Hey guys. I figured i'd post a thread updating you on my project truck.

A little background...

I'm 16, I currently drive a ranger but I purchased a 1967 LWB fleetside C10 complete with all of the patch panels in running shape for $1000. I am rebuilding it for my senior project.

I have experience in welding, fabricating and some bodywork because I also race motocross and my brother, my dad, and I all race Xtreme Stock cars on the dirt oval. I helped build two of our cars, a Camaro and a Malibu.

I have been racing motocross for 12 years, and it is pretty much the center of my life (for the most part).

The truck:

I was told the cab is virgin, and has never been touched (minus a pathetic attempt at a patch job)

http://pic18.picturetrail.com/VOL940/3744123/13970720/208764565.jpg

I've got all of the patch panels (both cab corners, both rocker panels, inner rocker panel, and front and rear cab floor supports), along with cab mount kit, matching locks/ignition (yes I kept the originals), and a few other misc. parts. Also included with the truck was an extra set of brake/reverse lenses, the original manual, and an original complete V8 dash w/ all of the gauges and wiring harness.

I have some of the plans (mostly in my head) on what i'm going to do.

I do have a couple questions, along with a small update.

First- If i'm going to do a frame-off restoration, would you recommend bracing the cab when I take it off? Will the cab flex much?

Second- Does anyone know a good boneyard in southcentral PA with any LWB steel or wooden floor beds? :hm:

Anyway, today I had a couple hours to "mess around" and I decided to start on something simple- so I started with a fender well... the guy that had it before me was going to use the bed only, and he mashed it all to heck trying to straighten them, so i've started on them... its slow progress, but I want to do it right the first time... BTW-I dont have much experience with a hammer and dolly, i've only straightened the body on our race cars a couple of times... Below the orange line is where I have already straightened.

AFTER some work *It isint even halfway done yet... gimme some time to figure this stuff out!

I am very open to suggestions and places to look for parts... If you are in the PA/MD/NJ area and know of places to look for stuff.

By the way-i'm 16 right now and most of the work will be done myself with alot of help from my dad. :metal: I still think my dad is nuts for offering to help with my project, because like i said, i'm building it for my senior project which is due spring 08'.

Not much to update on, other than its getting COLDER here and not much work will get done for at least a week (Brothers RX-7 has developed a "small" knock... he didnt find it too funny when my dad said to just turn the radio up and the knock will go away...) So I guess its time to get rotarted and fix that thing!

Oh and I am also being side-tracked with motocross... training every day plus trips to North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, etc take lots of time out of my schedule:but:

I'm getting a little worried my project wont be anywhere near completion by this time next year for my senior project... Hopefully I can get lots more time to work on it during the summer since I wont be doing much other than motocross, family, and girlfriend type things.

FINALLY--an update!

Since my last post, we picked up the 69 which is in pretty bad shape (as far as body and such). alot of the truck was SKETCHY-1/2 tightened bolts, missing bolts on the engine mounts, etc etc. But the motor is pulled out of it right now, so thats good!

I also got to work on the 67' today, it was just me working alone and I think I got a good bit done in 3 1/2 hours of work... I know most of the stuff at 16 but i cant wait to learn more. Only thing I got stuck on was when two of the nuts that are welded onto the grill that run along the bottom came loose. Luckily my arms are thin enough I could reach inside the grill and hold a 1/2 inch wrench and hold the nut and get the bolt off. WHAT A PAIN!

Sadly, I also noticed a bunch of rust on my right fender along the very bottom while I was messing around underneath, but there wasnt as much rust as I was thinking would be on a truck of its age.

I will upload pics soon, when my computer isint taking a dump on me!:hh:

Yesterday's progress ^

Anyways, I got to work on it today, I worked from 4:30 till 7:30 by myself and AHHH I need to find a better way to remove the bolts on the inner fenderwell without breaking the nuts on the inside loose. I didnt run into many problems with breaking the nuts loose until I went to the bumper and fender bolts, which has kinda been nice.

racerman85
06-28-2007, 01:55 PM
alright well not much got done today... I cant pick the hood up off my truck by myself (hood is already unbolted, it is just laying in its place. I'm not either tall enough or enough leverage haha. I did get a parts inventory of everything I have, though so I know what I need.

