which is a cylinder7 misfire. I'm going to replace my plugs and wires/dist. cap.

What plugs do folks recommend?? And why? Would you get platinum??

What about plug wires and distrib cap??

thanks.

The plugs that came in the truck from the factory would have been acdelco plus platnium part #41-932 about $5 each, would strongly reccomend going with those. cap and rotor and wires you could go acdelco but Standard or Borgwarner would work.

thanks. one thing I've never figured out is what about those gimic plugs like the splitfire and quad-tip plugs... are those junk? Are they lying about the performance improvements? Is there ever a case those help??

and I guess for a stock truck no sense going with high end like MSD??

ACTUALY, the MSD high end stuff is not a bad idea anywhere. The increased flow of electrons and lower resistance adds up to a better spark and fuel burn. More fuel burned on each filling of the combustion chamber adds up to retrieval of lost horsepower. This also helps on gas mileage and performance. I added a MSD setup (MSD 6AL, plug wires, and coil) on my 91 Chevy truck and the results is good performance and better performance. My truck is a basic 5.7 liter motor with auto tranny and 3.42 gears, but a good solid 20 MPG mixed driving is common for it. I would stick with the stock style plugs, ifpossible but look at better wires for an improvement. you DO get what you pay for.

wow, you get 20mpg!!! impressive. of course the 3.42 helps some. thanks.

I would run the factory ac delco plugs and the parts store high end plug wires

When I purchased the truck the PO told me that he was getting decent mileage with it. After driving it for the first year, my mixed driving average was around 17 MPG---I would call that decent for a pickup, but I wanted better. I put in a Hypertech computer chip, a Airaide brand TBI spacer, and Edelbrock shorty headers along with a 2 1/2 Catback dual muffler and pipes. That picked up about 2 MPG--with the TBI spacer being the best thing I ever did--increased low end torque and driveability. A little later I decided on the MSD parts--first I did the 8MM plug wires and new plugs---(smoother engine operation noted right away). Next I did the coil replacement--using the MSD coil---better spark band and easier starting noted. That was followed up a few weeks later with the MSD 6AL (Multi-spark control box) This seemed to give a stronger overall performance to the motor. The install of all of the items were "Plug and Play" on my motor and did not take long to do the work. Last summer I put an electric fan setup on the truck and eliminated the fan and fan clutch from the waterpump. This seemed to make the motor idle smoother and run better. Along the way, I gained gas mileage and ease of daily operation. I put 20,000 to 25,000 miles a year on this truck and I drive it everywhere. This motor has over 200,000 miles on it, so far.
In the pictures below, you will also see that I changed out the air cleaner for a 4" K&N filter to allow me to get more air to the engine. Also; note the lack of a fan shroud and the room around the front of the motor.

For the 91 model trucks, the computer is still the one with the removable PROM chip. There were two chips available and the one that I got was the most agressive of the two. It has been awhile since I did it and I would have to look through some deep files for it. I also run a 180 degree T/stat to support the chip's program.

I went with the factory plugs and MSD wires. The MSD wires are 8.5 mm and cost about the same as Borg Warner and are cheaper than Delco's. I picked them up from Summit Racing.

I like to use the MSD spiral core wires. I use Bosch platinum plugs and don't have a reason to change. I've tried the Split-Fires and don't really justify the expense. I would recommend using an MSD or Accel dist. cap. They have brass contacts compared to the aluminum ones of the stock cap.

allright, I'm going to get the msd wires/cap. Thanks. Now, the real question... red or black wires??? :) I think I'll go with the red.

allright, I was all ready to checkout at summit with this:

accel cap 44
accel rotor 16
ac delco 41-932 platinum plugs 7/each
msd wires 85
--------------
200 total.

but they have this accel kit for $130.

ACC-TST3

with the same (I think) accel cap/rotor. 8mm plug wires and I guess accel "ugroove" plugs.

Seems like a lot more for my first choice... what would you do??

I used accel plug wires on my Harley, and they didn't perform like I would have expected. I personally use the Accel plugs, but the wires are not my choice. I would get the MSD wires. That is my .02

Just to chime in on the TBI spacer. Maybe it makes a noticeable difference on the small blocks, but I installed one on my 454 in my one ton dually. Honestly, I have noticed no difference. Same mileage, maybe a BIT better torque on the lower end, but that is about it. I have finally had a chance to use the truck since putting it on and really not much of a difference.

But when I am pulling a 32 foot gooseneck that is loaded with an International 856 tractor with loader, it whistles quite a bit. Almost makes it sound like I got a turbo under the hood.

I also agree on the wires. I love MSD wires. they have been good to me. For a beater, I wouldn't spend the money.
