Thought i would do this for fun and maybe someone can learn from this. (isn't that what this board is about?). Anyhow, i believe the 67-68 style actually started around 1960. The 73 style i do not know how long they used that style for. If anyone wants to add part numbers or comments, please do. MODS: feel free to move this if needed. Thanks, Eric

Good pics/info. Where did you get all those hooks? I can't find them around here. I don't think they were sent to WA...LOL

nice collection but i have one slight correction---in the G.M. parts book, the 67-68 hooks are listed as fitting 60-68. i have found them on a 65 one ton at pick-n-pull. i can't say they were original or not but they had been there a long time. just thought i'd throw this in for you junkyard dogs, like me, so you can start checking out the earlier G.M. trucks.

pickmup, Many years of looking and some help from other board members.
Jerry, i wrote that they started around 1960, but don't know for sure. Also on the 67-68 style i have seen them with a 6 digit part number and a 7 digit. I assume the 6 digit would be the early 60's? What does your book show? I have also heard that the 72 extreme bend hooks carry the same part # as the 69-72 style...

my book is in storage right now, it's the 47-72 green parts book. i don't remember the numbers but the 60-68 fact has stuck in my little pea brain,LOL. I had never really paid attention to the earlier trucks until I read the numbers then on my next trip to pick-n-pull i found a set on the one ton two wheel drive.

Dean, on your 87 do they hang down like the earlier ones?
Americanrider, looks like the same hook, but aren't the mounting holes different?
I know they had at least 2 other styles for the 73 and up, which i don't have.

Here is my set, still in the hands of the PO. His dad was the only owner of the truck, removed them shortly after he bought it and put a monster steel push bumper on. After reading my glove box sticker I noticed that it was an option. Called up the PO and he searched his dads shop, found them and cleaned them up. He is starting a powder coating business and says he is going to ship them to me to put back on his dads truck. I have been waiting for awhile though...(fingers crossed!) They are off of a 68 SWB K-10...

I have seen more pictures of these not installed, than installed. Anyone installation pics to add to the thread? (not trying to steal it away, just add to it)

As far as I know the 87-9 ?? where all mounted horizontally and stuck out through the plastic air damms. I removed the air damm because you could not fit a chain around the hook.

I would like to bring up the subject of Industrial or Utility tow hooks for the 67-72 trucks. I found a set at a swap meet for $10. (bottom pic is my hooks) When I got them I thought they might be rear hooks but I have found 2 other trucks that show them mounted on the front. I have seen pics if other Rear hooks and the have 3 mounting holes.

The white 69 bus is a Craigslist ad I found and the 4x4 utility was a members truck that sold here on the board a few months back. As a note the seller showed the glove box sheet and tow hooks where not listed?
Any comments? Here is the sale thread:

Did you guys know that the only way that the factory installed tow hooks was on trucks with painted bumpers, so no CST trucks left the factory with hooks.
For CST and other trucks with chrome bumpers if you wanted tow hooks you had to have them Dealer installed or buy them over the counter and do it yourself.

It is my understanding that the hooks in the lower right corner of the picture listed as 73 - ? are the '73 thru '80 style GM hooks. I'm thinking in '81 GM changed to a differant style that mounts to the frame with the hook being at a horizontal position with the hooks facing each other and openings in an air dam to attach tow strap. Used from '81 thru '87 when trucks changed front clip, used also on the Suburbans up thru '91. Guess I need to pull mine off my '91 Burb and get a pic loaded in the computer.

Heres a little more info for ya, the tow hook option in 1971 cost 19.00, not bad compared to the cost a AM/FM radio the same year 148.55.

The 60 to 68 hooks mounted kinda sideways as they do on todays trucks.
These are the factory hooks on my cousins 63 4x4

How in the heck are those mounted in that position? Must be something coming off the frame that they are bolted to, my frame can mount them like that:confused: any more mounting pics would be great...:drama:

BLAZERMAN
12-02-2006, 07:12 PM
Sorry, what I meant to say is they mount that way on the 60 to 66 trucks and not the 67-68. If I rememmber there is a large heavy angled brace that attaches to the frame and is also a support for the bumper. Next time I go over there I'll take some more pics.

Rob,
your picture of the hooks on the 63 shows me that the ones i got at pick-n-pull were not factory. the ones i pulled were mounted flat on the frame like our years.

PICKMUP
12-02-2006, 08:57 PM
Look what I found today on an old nasty 72 GMC 3\4T truck sitting in a yard next to hwy167 south of Seattle...I just bid $350 for the last set on Ebay and did NOT get them! I did get these for considerably less. ;) I had to root around in the dirt to get these off, but finally got my hands on a pair.:)
I don't know what the fascination is with these tow hooks, either, but I wanted in on it. You always want what you can't have, I guess. I actually like the looks of the 69-72 hooks better, because they are better balanced. These look like they just stuck two left handers on both sides.
They were listed on the glovebox, but I didn't get the number. I didn't want the owner to think he had something special and jack up the price. I noticed and took pics of the mounting holes...one side is mounted higher than the other, probably because one hook points in toward the frame rail and the other away from it. Part of that, "two lefts make a right" thing, I suppose.

Nice score pickmup!
Rob, i do have 3 4x4s listed in my sig. (the 70 blazer also) I am set to put 2 sets of hooks on each 4x4 now. HAHA. I used to have a set of the "bendy" mid 80s hooks like your pic, but i couldn't handle the prestige and had to let them go... Actually, i heard those were bent like that on trucks equipped with the front air dam to clear it. A little more info to share...

The way I see it:

The great tow hook price war was a run on buying tow hooks buy an e-bayer named upnorthgmparts out of Brainerd, Minnesota. He bid high on almost every set of hooks that came up for auction and won almost every time because he was out-spending what most people would consider a resonable price.

He still bids on almost every decent tach dash and especially air/vac/speedwarning dashes. He also sells 67-72 parts on e-bay. Because board members where seeing these 3-4 hundred dollar selling prices on hooks it inflated the prices here on our board.

Consider that about 2 years ago when I joined this board $50-75 was the going board price for a decent van tilt. Now they sell for $100-150 and up on e-bay just because more e-bayers got into bidding wars. Now the average price for good van tilts has jumped here too.

Do you see the compairison? Does anyone up in Minn. know this guy upnorthgmparts, is he a board member? Please understand I'm not slamming on him for what he did and still does. Buying and selling is part timeing, luck and money. Personally I would not pay that for hooks even of they where gold-plated, but to each his own.

Frank, I see them also, nice score!

americanrider. upnorthgmparts is a board member. I know him pretty well. Funny part is, i only know of 3 sets of tow hooks that he has owned. The set of 69-72s i just recently got from him and they came off a truck he parted. And yes, he loves his tach dashes...
I can't believe what hooks bring either, but like pickmup, i have bid on them to a fairly high price and not even come close to winning.

Since I paid 10 bucks and no tax for a pair I think it was a good deal. They will keep your chain/tow rope up and out of the mud. With that curl they look like the belong on our trucks.

Alot of interesting info! I like the 68-72 style the best. More balanced look IMO.
I'm wondering how many frames have been tweeked over the years by using tow hooks.