And yes! I made it to lorettas! I'm so stoked-its still pretty surreal. I went 17-CONSI-1-3-2 for 7th overall (last qualifying spot). I talked to alot of people and no one has ever heard of anyone making it out of the regional qualifier after going through the CONSI. consistancy prevailed, and I made it. I had to go to Georgia to qualify, which is considered the hardest region to make it in... I dont think a kid from PA would be able to hang with the south, but I know I left alot of people scratching their heads!

A pretty cool thing I found in my 67' today was this...

Hey guys... First off these *&^$ spindles are impossible to get off! I have the entire front end torn apart waiting to get my disc brake setup that I ordered from GMCpauls ($1024 with new front coils and everything else needed) but I am having a horrible time getting the spindles off.

I also bought a hand held sand blaster and a box/25lb bag of glass beads to sandblast the front end of the truck. i'm sure I will need more, but it was $55 for both from harbor freight.

Get yourself a pickle fork from the parts store. You might tear the ball joint boots but you probably want to replace them anyway:

Tried that... didnt help much... my dad ended up using that for the top ball joint and we used a big hammer and hit the bottom ball joint and I stood on it with a big peice of steel to try to pry it apart. it worked!

We were planning on pulling the cab off the frame today to take it to get sand blasted but i crashed pretty hard today (motocross). I was winning the race and I crashed on a long straightaway and hit a tree back/head first. Luckily I had my neckbrace on (made of carbon fiber and something else). My neck snapped so hard back that I broke the carbon fiber. Needless to say im a little sore, but feeling very lucky I had my neckbrace on and im still thanking god for keeping me safe. Less than 2 years ago one of my close friends was in a crash almost exactly like mine where he hit a tree; sadly for him he didnt have a neck brace on and is paralyzed from the armpits down. I'm still feelin lucky. Sore, but lucky haha.

Anyways, on a lighter note, The sandblasting idea we had for the frame (doing it in house) isint going to work the way we expected. We are going to take it somewhere so I can sandblast it there/get it sandblasted there. I wanted to do it myself, but the cost of media is pretty high and we dont have the facility to sand blast in...

Hey guys-time for an update!

Started with this, about a week ago...

Partially torn down (arms before sandblasting)

http://pic30.picturetrail.com/VOL1493/9400929/17692238/275739368.jpg

It was a little past 10 when i finally got all the arms blasted and painted... Here was my setup to collect my glass beads

http://pic30.picturetrail.com/VOL1493/9400929/17692238/275739379.jpg

I ended up using my ranger as a "post" and stuck light in one of the pockets. It was the perfect size to hold two halogen lights-perfect! I'm pretty happy with the turn-out of the arms, now its just time for the frame :)

http://pic30.picturetrail.com/VOL1493/9400929/17692238/276678745.jpg

I've also decided to post a parts/price list of what i've got going on here...

Ball joints (2), front tie rod end (2), Front tie rod ends (2), Adjusting sleeve (2), Idler arm (1), Ball joint (2) total $151.28

2 cans of Rustoleum semi-gloss black spray paint between the frame and arms, 2 coats of paint. I'm very happy with how it came out, I spent 3 hours of sandblasting trying to get everything off. You can tell where the road salt laid, but on the top of the frame you can see where the press laid "scars". pretty neat IMO. Sadly, they dont make trucks like they used to :/

I figure since I have to do it in my report for my senior project, I figured i'd just add it here so when i come back later on and if I have already lost my reciepts I can just check here :)

Thanks guys. I'm hoping that when my steering parts come in tomorrow, i'll be able to get my front end put together and I can start on some body work. I dont know if i'll have the chance though because my brother and dad are racing cars tomorrow night and saturday night, so who knows!

I realized today that my biggest problem with doing this truck is I was "overwhelmed" until I actually started tearing it down and getting my hands dirty. It really is not as bad as I thought it would be (so far).

I wish I could've snapped a pic, but I sat at an intersection today talking to a pretty hot chick, around my age. Nothing special about that, accept she was driving a 68' LWB big window with a 396 in it, 3 on the tree and everything. She knew exactly what was in it and knew how to drive it :) There was some good inspiration there... She said when I get mine done we can go out for a cruise. Also, a few miles down the road (if anyone lives near York) There is a 1971-1972 LWB for sale, sb400 400r4. asking somewhere around 16k i THINK. I had to stop and look... Makes me wanna drive mine! I havent seen any C10's in a while, and today I saw 3! I couldnt believe it.

