I finished up a backyard paint job this past summer using some really cheap paint. ($75 for the kit: 1 gal. of paint, 1qt. hardener, 1qt. reducer) the paint turned out ok, but I botched up the prep work on the cab. I used 60 grit on the doors and fenders and didn't take it all the way down to metal. This was my first attempt at body work, and I really didn't know what I was doing. Anyways, I was thinking about taking the doors and fenders off to have them actually sandblasted, sanding down the rest of the body and painting it a different color. Am i crazy???

No your not crazy. Body prep means the differance between a smooth job and sh!t job like the one on my '68 4X4. The previous owner had the work done. The paint was laid on real nice and looks great from a distance but when you get up close you can see every sanding mark and spots where they didn't use spot putty. Take your time and prep the body right. You will love the finished product that much more. Just my .02 cents worth. :)

that's exactly what's going on with mine!! Plus, I don't even know if I like the color anymore. I painted it torch red (really original, huh?) and I'm thinkin of going with a rat rod look. thanks for the input

to have your doors sandblasted you'll need to take all the guts and glass out

you don't want to use regular sand blasting sand, it will warp you doors, and any other panel you try to blast. you will want to bead blast it, or soda blast it. both are a much finer grit and it will take longer to do, but it wont warp your panels.

Glass bead blasting will warp the panels as well ... the "beads" are ground up windshields (no joke) ... find someone in your area that does soda blasting.

I use the coal slag for blasting which does a great job and does not leave "grit" like sand as bad.Soda works as well but you better get it ALL out and the metal clean as well or it will haunt you later.Soda is a form of SALT you know.:(
I blasted the "inside" of the doors and used stripper/DA on the outside.
Blasting the outside is tricky on these models as the skin is thin compaired to the shell so I really don't even try using a blaster on them because you can easily warp the shemp out of them no matter what media you use if your not experienced at it.
