What's this? how do I fix it? my comp has been running poorly (more than usual  ) and slow, the more browser windows I have open the slower it gets, it almost comes to a screeching stop, I have disc keeper that I run regularly on my PC, is this related? does this have anything to with performance? I'm attaching a couple of screenshots below.

Thanks.

BTW, I'm running windows XP home edition and dial up.

Well, for one, you might think about defragmenting C:\ drive.

But, usually the error you speak of is easily fixed by actually putting a decent amount of RAM (memory sticks - not to be confused with hard drive space as it so often is).

Go into the Control Panel. If it says "Switch to classic veiw" in the left-hand side, click it. In the right-hand pane, find "System". Double-click that Icon and see a window like this one - please take a screenshot of it and post it here for me to see:

Use their memory selector to plug in what type of Compaq computer you have - it will give you a list of compatible choices for your computer, at some of the cheapest prices (for reputable parts) you're going to find anywhere.

There are really two problems here, also. First, for optimal performance out of Windows XP, you really should have 512MB of RAM. Second, your computer uses a Celeron processor, which is the Ford Pinto of the entire Pentium line. The latter of those two is something you can't really change easily, and you'll do fine with just having more RAM.

Now, here's the kicker. You need to get the case opened and look inside it to see what you have in there - one stick or two. You might be able to save a couple bucks.

Can you please tell me what model number of Compaq computer you have? If you will, I will dig up the service manual for you, which will have step by step instructions on how to open up your case AND to replace your stick(s) of memory.

I'll be happy to walk you through this stuff. If you actually pay someone to do this, you might as well just go to Dell and buy a new computer for $500 w/the monitor included ;)

I see, it sucks that I'm driving a pinto :( wish I could trade it for a 'vette
I have the Compaq Presario 5000 (got the # from front of comp)

I thought about just buying another PC but I don't want to lose all the stuff I got in this one and I don't know how to save it from one to other since I'm computer illiterate.

Thanks a lot :)

BTW, opening the case isn't that big of a deal, I opened it to change a fried modem before.

Microsoft makes it pretty easy to transfer from one XP machine to another - but if your stuff is THAT important, you should really learn how to backup your important pictures and things to a CD (burning it to CD). Just the other day, my close friend in Florida lost all the family pictures from the last 5 years because they were too stubborn to backup! Now they lost 5 years of family memories ....

Anyway, enough preaching :)

This should work for you:

Only pay attention to step #2-4!!! (Ignore #1 - I suggest you get your RAM from Crucial.com!)

See if that matches your system - specifically, look at the pictures in steps 3 and 4 and see if it looks like your case is the same/opens the same. If so, that should give a good idea of how to finish this task.

Some other info for upgrading your PC can be found here: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/documentSubCategory?rule=17370&lc=en&cc=us&lang=en&product=92867&dlc=en

As always - if you have any - and I mean ANY questions, feel free to ask. I'll be happy to answer.