The cab should not need bracing depending on the extent of the rust perforation. If the rockers and floor panels are shot, you may want to brace it otherwize don't bother. Cheers!

I have a young friend here in Oregon (about your age) who owns a '65 C-20 long bed (that runs) and he refuses to do anything with it. He wants to sell it for a Chevy Luv pickup. YUCK!!! PUKE!!! He wants 500 bucks for the truck and if I didn't have so many projects myself, I would buy it. What an idiot. New cars (or a stupid Chevy Luv for that matter, no offience to those who own one) will NEVER have the class or style of the old classics. (with a few, RARE exceptions) Congrats on your truck, keep up the work, you will be so glad of the effort in the end. Besides, you can buy a new truck, but honestly??? will it look and turn heads like the one you are building? Also, there is nothing you are doing that can't be either... redone, reproduced or made better later. Don't worry about the details, you will learn more as you go. If you find that you could have done something different or better than change it. Thats the beauty of this... in 10 years, you can tear it down and redo it again. God knows how many cars of mine that I have redone. Keep it up!

Don

PS I know it may be alot in saying, but dump the spray cans and invest in a cheap compressor and a cheap spray gun. You will be MUCH happier in the end (the cheapest spray gun paint [catalized automotive grade] is 1000 X's better than the best-your-money-can-buy spray can paint), besides you can learn how to paint that way too. (hopfully paint your truck, heck, if I can do it, anyone can) Isn't there a Harbor Freight near where you live???

THANK YOU! I have been saying that all along and everyone keeps saying "why waste your time on a 40 year old truck when you can have a brand new one that is much nicer" (my parents pay for my vehicle of choice for my 2nd vehicle). Its not that I dont like anything new out there, its I like my nice, slow, low old truck that virtually no one else drives!!!:metal:

I wanted to do the same thing! I have a really nice compressor and a cheap harbor freight paint gun, but my dad said that it didnt matter. Trust me, I fought to see if I could get him to budge, but I would kinda rather the money is spent elsewhere on the truck. But thanks, and I fully agree with you-when I redo the truck later, it will be done with a paint gun-believe me!

Doesn't matter huh? Hmmm... if that were true, then why don't all the body shops around the world use rattle can spray paint for thier cars?

Keep working on your dad, I am sure he will see the value of doing it right, even if it takes a little longer or costs a little more.

"why waste your time on a 40 year old truck when you can have a brand new one that is much nicer"

Nicer eh? If a new Chevy or Ford drives by you, you might take a quick glance and say "eh, nice truck", BUT a person cruzes by with a fixed up old classic truck, people stop, stare and say "OMG, look at that, hey so-in-so check it out!"

People stop in the parking lots to look at your classic. They never pay attention to the mass-produced blah people are driving. Wait till you are done and watch what they say.

Do what makes YOU happy, your friends don't have to drive it, and when you are done, watch how many of your friends want to take YOUR truck when they go places.

"nicer" in most kids eyes is brand new. Or maybe a civic (what a joke!) IMO the older the better, I dont plan on letting any friends drive it haha. It will pretty much be me driving it, and occasionally my dad.

I know it does matter, but for time and money (plus i've already painted 1/2 the frame) it just wont work out for now. I want to strip it and paint it correctly next time i rebuild it, but this will work for now I guess. I fully agree with you, though!

DOH! I cased a jump racing motocross on the 15th (2 days after my 17th birthday!) and I broke the middle of my foot (the bone that is behind your big toe that connects your big toe to your ankle). I havent gotten much work done until today, and I pretty much went through my steering parts (I didnt get the chance to check it all out yet) and found they didnt give me my upper ball joints(?).

Other than that, I got the seat pulled out and the cab is unbolted, but still on the frame. Also, I got the doors off... My dad helped me out today because of obvious reasons (cant carry anything pretty much). Another good thing today is that it was my first day walking around without crutches because they are getting annoying!

I dont have any pictures of my progress today because it is starting to rain. Its nice to be walking, at least!

QOUTE - I have been racing motocross for 12 years, and it is pretty much the center of my life (for the most part).

you know that is true as we grow up all we do is eat sleep and ride motorcycle's , but you know at 38 now I would rather walk than ride a bike , just got sick of e'm ,,,,,,,,,,,,,

Powerglide, I'd bet... Your transmission.

Nice work on your truck man, my dad and I painted mine for my senior project 8 years ago and I've barely touched it since! Make sure to thank your folks everyday for their "funding." Once you man one of these guys on your own it's a whole different story. Looks like you're in good hands.

Hey guys, here is what got done yesterday...

Both right side cab mounts welded in, along with home made patch panels front and back. Took all day (Thanks dad, I am not very confident yet in my welding, to be honest)

I didnt get a ton done, accept for helping my dad and I scraped most of the crud off the bottom of the body. A bunch of friends and I took on head role of the cheering on our schools girls field hockey team, and they had a game and we still had to make signs... Hey, your only a senior in high school so we figured we'd do something no one else does and cheer on a "forgotten sport" at our school... anyways, less babble and more pics... Enjoy *remember this is yesterday's stuff*

And today, here is the update from today... Home made patch panels were made for the floor, but not welded in yet. Trimmed and everything, they just need welded... While my dad was tinkering with that, I got the front end together! I'm getting excited now! :) Before I toss up the pics, I just wanted to say there was a clearence issue with the Pauls Disc Brake Kit-The top of the spindle rubs against the arm, but with a little convincing it doesnt catch now... Not much of a big deal, but I figured i'd mention it... BTW they are 2" drop spindles.

Last year they said we had until december sometime, but they changed dates on me... ahh!!!

Gas tank neck grommet-$5
Radiator support mounting kit (bolts and all)-$25

window rubber-$45/both

Total-$81 (no tax)

And came home and ordered this from LMC Trucks:

Front Cab Floor-RH-$28.95
Front Cab Floor-LH-$28.95
Color Bond off white interior paint-$12.95 ea (bought 4)
Front cab mount hex bolts-$7.95
Front cab mount hex nuts-$.95 ea (bought 2)
Color Bond Clear coat-$12.95 ea (bought 2)

Total-$167.70 (with shipping)

And I forgot to order my rear cab floors! DOH!

Rear Cab Floor Outer-RH-$22.95
Rear Cab Floor Outer-LH-$22.95

Total-$56.15 (w/ shipping)

total running cost for the entire project (including cost of both trucks and MOST parts)-$4417.75

The total is including parts that the PO bought (patch panels, headers, intake, etc etc). I do have MOST of the parts I need to finish the project (paint, interior, and some other misc stuff I still need to get).

but yeah...i haven't driven it extensive amounts. just home from where the gy's house where it was bought, up and down the road a few times, and around in the field. haha.

i'm *hoping*...HOPING...to be in the high teens. i'd be thrilled with 17. esque.

especially with the low gears, and if i get keep my foot out of it...i can hope. but thats a BIG if. ya know what i mean. lol.

so, sorry to disappoint. nothing of the sort yet. lol. i'm hoping to get some paint layed on this weekend, or early next week if i can get time, bolt it back together, and enjoy.

Just wanted to leave another update... I got the firewall sanded and painted today...

Schedule for this week (hopefully):

Monday-buy a complete clutch, mount brake lines, MC, etc. also, bolt up engine mounts-HOPEFULLY BOLT UP ENGINE :)

Tuesday-hang fenders (temporary) and possibly pick up my wheels (20" american racing wheels, but I forget the tire size) to see if they rub at all

Rest of the week-who knows?

I cant wait to get the engine and everything bolted up. I'm hoping to hear it start and MAYBE move by friday (depending on if my power steering setup arrives before then... if not I might have to tinker with the manual steering...)

Thanks for the compliments guys... I am very lucky to have my parents backing on my project, and im lucky that I chose to build this truck because my dad loves old trucks, too.

Thebrown83- Thanks for the compliments. I wish there was something i could do to help you with your build but i'm a little too far. Good luck when you start-I have been dreaming about building an old truck since I was 12 when my dads friend had one and i'm finally getting to build one now. Your day will come soon, i'm sure.

Berencamp- Wow I know! I cant believe the amount of stuff crammed everywhere!

toomanytoyz- Thanks alot. I cant believe how much time/effort I have put into this truck, and I know its going to be well worth it by the time im finished.

I keep running into hiccups tonight-I got my cab mostly bolted down, but I am missing one front bolt. I went to put the tranny in and my speedometer gears are broken out of the tranny. I got the steering column sanded and sprayed, along with my bellhousing. I am also stuck because I dont have V8 engine towers, so I dont know what to do now! I'm kinda frustrated I didnt have all this stuff sorted out before, but live and learn I guess...
